Ebenezer, Willowbank, Mt Forbes EXPANDED IPSWICH HERITAGE STUDY Ebenezer, Willowbank, Mt Forbes EXPANDED IPSWICH HERITAGE STUDY Name: Spring Hill Category: Farm Location: Ebenezer Road, Ebenezer RPD: RP 176308/2 Listing boundary: House yard and area containing outbuildings Other listings: Nil Significance level: State EB-01-0002 08 History: John Armstrong immigrated from Ireland in 1852. He first worked at Eskdale then took up 82 acres of land at Seven Mile (now Ebenezer) in 1856. The family built their first hut near the riverbank; it was flooded and then moved to higher ground - this site is still marked by date palms. A second home was built in 1878 on a hill overlooking the river, reusing some of the timber from the first home. This is the older section of the present house. A house was built in 1890 on the south-west corner of Portion 35. About 1900, it was moved to become a second wing of the main house; at this time, two extra bedrooms and a verandah were added. The house is still owned and occupied by the Armstrong family and is a rare example of a property which is still owned by the original selectors. Other members of the family live in the area. Description: The complex occupies a knoll overlooking a large lagoon on river flats on the south bank of the Bremer River. 1878 wing: A lowset timber framed cottage with walls clad in unpainted weatherboard and with a corrugated galvanised iron roof which changes pitch to a simple skillion over the open front verandah and the rear section. Some original multi-paned colonial sash windows remain, as does some of the interior tongue and groove boarding to walls and ceilings. Recent works include installation of 1930s french doors (from a family property at Seven Mile) and some plasterboard linings. Substantial parts of the original adzed hardwood joists and bearers including bedlogs remain, as do some of the earlier timber stumps. This building has been raised approx 300mm using sympathetic carpentry techniques. 1890 wing: Lowset timber building with open verandahs on all sides. The external walls are of exposed stud framing, the main roof is corrugated galvanised iron clad hipped roof which is separated from a simple skillion roof over the verandahs. The verandahs have simple broomstick balustrading and a substantial amount of original colonial sashes and french doors remain. The original plan-form is intact and the building sits on timber stumps. The western verandah of this building connects to the 1878 wing in the form of a breezeway. Grounds: Entrance to the house is through a remarkable mature bougainvillea hedge approx 5metres high which completely screens the approach to the building. The grounds include mature fig trees, pepperinas, jacarandas and pines. Date palms on a lower level mark the position of the former house. Outbuildings: Timber cream shed c1900 with a simple gable roof, exposed stud framing and vertical tongue and groove sheeting; roof overhang supported on timber posts. The original door is intact. Other buildings include a contemporary zincalume machinery shed and garage and other timber sheds. Additional timber used in recent works was cut on the property. Significance: This property is a place of cultural heritage significance and satisfies one or more of the criteria in Division 13.6 of Local Law 30 of the Ipswich Town Planning Scheme as evidenced by, but not exclusive to, the following statement of significance, based on Criteria a, b, d, e, g.
