ast week, our two NAFIS interns, Bernadette Brandt and Bryce Freeman,
presented their research to a meeting of the Organizations Concerned about
Rural Education (OCRE).
Brant started off the presentation with her research on teacher training programs
executed on Native American reservations. The results demonstrated the need for
greater numbers of “home-grown teachers,” meaning teachers who grew up and
lived in the same community they will go on to teach in.
Brant’s presentation included some of the ideas schools have used to address
the difficulties in recruiting and retaining high-quality, experienced teachers in rural
and reservation environments. Through researching previously successful promising
practices, Brant concluded that home-grown programs were a viable solution to
recruiting and retaining teachers. She noted some difficulties facing reservations
also affect rural communities across the country, and these programs have the
potential to be widely implemented and successful.
Freeman, who has been researching how the Impact Aid community is using
technology, presented his findings regarding technology in Indian Land districts
from the survey many of you have recently completed.
Many of these
districts have been
leaders in educational
technology as a way
to address the unique
challenges
of
reservation life and
develop 21st century
skills. A majority of
these districts use
online courses as a
way to expand course
offerings
when
qualified
staff
members cannot be
found for various
subjects, particularly
foreign languages.
