2013 Annual Report
Dear Friends,
We both had the honor of inviting Cheri Bailly-Jacobs to speak at a recent board meeting, and as we
look back on our accomplishments of 2013, we wanted to share her story with you, because it illustrates
our unduplicated scope of services in support of those with life-limiting conditions.

“My husband, Bob, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s
disease in 2002. We chose not to keep the diagnosis a
secret and began to tell neighbors and friends. Their
response was not always as supportive as we would
have hoped. It was our first experience of the fear and
shame that still surrounds the disease. However, things
began to change for both of us when I read an article
about Adult Day Services starting the Mind Boosters
program. Bob decided to try it. He was always
outgoing and made friends the first day with the other
three participants, and since they all had the same
condition, developed a real camaraderie. It also gave
me a much-needed respite as his sole caregiver.

After four years, Bob began to have a hard time with
some of the program’s activities. Adult Day Services
Program Director Celine Regalia met with me to
discuss Bob’s difficulty and frustration, and suggested
that he might be ready for the Adult Day Services
(ADS) program.

I worried, because I knew he and his friends in
Mind Boosters didn’t “need” ADS, but he decided to
try it anyway, mostly to give me more of a break. My
concern about his adjusting to a new program was
unfounded: “It was great,” Bob pronounced the first
day. The customized activities and services kept him
engaged without feeling frustrated, and after a while,
Bob chose to attend only Adult Day Services, going
five days a week for the next three years.
In 2010, a social worker at ADS who worked closely
with Bob asked to meet with us. She described to
me his dramatic functional decline during the last
two months. His physical decline and anxiety had
been causing me great difficulties at home, but I was
unaware of the problems it was causing at ADS. She
gently suggested to us that it might be a good time to
consider Hospice services.
Nobody wants to hear those words, but she explained to
Bob that Hospice could provide more care—and with
that, he would be able to stay home rather than move
into a nursing facility. We had tried respite programs at
care facilities, and not all the experiences had been good,
so Hospice allayed Bob’s biggest fear of all: not being
able to live at home. I can’t tell you what a relief it was
to both of us to know there was another option.
Bob began receiving care at home from the Hospice
team, who also offered me much-needed respite and
emotional support. Bob was on Hospice services for
13 months before he passed away in 2011—as he
had wished, in our own home.
Accepting each stage of an illness is so incredibly
hard. But having access to that continuum of care
meant there was always another step to help Bob
find some peace while the decline took its toll. I
run my own human resources consulting business, so
I’m always watching how people connect and work
together. The team at NVHADS embraced Bob
through each stage and each transition, and because
of that, his life was so much better—as was mine.
They truly gave us the care and support to make the
best of the cards we were dealt.”
Each of our programs—Hospice, Adult Day Services, Transitions Palliative Care and our support
groups—is life changing on its own, but together, they offer individuals facing life-limiting illness, as
Cheri said, “another step to find some peace.”
That’s how we measure success; by the quality of life provided to each individual we touch. And we
thank you with all our hearts for sharing and supporting that vision.

Linda Pidgeon
Linda Pidgeon knows how to advocate for others, eloquently, and has put
those skills to work to make her community, as she puts it, “more responsive to
all who live here.” She’s worked with ParentsCAN, Head Start and First Five,
among others, helped with NVHADS’s capital campaign and has volunteered
her time for events such as Hands Across the Valley and Auction Napa Valley.
After years of helping improve quality of life for so many, it was for her
parents’ quality of life that she turned to Napa Valley Hospice for help.
Her first experience with a hospice program, she admits, was not the most
positive. Her husband, Michael, was a dentist in Sacramento when he was
diagnosed with kidney cancer. “It was two months from his working full
time to dying. His illness was so fast and so intense, and while the hospice
there would check in on him medically and I could call if there was an
emergency, I felt I always had to be the capable one, keeping it all together.”
After Michael died, Linda moved back to Napa in 1991 with her three
children to be closer to family. In 2003, her father, John, was diagnosed
with Parkinson’s disease, which affected him both mentally and physically.
“It was very hard on my parents, because their relationship was such that he
was the provider and my mother, Florence, was the caregiver.” John, through
his career in commercial development and as an executive director of the
Napa Chamber of Commerce, was instrumental in developing a number
of commercial properties in Napa and bringing new businesses into the
community. He was very involved in numerous civic organizations. “He
was used to making decisions, making things happen, and when he became
ill, he was frustrated that he couldn’t be strong for my mother. And she was
frustrated that, despite her efforts, she couldn’t make him better.”
critical of loved ones, being her sounding board
became difficult.
Linda enlisted Hospice services for her mother.
Hospice staff were able to not only ensure her
physical needs were met, but were there for her
emotionally and mentally as well, without the
dynamics of a family relationship getting in the way.
“My sister and I had different ways of coping with
our mother’s illness, which also made it hard to be
there for mom. But knowing others who knew,
understood and honored our mother’s perspective
and wishes were there for her, helped us cope.”
Florence passed away four months to the day from
John: November 23, 2013. “With both my parents,
having Hospice there allowed them each to approach
their end of life on their own terms and in their own
way. And it allowed both my sister and me to be able
to process and deal with our parents’ illnesses and
deaths as we needed to, as well.
“They truly were an advocate for us as a family,
and for each of us as individuals.”

was able to experience end of life as he needed to.”

