varied characters in this exciting action sequel.

OUR KIND OF TRAITOR (15)
Sat 2nd & Sun 3rd 8pm
DIRECTOR Susanna White
CAST Ewan McGregor, Naomie Harris, Damian Lewis, Stellan Skarsgård
SCREEN TEST Fans of The Night Manager can enjoy another le Carré espionage thriller
fix. An ordinary English couple, on holiday in Marrakech, meet a charismatic Russian and
agree to take a computer memory stick back to MI6. They find themselves swept into a
dangerous adventure involving spies, criminals and dirty politics. With a strong cast and
exotic locations, this is a taut and engrossing spy drama from writer Hossein Amini
(Drive, The Two Faces of January) and director White (Bleak House, Parade’s End).
(2016 UK 108 mins)
ZOOTROPOLIS (PG)
Sun 3rd 3pm
DIRECTORS Byron Howard, Rich Moore
VOICES Ginnifer Goodwin, Idris Elba, JK Simmons, Octavia Spencer
SCREEN TEST Another chance to see this delightful animation. Rookie cop bunny Judy
Hopps, determined to prove herself in the police force, teams up with a wily fox to solve a
missing otter case. Set in an intelligent and fascinatingly detailed animal-run world and filled
with joyous energy and adult allusions, this is a treat for all ages.

MUSTANG (15)
Mon 4th 8pm
DIRECTOR Deniz Gamze Ergüven
CAST Günes Sensoy, Doga Zeynep Doguslu, Tugba Sunguroglu, Elit Iscan
SCREEN TEST This extraordinary Oscar-nominated feature from Turkish director Ergüven
tells the story of five free-spirited teenage sisters punished after daring to play with a group
of boys at the beach. Forced by their conservative grandmother and uncles to leave school,
dress modestly and prepare for marriage, the girls struggle with the huge change to their
lives and cope in different ways. Full of playfully rebellious spirit, this is a rousing, thoughtful
and poignant tale of sisterhood.

VERSUS
Fri 8th & Sat 9th 8pm
DIRECTORS Glenn Ficarra, John Requa
CAST Tina Fey, Margot Robbie, Martin Freeman, Alfred Molina
SCREEN TEST Fey stars as US TV correspondent Kim Barker who in 2002 volunteered
to cover the war in Afghanistan for her network. Completely inexperienced and unprepared,
she was dropped into the middle of a war zone and yet quickly grew to love the adrenalinepaced work. Based on the real Barker’s memoirs, this is an enjoyable blend of comedy and
drama with Fey comfortably demonstrating her comic timing while deftly handling the more
serious stuff.
(2016 USA 112 mins)
ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS (PG)
Sat 9th, Sun 10th, Sat 23rd & Sun 24th 3pm
DIRECTOR James Bobin
CAST Mia Wasikowska, Helen Bonham Carter, Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway
SCREEN TEST Alice (Wasikowska) returns to the whimsical world of Underland only to
discover the Mad Hatter (Depp) unwell and in need of her help. With the aid of old and
new friends, Alice must travel through time to save him and the world she loves from the
evil clutches of the Red Queen (Bonham Carter) and a clock-like creature known as Time.
Colourful and chaotic, with an all-star cast.
(2016 USA 113 mins)
EVERYBODY WANTS SOME!! (15)
Sun 10th 8pm
DIRECTOR Richard Linklater
CAST Blake Jenner, Juston Street, Ryan Guzman, Tyler Hoechlin
SCREEN TEST The new film from US indie master Linklater (Boyhood) is a nostalgic step
back to early 1980s college life. A ‘spiritual sequel’ to his slacker hit Dazed and Confused,
the film focuses on a group of rowdy young jocks as they enjoy a weekend of parties,
chasing girls and competitive bravado. Linklater expertly captures the moment with the
fashion and music of the time, taking us on a journey through rock, punk, country and, of
course, disco.
(2016 USA 117 mins)
VERSUS: THE LIFE AND FILMS OF KEN LOACH (12A)
Mon 11th 8pm
DIRECTOR Louise Osmond
SCREEN TEST A candid account of the life and career of one of Britain’s most
controversial and successful filmmakers as he celebrates his 80th birthday. Osmond
(Deep Water, Dark Horse) follows Loach as he films I, Daniel Blake, his attack on the
welfare state which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes, and looks back at the trials and
tribulations of his 50 year career, from his roots in television to his award-winning features.
Funny and provocative.

