Dear Members & Friends,

It is hard to believe that three years have passed since we opened the
doors of our property in Caves Valley. We’ve settled into our new home,
and today Irvine is an active, bustling year-round community resource
center, providing environmental education programs and recreation
activities for 50,000 visitors annually.

This past year was an exceptionally exciting one for Irvine. To name a few
accomplishments, we:

•Founded a licensed Nature Preschool, one of just 20 in the nation
•Expanded education programs, including two new seminars:
Deer Management and Feathers in Flight
4
•Completed the construction of a certified Outdoor Classroom
4
•Advanced the reforestation and habitat diversification of our property
by planting 7,000 trees and 10 acres of native meadows

We also successfully met the financial challenges associated with our new
facility during a recession by carefully reviewing the focus of and energizing
our programming. This hard work resulted in a significant strengthening of
our financial position.

We completed a new strategic plan entitled Trail Map for the Future which
points the way for Irvine’s direction over the next three years, from 2011 to
2014. This plan will be our compass, guiding us on a carefully planned path,
propelling us to greater heights as a leader in environmental education in
central Maryland.

These new initiatives help us further our mission, and could not have been
accomplished without your support. Last year’s donors gave in historic ways
with a nearly 50 percent increase in gifts compared to the previous year.

Our success is in large part because of the generous support we received
from you. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, the Staff and the Volunteers

Through its program initiatives, Irvine inspires
appreciation and respect for nature, while increasing
awareness and encouraging sustainability. Irvine
seeks to positively impact the state of environmental
education through innovative programming
while simultaneously informing the public about
environmental stewardship to improve conservation
of natural resources for the future. Last year, 50,000
people shared our mission.
How
do we educate?
Irvine Nature Center’s school
field trip program plays a
significant role in its on-site
programming. Irvine led 2,140
field
students and teachers from 75
trips
schools in the region during the
2010-11 academic year. These
outdoor trips to Irvine include
hands-on experiences that encourage
scientific inquiry. For each field trip, Irvine
provides teachers with cost-free materials that
supplement lesson plans and link to Maryland state science
criteria. These materials offer suggestions for related classroom
activities, fact sheets, background information, a glossary and
bibliography. Age-appropriate subjects focus on wildlife, ecological
concepts, environment and conservation.
Irvine’s classroom outreach program enables Irvine’s naturalists to
travel to schools throughout the Baltimore region. Last year, Irvine
naturalists led 40 outreach programs
for 1,750 students. Addressing

afford off-site field trips; Irvine

brings nature to their classrooms.

Irvine offered 43 different sessions
of its Summer Nature Camp
over 11 weeks. More than 500
children ages 2-15 learned about
Maryland’s ecology and natural
history by exploring the 116 acres
camps
of woodlands, meadows, wetlands
and streams at Irvine, and other Maryland
locations. Campers were able to participate in
multiple weeks of camp, and Irvine also provided before- and
after-camp care. Irvine’s camp is a Maryland state-certified youth
camp that features small group sizes and loads of fun. Irvine also
began offering ‘Day-Off Camps’ and ‘Spring Break Camps’ during
the school year. These provided fun and educational activities for
students whenever school was not in session.

The Nature Preschool at Irvine
is an accredited early childhood
education program that combines
the
academic development with
nature
environmental study for
preschool
preschool-aged children. The
preschool focuses on using
science-based inquiry, creative
arts and outdoor exploration in
order to balance a young child’s cognitive,
physical and emotional development and lay
a foundation for success in their elementary years and
beyond. The Nature Preschool at Irvine is one of only 20 early
childhood development environmental education programs in the
United States. The Nature Preschool received its state accreditation
as a licensed preschool in September 2010.

reach thousands of individuals
in 2011. These included two
new annual seminars on deer
management and birds, plus its traditional Native Plant Seminar & Sale. In
addition, Irvine’s annual
PumpkinFest, Earth Day ­–
Kids Unplugged Event, Project
Clean Stream and Student Art Exhibition attracted
hundreds of visitors.
These adult courses were developed for amateur nature
enthusiasts and professionals in the field and provide an excellent opportunity to learn about a wide variety of subjects in greater depth. The courses balance natural history and ecology information with

issues and gaining practical
experience on how to be

Irvine traveled into neighboring communities offering a wide variety of programs for senior centers,
libraries, garden clubs and scouts, as well as at local fairs and festivals. Irvine presented 102 community
programs for more than 4,200 participants on topics ranging from birds, native plants, wildlife ecology, forests, pollinators and more.

programs
Irvine hosted 85 programs for
the general public on a variety
of topics for children, adults
and families. Nearly 700
people signed up for programs
that lasted anywhere from
a few hours to a full day on
topics such as beekeeping,
nature photography, junior
naturalists and growing a
pizza garden. Irvine began
offering many of these
programs, which were
listed in its quarterly course
catalog, free to members.
The Outdoor Classroom was completed over the summer. Its concept was developed through field-tested,
research-based principles for creating effective spaces that support academic and cognitive development through interaction with the natural world. The entire space is divided into distinct activity areas that promote a different purpose, lesson or development process in children. Field-tested designs and components include:
•Structures for playing, climbing and building
•Materials that are sustainable and natural, and feature the textures, smells and beauty of the native environment
•Activities to develop children’s observation skills and imagination