Ed & Jayne Morrell
In August 2011, Ed Morrell, a retired
pharmaceutical marketing & sales executive and
an avid golfer, suffered a heart attack and two
strokes not long after undergoing knee surgery.
He recovered well from the strokes, but he was
unable to undergo open-heart surgery, and his
doctor recommended Hospice care.
Napa Valley Hospice began providing care for Ed
in his home, which he says was “fantastic.” Then
in early 2012, his heart disease stabilized to the
point where he no longer met the criteria for the
Medicare hospice care benefit.
He still faced the same life-limiting symptoms
and medical challenges, however, and needed a
coordinated plan of healthcare and support to
manage his disease.
“With an advanced condition, your whole life
changes,” Ed’s wife, Jayne, explains. “You’re
limited in what you can do or where you can go.
Friends start to drift away, not because they’re
uncaring, but because you’re busy just taking care
of yourselves and aren’t able to participate fully in
their lives.”
check in on us. She’s attentive, never rushes and makes sure we have what we
need—medically, emotionally, spiritually.”
“Angela works directly with our doctors for us,” Jayne adds, “because she can
better advocate for Ed and communicate what he needs and why. It takes so
much of the pressure off both of us.”
“You have to play the cards life dealt you,” says Ed. “So I have good days and
then I’ll have down days, but Angela keeps me on a high plateau. I was really
struggling last year, and she arranged for Eric Vaughn, the Hospice chaplain,
to come out to the house to talk with me. He and I had a couple of sessions
that really helped me out of a hard place.”
“Ed is always up after a visit or call from Angela,”
Jayne says. “I honestly don’t know what we
would do without Transitions. You can only call
on family and friends to help so often with an
ongoing situation like this.”
“But what makes this organization even more special is that it’s obvious that
everyone involved, staff to volunteers, offer care that comes from love, not
duty. You can feel it, and it truly makes a difference.”
It’s an overwhelming situation for patient and
caregiver—and even though Jayne is a retired
nurse, it would have been more than she or any
caregiver should have to manage alone.

Colin Shelton
Ask anyone who knows Colin and the first thing they’ll tell you about him is
“He’s a very social person.” He’s also a proud, independent man, having moved
away from family in England as a young man to strike out on his own in the US.
But 40 years ago, Colin was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS), which left
his right side weak, making him dependent on either a walker or a scooter to get
around. He began attending Adult Day Services a few years ago for the regular
movement and exercise, and the chance to socialize with other participants.
Little did anyone realize when he started how ADS would also give him
the skills and confidence to accept not one but two once-in-a-lifetime
opportunities last year—and to help him cope with a new challenge this year.
“I can’t begin to say how wonderful the ADS
team has been, all around,” Selma says. “They’re
caring for my husband—physically, mentally and
socially—and they always go above and beyond.
You can tell this is a special place in their hearts.
“It’s a comfort to know that through all the
challenges—good and bad—they are here, ready
to meet the next one.”
In 2013, Adult Day Services (ADS) was

When Colin’s daughter, Kirsty, asked him to walk her down the aisle at her
wedding early last year, Colin hatched a plan with his wife and the team at
Adult Day Services to walk her down the aisle unassisted. The ADS team
put together an individualized program to strengthen his legs and improve
his balance, and five months later, he proudly walked Kirsty down the
aisle—a rocky path along a lakeshore, no less. “Seeing the confidence in my
father’s stride was the best wedding gift ever,” said Kirsty.

