Dear Parents and Juniors,
Can you believe that summer is almost here!? May is such an exciting time
not only for golf but for so many other things. I hope that everyone is able
to finish out their school year strong! Congratulations to all of our junior
members who are graduating!
This past week it was so exciting to see so many familiar names at the top
of the leaderboard for the state tournament. A huge congratulations to
Gateway Junior PGA Members Justin Wrozier and Jack Litzelfelner for becoming 2013 Class 2 and Class 3 state champions. Way to go!
I am very excited to get the heart of our season pumping. As many of
you know our program has been through a transition period for the past
couple years. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate everyone’s support,
understanding, and patience, as we try to structure our program to one
our junior golfers can grow with. Great things are on the way for this
summer.
One of the things that set our tournaments apart is the summer staff we
have at events. I am pleased to introduce the four interns for the summer
season: Jake Smock, Earl Gerlach, Victor Solla, and Kendra Shatto. Each
of these individuals brings a unique dynamic to our tournament program
and they are all very eager to get started. They have included a bio of
themselves in this month’s newsletter.
In this month’s newsletter, I have also included an important policies section. It covers how to withdraw from an event and a few other reminders.
These are not all of our policies but the ones that come up the most often.
All of our policies can be found in the Member Guide on the website.
If you have not attended your rules seminar, time is running out! Be sure
not to wait till the last minute. I cannot stress how much of a competitive
advantage you have by knowing the rules!
Good luck to everyone on their final exams and have a fun but safe end of
the school year.

Meet the Interns
Jake Smock
I'm Jake Smock and am 22 years old from Carmi, IL. I currently am a Junior
at Lindenwood University where I am a member of the men’s golf team. I
am looking forward to a bright future with this upcoming season at Lindenwood. I have one sibling, his name is Jon. Some goals for my future, after
graduation, consist of playing in as many Monday qualifying rounds as possible. This will allow me to make my dream of becoming pro a success, taking my PAT test and securing an assistant professional job. Ultimately I will
work my way up the system to become a very well-known teaching professional in the game.
Kendra Shatto
My name is Kendra Shatto and I am from St. Charles, MO. I go to school in
Springfield, MO at Missouri State University where I major in Entertainment
Management, focusing on Sports. I will graduate in December of this year. I
have a boxer mix dog named Bangle. My favorite accomplishment is that I
started the first annual 5K at my last internship with the Springfield Cardinals, the double-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. I love being outside,
working out, sports, food, and traveling.
Earl Gerlach
Hello, My name is Earl Gerlach and I am a student of the PGA Golf Management Program at the University of Colorado - Colorado Springs. I participated
in many junior golf tournaments during my adolescence as well as playing for
my high school team and for a short stint at Bradley University. After enrolling
in the PGM, I was afforded the opportunity to work under Ann Finke, the 2010
recipient of the PGA of America Junior Leader of the Year award. Her passion
for teaching young people coupled with my history as a junior player has
prompted me to offer my services to the Gateway Junior PGA. I am very excited about this opportunity and look forward to aiding the team any way
that I can.
Victor Solla
I am Victor Solla and I was Born in Spain. I am 25 years old. I came to the
US, thanks to a golf Scholarship at Lindenwood University, where I played
four years on the Lindenwood Golf Team. I have a 5 Handicap by R&A. At
Lindenwood I finished a degree in Business Admin with an emphasis in
Sport Management and MBA in Marketing. I have been addicted to the
game of golf since I was 10 years old and playing competitive tournaments since I was 15 years old. I love the respect and sportsmanship that
golf teaches. I like sharing my knowledge of the game with others and
having golf related conversations. I am really excited to be part of the
Gateway Junior PGA this year and I feel that it is a dream come true.

Eagle Springs Golf Course
May 5, 2013
Another great day for the Mini Novice 9 Junior Golfers at Eagle Springs! We dodged the rain, learned
about putting and etiquette from host PGA Professional, Tim Davenport, and played some golf. Due to
the wet ground, the PGA Sports Academy warm up/
practice session was cancelled, but will certainly return next event.
We look forward to seeing everyone at the next Mini
Novice 9 event at Crescent Farms on June 5th.

Putting Skin in the Game
At this time of year, golfers face a difficult, if not impossible, task in avoiding the sun. As golfers, we should
be aware of the potential risk and do everything we can to avoid future damage to our skin. Therefore, sun
protection products are a critical line of defense. May is Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month, a
good time to review some facts.
Skin cancer may not be everyone’s favorite topic, but here’s why even young golfers need to pay attention:
It is the most common cancer in the world—more than 2 million cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed this
year, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. And according to the Skin Cancer Foundation
website (www.skincancer.org), the risk for developing melanoma later in life doubles for individuals who
have had more than five sunburns at any age, and one or more major sunburns in childhood or adolescence.
Golfers: take the extra few minutes before each round to apply sunscreen and reapply when needed. Really, the solution is that simple. The good news is today’s products are non-greasy gels and sprays that won’t
run, making them more golfer-friendly.
The following specific “sun safety tips” from the American Academy of Dermatology will further help to prevent damage to your skin:









Slather on sunscreen - put on sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before going outside.
Look for sunscreen that has a high sun protection factor (SPF). Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen that
protects against UVA and UVB rays, and has a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 or greater, even on
cloudy days.
Reapply sunscreen every two hours or after you swim or sweat. Find one that states it’s water resistant
for 40 to 80 minutes.
Wear protective clothing. Long-sleeve shirts and pants can help avoid the sun.
Wear a wide broad-brimmed hat and sunglasses with UV protective lenses.
Stay in the shade whenever possible.
Be careful around water, sand and reflective surfaces.
Get your vitamin D from food, rather than sun.
Stay away from tanning beds. Tanning beds have harmful
rays and may make your skin look older and can cause skin
cancer.
Since May is Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month, it is
a reminder to us to pay attention and protect our skin whenever
possible. In the meantime, get out, play golf and enjoy time in
the sun – but only after you apply the sunscreen!

Clarence Voigt Memorial Scholarship Fund
In 2011, the family
and friends of Clarence Voigt had a
reason to grow the
foundation scholarship fund. The Gateway PGA Foundation had a reason to
rename our scholarship. Former Head
PGA Professional,
Clarence Voigt, lost
his battle with
ALS. Mr. Voigt's
time spent at St.
Clair Country Club
will always be remembered and his love for Junior Golf will live on through the Clarence
Voigt Memorial Scholarship Fund. The scholarships will be awarded to those high school individuals who meet certain criteria to be considered for this great college financial award. The
Gateway PGA Foundation will look to those students who have shown a commitment to the
classroom, the game of golf, and carry their own
lives in a fashion similar to Clarence Voigt. We
are honored by the generosity shown in Clarence's name and look forward to the lives that
will be impacted.
Mr. Voigt began his career in golf at the age of 9,
caddying at Westborough Country Club and later at Westwood Country Club. After service in
the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during World
War II, he started his 45-year career at St. Clair
Country Club, working with Clarke Morse, Head
Pro. Upon Morse's retirement, Clarence became
Head Pro in 1975, and later served as Director of
Golf until his retirement in 1990. Mr.
Voigt especially loved working with Junior Golfers. Clarence Voigt lives on through the Clarence Voigt Memorial Scholarship. Established in
2011, this scholarship looks to help junior golfers
of the Gateway PGA with their cost of a college
education.
