Travelling from the Fiumicino Airport, guests will pass by the remarkable Appian Way, Castel Gandolfo
(and lake), Appia Antica and the city centre to arrive at the Gran Melià Rome Villa Agrippina. The original
paving of this great road was built in 312 BCE under Appius Claudius Ceacus and has been protected as
a Regional Park. Among the many sights near Rome are great mausoleums, stadiums and burial sites
from the Classical Age. Past the Grande Raccordo Anulare ring road, in correspondence to the
Frattocchie locality, the Via enters the territory of the Castelli Romani Regional Park with its many
ancient villages. Castel Gandolfo, perched on the sharp ridge overlooking Lake Albano, is renowned as
the traditional vacation residence of the Pope. The opposite shore of the lake is dominated by Marino,
known for its wine and its Grape Fair but also rich in historic monuments, such as the collegiate church of
Saint Barnabas and the Colonna family’s Renaissance palace.

NORTH ROUTE
From Fiumicino Airport: Aurelia, Bracciano/Martignano lake, Flaminia or Cassia bis, city centre, Gran
Melià Rome Villa Agrippina. Leave Rome towards the GRA ring-road, the Via reaches the so-called ‘Tomb
of Nero’ (across from Via Cassia no. 750), in actual fact not his sepulchre at all but nonetheless an
impressive sarcophagus set on a brick base. Just before the left turnoff toward Olgiata, a detour leads to
Isola Farnese, on a ridge rising up between two ravines. Its ancient town centre grew up at the feet of
the Ferraioli Castle, which in later times passed to the Farnese family and then to the Orsinis. On the way
out of town, back toward to the Via Cassia, lie the ruins of Veio, a wealthy and powerful Etruscan city in
6th century BCE, today incorporated in the Regional Park to which it lends its name. The medieval centre
of Formello, built to dominate two narrow valleys, also beckons visitors. As the consular road enters the
Baccano area it dives into a crater bowl upwards of 13 square kilometres in size; on its rim is the Roman
– and later medieval – post-station of Baccanae, where traces of the ancient roadway are visible along
the route of the Via Cassia Antica.