Ulla Brown
Ulla Brown isn’t one to do things in
an indirect way.
“I like being involved and being
hands on,” Ulla states. “I believe it’s
our obligation to do what we can for
others. To have a calling - I strongly
believe in that.
“There are so many fabulous
organizations that serve humanity, but
Hospice, to me, is the most amazing.
Dignity is such an important part of
the last stage in life, and that’s what
Napa Valley Hospice does so beautifully,
treating those it cares for as a whole
person, not just a sick patient.
“They make life livable for those facing
the end of life,” she says. “It’s what we
all deserve. And that’s why I chose to
support Napa Valley Hospice & Adult
Day Services.”
While living in North Carolina at the
end of the ’90s, Ulla was approached by
an acquaintance to serve on the board
of the local Hospice organization. Not
knowing much about Hospice, she
declined, but then decided to learn
more by getting involved in a more
hands-on way: working directly with
Hospice clients and their families, so
she joined a group of peers to be trained
as a Hospice volunteer.
"This training made me face that. I wasn’t ready at that moment, but continuing
through the process, I was able to heal and learn, and I ended up working as a patient
care volunteer for six years.
It was an amazing experience. I had decided to
serve others the way I would have loved my Mom to
end her life, in dignity and with peace.
“This is what Hospice does. Everybody on the Hospice team that I’ve met strives to
serve our patients with so much love, their own dignity and care, that I was stunned
about that kind of dedication, empathy and passion.
“It’s a good school to learn about humanity, and that death need not be sad and cruel.
I had some very sad--but also very uplifting and wonderful--experiences being with
my patients. It was sometimes amazing and made me smile, there was so much love in
the air, it was beautiful.”
Ulla and her husband John moved to Napa Valley in 2002, and she immediately got
in touch with Napa Valley Hospice to continue volunteering with patients.
One day, in a conversation with a staff member, the benefits of making a gift to Napa
Valley Hospice in a will or estate came up. “We support Napa Valley Hospice every
year, and including them in my will just really made sense to me,” says Ulla.
“I love the thought that my donations help others,” she says, “and that by including
Napa Valley Hospice in my will, I will provide help even to those who come after me.
“In Hospice words, may I say to all of you – think about it, give it a thought …”

Transforming Castoffs into Treasure
Bill and Lucy Smail
One of the benefits of volunteering for NVHADS is the range of skills that can
be put to good use for the benefit of our programs, and Bill and Lucy Smail
are living proof.
The two grew up and married in San Francisco. They raised a family in
Minnesota and Florida while Bill was working for Honeywell, and returned to
California in 1979 when Bill went to work for Lockheed. As a child, Lucy had
traveled through Napa Valley many times on family trips up to Clear Lake,
and later with her own family after her parents retired there. In 1988, Bill and
Lucy bought a home in Angwin and moved there full-time in 1998 after
retiring, in order to be closer to her parents.
Both have volunteered for La Boheme, our resale store on Main Street in
St. Helena and Act 2, our donation center on La Fata in St. Helena, since
their opening two years ago.
Bill is our “Swiss Army knife” for furniture repairs, minor to major. He began
building furniture on his own in high school and has done so ever since.
For Act 2, he tightens legs, glues frames, resurfaces, refinishes, rebuilds and
matches stains. He has restored castoffs so beautifully that they are mistaken
for new. He also repairs battery-operated watches that are donated.
Lucy, who makes jewelry with her daughter, takes care of jewelry donations
to La Boheme: sorting, repairing, cleaning, researching and pricing the
pieces for sale. “It can be tedious work to some, but I like working with
jewelry, so it’s a nice way to keep busy while helping a community program.”

A Welcome Face
Danielle Brown
If you stop by the NVHADS office on a Thursday morning, the first
person you’ll most likely meet will be Danielle, a woman who wears (and
knits) many hats at NVHADS.
With her French accent and Chihuahua companion Maria Elena, Danielle
is a well-known figure at the reception desk, greeting and directing guests,
and helping with mailings. When things are quiet, she keeps busy with
knitting and crocheting.
On Tuesday afternoons, she can be
found in Adult Day Services, serving
lunch to participants and helping with
small-group activities: knitting and
crocheting with one group, hosting
current event discussions with another.
Danielle is also trained to provide
in-home respite care, where she spends
2-3 hours with a patient to give the
caregiver a break or time to take care
of other responsibilities. “Sometimes
we talk, or I bring games such as
dominos or word games to play with
the patient.” She also visits the Veteran’s
Home in Yountville once a week to
provide company to a Transitions client
living there.
Like many volunteers, Danielle first learned about NVHADS as a caregiver
herself. Her late husband was on hospice service for 3-4 months. “The
service was fantastic,” she says. “They were so good to my husband and
to me. The nurse was there when he died and she helped with everything.
She offered to trim a lock of his hair for me to keep, and even suggested
tucking a snippet of our dog’s hair in my husband’s pocket, because she
knew how important our dog was to him.”
In addition, her mother attended Adult Day Services for three years and
also had Hospice care before she passed away.
“If I’m going to volunteer, I want to do something that gives back,
something that is truly needed by others,” she explains. “I feel I owe
NVHADS, but it’s a real pleasure to work here. I’ve worked in banking
and as a teacher, and never worked with such a nice group of people. The
staff reach out to show their appreciation for what we do.”
“The nice thing about volunteering here is that if you just want to work
a few hours in a quiet environment, something like the reception desk
is perfect. If you want to do something more involved, there are lots of
opportunities.”