Fri 15th, Sat 16th & Sun 17th 8pm
DIRECTOR Thea Sharrock
CAST Emilia Clarke, Sam Claflin, Jenna Coleman, Janet McTeer
SCREEN TEST Jojo Moyes’ adaptation of her critically-acclaimed bestselling novel stars
Clarke (Game of Thrones) as a quirky 26-year-old stuck in a dead-end job. Her normally
cheery outlook is challenged when she becomes carer to a wheelchair-bound wealthy
young banker (Claflin, The Hunger Games). Both get more than they bargained for and
find their lives changing in ways neither could have imagined. Directed by lauded theatre
director Sharrock (The Hollow Crown), this is a thought-provoking romantic drama about
love across the social divide and tough choices that have to be faced.(2016 USA 110 mins)
friday’s screening followed by a Q&A with author & scriptwriter Jojo Moyes.
LOVE & FRIENDSHIP (U)
Fri 22nd & Sat 23rd 8pm
DIRECTOR Whit Stillman
CAST Kate Beckinsale, Chloë Sevigny, Morfydd Clark, Xavier Samuel
SCREEN TEST Set in the opulent drawing rooms of 18th-century English society,
Stillman’s deliciously sharp adaptation of the Jane Austen novella Lady Susan focuses on
beautiful young widow Lady Susan Vernon (Beckinsale). While staying at her in-laws’
estate to wait out colourful rumours of her dalliances, she fills her time with matchmaking
for herself and her daughter. Stillman proves himself a natural fit for Austen in this
gloriously witty and acerbic film.

Saturday’s screening followed by a Q&A with olivier Stockman,
owner of Sands film Studio which made the costumes for the film.
WARCRAFT: THE BEGINNING (12A)

DIRECTOR Duncan Jones
CAST Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton, Ben Foster, Dominic Cooper
SCREEN TEST A tribe of Orcs pass through a magic portal into the land of Azeroth,
looking to claim it as their new home. But one Orc rebels against his power-hungry leader
and tries to establish a truce with Azeroth’s king. An epic cinematic fantasy adventure,
lovingly created from the video game by long term fan (and director of Moon) Jones.
(2016 USA 123 mins)
DUMBO (U)
Sun 17th 11am

soar to fame and freedom, never fails to delight. Enjoy the cinema without worrying about
noise or wriggling.

EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT (El abrazo de la serpiente) (12A)
Mon 18th 8pm
DIRECTOR Ciro Guerra
CAST Nilbio Torres, Jan Bijvoet, Antonio Bolivar, Brionne Davis
SCREEN TEST Shot in glorious widescreen black and white, this Oscar-nominated film
presents a breathtaking journey through the Colombian Amazon following the interwoven
stories of two European explorers, one in the early 1900s, the other 40 years later.
Karamakate, the last surviving member of his tribe, leads both travellers in search of a rare
and exotic plant with healing properties. Eschewing the hackneyed narrative of white saviour
and noble ‘savage’, Guerra instead reverses the focus, filtering the Europeans’ journeys
through Karamakate’s native perspective. A truly poetic cinematic experience.

Thurs 21st 6.50pm
Play from the Almeida Theatre – see Special Events pages for details.
Sun 24th 8pm
DIRECTOR Lily Keber
SCREEN TEST This vibrant documentary explores the life, times and music of James
Booker, the legendary New Orleans jazz pianist described by Dr John as “the best black,
gay, one-eyed, junkie piano genius New Orleans has ever produced”. Booker, who died
prematurely in 1983, was a classic case of an overlooked genius whose musical brilliance
and showmanship were counterbalanced by personal adversity, prejudice, addiction and
some dodgy career choices. It’s an extraordinary story, underpinned by a wealth of hitherto
unseen performance footage.

Hailee Steinfeld, Kiernan Shipka, Geena Davis, John C Reilly (dubbed version)
SCREEN TEST A gorgeously animated fantasy from Studio Ghibli about a timid
adolescent girl, Anna, who is sent to the countryside to recuperate from an illness. While
exploring, she discovers a mysterious mansion and befriends the girl who lives there,
Marnie – who may or may not be a ghost. A delightful story for anyone who has ever felt a
bit different from those around them.

DIRECTOR Andrés Couturier
VOICES Jason Harris, Chris Edgerly, Bill Lobley, Darin De Paul
SCREEN TEST Ever wondered how everyone’s favourite wise-cracking alley cat got his
gang together and why he has a running feud with Officer Dibble? This prequel animation
explains how the resourceful TC first met the good-natured if dim-witted Benny on the New
York backstreets, and how the feline partners in crime get into big trouble when they try to
outwit a notorious diamond thief. A colourful, funny and warm-hearted family animation.

DIRECTOR Jodie Foster
CAST George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Jack O’Connell, Dominic West
SCREEN TEST Clooney, on fine form, plays cocky TV financial advisor Lee Gates, taken
hostage on-air by a gun-toting truck driver (O’Connell) who fell into financial ruin after
following one of Gates’ tips. Producer Patty Fenn (Roberts) keeps the cameras rolling as her
team race to find answers for the disgruntled man. Foster’s hugely watchable comedy-thriller
acts as wish-fulfilment for the 99% – a chance to see the one-percenters held to account.

