We are thrilled to report that 30,000 children in Toronto benefitted from our program and enjoyed inspiring events valued at 1 million dollars in 2011. We are equally pleased to report that we achieved our goal and partnered with 15 new child-serving agencies allowing us to reach thousands of new children in need in our city. We know that all children are positively influenced by their attendance at live events but still barriers prevent many of them from accessing these events. Kids Up Front is dedicated to improving the lives of children by removing these barriers and connecting all children to our great city. We are seeing the benefits! For many children seeing their heroes live inspires them to engage in activities they otherwise would not have connected with. Through our on-going communication with our agency partners we know that participation at Kids Up Front events not only inspires children to express an interest in a new sport or activity but we have also heard many times that participation at Kids Up Front events is encouraging children to actively pursue a new sport or activity. Here is what one mother had to say; “He had never been to a hockey game we simply could not spend the money to buy tickets for ourselves. Thanks to Kids Up Front, he was able to attend a game with his community support aide person, and had an absolutely wonderful time. He has been talking about hockey ever since and has even started to take ice skating lessons which he loves.” A mother from West Scarborough Neighbourhood Boys’ & Girls’ Club This is just one of the many uplifting notes we have received that indicates that opportunities from Kids Up Front provides motivation and inspiration for children resulting in participation in new the activities. The feedback we receive from children and families everyday confirms that we are reaching our goal – we are improving the lives of children. We could not be making these meaningful connections between children and their city without the support of many. A look through the annual report will reveal that 2011 was a tremendous year for us and that is because of the support from the generous donors mentioned in the pages to follow. I would especially like to recognize Corus Entertainment, The Harry E. Foster Charitable Foundation, TD Financial Group, the Ontario Trillium Foundation and CIBC Children’s Foundation for their consistent commitment to our program. Thank you to all who have been involved with Kids Up Front in 2011 whether it’s been through a donation of a ticket or a financial gift. While looking back over the past year creates feelings of pride and optimism, the reality is the number of kids living in poverty in Toronto continues to grow and the need for our service is more important than ever. So, on behalf of the thousands of kids that we serve, please continue to support Kids Up Front so we can improve our capacity and strengthen our program delivery and ultimately make more children happy in 2012. With huge gratitude, Lindsay Oughtred Executive Director Lindsay Oughtred and Tanya Frosst Tanya Frosst Program Coordinator 1. Kids Up Front Foundation Toronto Programs Can't Use Your Tickets? Can’t Use Your Tickets? is our trademark program and it is about distributing donated tickets. We work in partnership with sports teams, entertainment organizations, concert promoters, special event organizers, theatre groups, venues, corporations and individuals to ensure that empty seats are filled with kids that could really benefit. Having empty seats at any event is a lost opportunity for a child in need. Kids Up Front redistributes tickets fairly and efficiently through its partnerships with local child-serving charitable agencies. The positive impacts are enormous. Kids are dreaming the "possible," experiencing interaction with their peers and having the opportunity to bond with their families. You have tickets you can't use We all work together to build stronger communities Our partner agencies give them to children in need THANK YOU! You donate them to us We distribute them to child-serving partner agencies “I just wanted to say thank you to Kids up Front - what an amazing show and awesome seats. My son had a huge smile ear to ear for the full show. Seeing my son light up the way he did when he watched the show is a memory I will forever cherish. When I was young my parents took me to see the Rockettes at Radio City and for me to have the opportunity to share a childhood memory with my son is priceless.” Parent, Toronto People with AIDS Foundation “Thanks for the tickets to watch the Toronto Raptors. It was my dream to see the Raptors live. My brother is 5 years old and he was excited to see Chris Bosh live because he likes him sooo much. I was so happy when my mom told me we had free tickets for the basketball game. I had the best day ever. I really appreciate the tickets.” Talib, age 9, Toronto “It was absolutely amazing; I can’t thank you enough for tickets to So You Think You Can Dance. The kids loved it. I didn’t tell them until we actually got downtown and picked up the tickets, then I let my son read the tickets, I wish you could have seen his face, he couldn’t believe it. The seats were unbelievable. My daughter has just started dance classes - first time I have ever been able to sign her up for anything. She told me that she wants to dance like that when she gets older. Wait until she tells her dance teacher. Honestly they couldn’t have come at a better time. Thanks millions!” Parent of CAMH client 2. Thank you Can't Use Your Tickets? Program Supporter: Kids Up Front Foundation Toronto Programs Kids Count Kids Count is an event-based program that provides kids with opportunities that can have life-long impact. Giving kids an opportunity to participate in activities and achieve their goals, while learning how to work with one another builds trust, self-esteem and confidence -- skills that are essential for a healthy, balanced life. We know our programs are making a difference. Kids Count takes Kids Up Front’s signature ticketing recycling program, “Can’t Use Your Tickets?” one step further to turn kids from passively watching to actively doing. Kids Count encourages kids to become active participants in sporting and recreational activities and engages kids in arts and cultural endeavors for the first time. Kids Count inspires children by exposing them to sport and recreation as well as takes kids out of the stands and onto the field, out of the audience and onto the stage, and turns kids from observers into players. “I am more determined than ever to learn how to play!” Kids Up Front ticket recipient Thank you Kids Count Program Supporter: CIBC Theatre for All Kids Up Front Foundation is pleased