DIRECTOR Simon Stone
CAST Sam Neill, Geoffrey Rush, Odessa Young, Miranda Otto
SCREEN TEST Ibsen’s The Wild Duck is relocated to contemporary rural Australia in
theatre director Stone’s film, but it retains the original play’s powerful bite and atmosphere
of simmering tensions. A man returns home to attend his father’s second wedding, spending
time with his old school friend, but then he discovers a long-buried family secret. The
impressive cast deliver excellent performances and the cinematography perfectly captures the
isolation and beauty of the brooding landscape. A fiercely confident big screen debut from a
director to watch.

TRUMAN (15)
Mon 1st 8pm
DIRECTOR Cesc Gay
CAST Ricardo Darin, Javier Cámara, Dolores Fonzi, Eduard Fernández
SCREEN TEST Tomás visits Madrid to spend time with his old friend Julián (and his
pet dog Truman) as Julián enters the final stages of cancer. Over four days the friends look
back on their lives – their loves, successes and failures – and speculate on what the future
holds. This intimate buddy movie gives two of the Spanish-speaking world’s finest actors
deservedly meaty roles. A bittersweet comedy about the ups and downs of life and coming to
terms with its limitations.
(2015 Sp/Arg 106 mins Subtitled)
THE NICE GUYS (15)
Fri 5th & Sat 6th 8pm
DIRECTOR Shane Black
CAST Russell Crowe, Ryan Gosling, Angourie Rice, Margaret Qualley
SCREEN TEST Crowe and Gosling share an irresistible laugh-out-loud chemistry in this
explosive action comedy set in 1970s Los Angeles. Gosling plays a down-on-his-luck private
eye who must work with Crowe’s hired enforcer to solve the case of a missing girl and the
seemingly unrelated death of a porn star. They uncover a shocking conspiracy that reaches
up to the highest circles of power. The well-crafted procedural combined with the two stars’
exceptional partnership results in a funny and entertaining hard-boiled noir comedy.

THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS (U)
Sat 6th, Sun 7th, Tues 9th & Thurs 11th 3pm
DIRECTORS Chris Renaud, Yarrow Cheney
VOICES Louis CK, Jenny Slate, Lake Bell, Kevin Hart
SCREEN TEST An animated comedy about the lives our pets lead after we leave for
work or school each day. Max, a pampered terrier living the high life with his owner Katie
in a swish Manhattan apartment, finds his life turned upside down when Katie brings
home rescue mongrel Duke. But the squabbling pair have to learn to get on when they find
themselves lost in New York. Glorious family fun.
(2016 USA 91 mins)
TALE OF TALES (15)
Sun 7th & Mon 8th 8pm
DIRECTOR Matteo Garrone
CAST Salma Hayek, Vincent Cassel, Toby Jones, Shirley Henderson
SCREEN TEST This darkly comic and inventive film is inspired by the celebrated fairy
tales of the 17th-century Neapolitan poet Giambattista Basile. In three very adult interlinked
fables one king must slay a sea monster, another nurtures a pet flea until it reaches gigantic
proportions and a lecherous prince gets a nasty surprise. A visually stunning celebration of
gothic fantasy which is by turns unnerving, hilarious, sensual and outrageous.

DIRECTOR Steven Spielberg
CAST Mark Rylance, Rebecca Hall, Bill Hader, Ruby Barnhill
SCREEN TEST This faithful adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic story is brought to the big
screen by Spielberg and his E.T. screenwriter Melissa Mathison. Rylance is perfect as the
benevolent giant who pours dreams into the ears of sleeping children, and whisks young
Sophie off to the land of giants to battle his child-chomping kin. Full of good-natured charm
and wonder.

DIRECTOR Isabel Coixet
CAST Patricia Clarkson, Ben Kingsley, Jake Weber, Sarita Choudhury
SCREEN TEST Wendy (Clarkson), a self-absorbed New York book critic, is shocked by the
sudden end of her marriage. Having always depended on her husband to drive, she must learn
to take the wheel on her own. Her driving instructor Darwan (Kingsley), an Indian immigrant
who works day and night to make ends meet, watches with alarm as his pupil falls apart at the
seams. This is a sweet depiction of how friendship and support can come from the unlikeliest of
places, and the two leads share a beguiling chemistry.

Sun 14th 8pm
DIRECTOR Michael Moore
SCREEN TEST For his latest critical look at the US, documentarian Michael Moore casts
his gaze outside: at France’s healthy school meals, Norway’s visionary prison system, the
female equality inscribed into Tunisian law. Moore playfully imagines instructing the military
to leave the ‘invading’ to him as he visits other countries to discover what America can learn
from them, while contrasting these scenes with a more sobering dissection of police brutality
and astronomical military funding back in America. Provocative and hilarious.

Mon 22nd 8pm

and powerful story of war and revenge. Determined to avenge his family’s death at the

his missions become increasingly dangerous. An incredible film that proved the launch