to announce our new National partnership with CIBC in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Toronto. The CIBC Theatre for All Program provides children in Canada with the opportunity to experience a live theatre production, the ballet, or the symphony to educate and inspire. Through CIBC Theatre for All we have the potential to reach future performers and ignite the creative spark that can lead kids to a life connected with the arts. The benefits of exposure to arts and culture have been recognized and documented for many years, yet many children in Canada still experience barriers to community participation. “Thank you SO much for the tickets. Joshua was literally on the edge of his seat all night. During intermission, he hurriedly went to see the orchestra and during the performance was thrilled to have gotten a “high five” from the Tin Man. We truly appreciate the opportunity to have gotten to participate in this event.” Parent, Tropicana Community Services 3. Kids Up Front Foundation Toronto Agency Partners 4. The kids felt this was the best trip of the summer. They were excited to go to Ontario Place; for many of them this was their first trip to Ontario Place and loved it so much they wanted to go back again! Thanks again to Ontario Place for this wonderful opportunity – it really was a joy, and summer highlight, for those children who attended.” Staff, Warden Woods Community Centre Art City students visit the Toronto Zoo “Kids Up Front is helping Art City achieve their goal of providing free and accessible art programs to the children and youth of St. James Town. The group had a wonderful day at the zoo and especially enjoyed the butterfly conservatory. Thank you Kids Up Front for this wonderful opportunity." Staff, Art City in St. Jamestown Triple Balance Community Services received a suite to a Maple Leafs game "I have watched the Leafs all my life and I always wanted to go to see them play but I never got the opportunity until today. Thank you Kids Up Front Foundation for letting me see them for the first time. When I got home I still couldn't believe I watched them live and I was in Brian Burke’s box and I was on the big screen, it was the best night of my life!" Youth, Triple Balance Community Services A family from Arab Community Centre of Toronto cheer on the Blue Jays "I wanted to thank Kids Up Front for giving me the opportunity to take my two girls to the Blue Jays game. I would have never been able to offer or provide such an opportunity to my girls if it was not for the generosity of Kids Up Front . My girls really loved the game and I feel great as a mother being able to tell my kids that– "today we are going to the Rogers Centre to watch a game." Parent, Arab Community Centre of Toronto The Youth Council from Boys & Girls Club of West Scarborough meet Marlies’ goalie Ben Scrivens “The youth and I had a blast at the Marlies game! A couple of youth had never been to a hockey game before, and one was new to the city of Toronto. Another said that she wants to come back and bring all of her family. Ben was very welcoming and eager to answer our questions. Thank you Kids Up Front for this amazing opportunity!” Youth Council Coordinator, Boys & Girls Club of West Scarborough 5. Kids Up Front Foundation Toronto Partnerships Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Kids Up Front would like to recognize and thank MLSE for being, once again, our BIGGEST ticket donor in 2011! “I wanted to let you know how amazed the youth were at the Leaf game. I had 6 youth with me in the box seats - the most amazing seats ever. One of the girls said she wasn’t a fan of hockey but she is now.” Youth Coordinator, Toronto Council Fire Native Cultural Centre “Coming from a place like Haiti and having this opportunity is huge for us as a family. Our children have wanted to go to a live Raptors game since they arrived in Toronto a couple of years ago and finally this opportunity happened. We were all so happy, excited and thankful for this gift. The opportunity you gave us will never be forgotten. One day, we hope that one of the boys will be a famous player and we can say Kids Up Front gave us the first opportunity to see a LIVE game.” Parent, South African Women for Women Royal Ontario Museum Kids Up Front Foundation Toronto and the Royal Ontario Museum have been working together since 2009. Through the ROMCAN program (ROM’s Community Access Network), our ticket allocation doubled in 2011. Thanks to this wonderful partnership, we are assisting the ROM in their initiative to make the museum accessible to all. “I want to say thank you for the tickets to the ROM. It was really fun. We went to the dinosaur exhibit. We saw all the old clothing people used to wear and we also saw all the birds and animals I didn’t even know of. The speech with Judith Snow was amazing. She made me realize that no matter what kind of person you are, if you have a disability or something like that, you can still do anything if you have the help and support of someone.“ Student, Rose of Durham 2011 “BIG” Ticket Donors 6. Organizations like Kids Up Front give us an opportunity to provide special moments in these girls’ lives; these are outings we generally would not be able to provide due to funding. Again, thank you for your support and ongoing involvement.” Staff, Avalon Children’s Residence: Adolescent Girls Program “ Ethen (our 8 year old), my husband and I would like to thank Kids Up Front for the great outing to the baseball game this past Sunday. Ethen hummed "Take me out to the ballgame" when he found out about the tickets and has ever since. Ethen has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and these outings mean so much to us. We are making wonderful memories and will treasure these moments forever!” Parent, Muscular Dystrophy Canada Ontario Science Centre Kids Up Front is proud to announce our exciting new partnership with the Ontario Science Centre. We teamed up with the OSC in 2011 to provide hundreds of children and youth with the opportunity to experience this fun and educational Toronto landmark for the first time. "The kids really got to enjoy learning in a new way. One student even said who knew gravity could be fun. Trips like these are just not possible for our students. Thanks for the great opportunity." Principal, TDSB The free tickets we have provided through Kids Up Front donations have helped reduce the social isolation that many of our clients struggle with and allowed them a chance to involve their children in events that is so beneficial to their overall health and wellbeing. Kids Up Front has been invaluable in helping us make a positive difference." Murray Jose, Executive Director People With AIDS Toronto 7.
