With almost one year to go before the Summer Olympic Games 2016,
Omega – the watch brand that has been timing the Olympics for years
– announces new plans for the 12-month countdown. The Games will
take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from August 5 to 21, 2016. More
than 10,000 athletes from 205 countries will complete for muchcoveted medals and recognition in this South American country.
Omega is the Official Timekeeper of the event – a role it has held on
26 occasions since the 1932 Olympics. Omega’s tireless research and
development into timing has yielded some of the most precise timing in
the world. The brand has built elaborate, incredibly technical
equipment that broadcasts event times almost instantaneously. In fact,
to time the Games for the 27th time, the brand brings in more than 250
on-site professionals, trains hundreds of volunteers and ships in more
than 200 tons of cutting-edge equipment. You can read an in-depth
article about the brand’s timing here.

Typically, in the year leading up to the Olympics, Omega builds
countdown clocks around the city and plans its on-site timing. This
year, though, the brand also unveils a charity component. Revealed
just minutes ago at an event in Rio de Janeiro, Omega announced its
partnership with Viva Rio, a Brazilian non-profit organization that works
in health, education, environment and other areas to promote a culture
of peace and social inclusion.

Now, together with Viva Rio, Omega has devised a community
countdown that involves 12 “social action” projects that will take place
over the course of 12 months. The program is aimed at strengthening
the educational and socioeconomic growth in Rio by focusing on
children and their families in an effort to give back to the host city and
leave a lasting impression.
Over the years, Omega has researched and developed all sorts of new technology to time the Olympic Games
The first Social Action (Social Action #1) is support for vulnerable
mothers. Expected to benefit approximately 500 women annually, this
first project takes place in the Costa Barros, North Zone, of Rio, where
violence is exceptionally high. Omega will revitalize a specialize center
where pregnant women and mothers can gain help, education and
healthcare from a multi-disciplinary team of professionals.

Additionally, Omega has developed a program to raise awareness and
additional funds for all of the Viva Rio projects. BY utilizing the
organization’s heart-shaped logo, Omega has created a social
activation campaign — #OmegaVivaRio. Through multiple social
media platforms (including facebook instagram and twitter), Omega
invites users to create their own heart symbol and post it. For every
heart posted with the hash tag (#omegavivario), Omega will donate 16
cents to the charity as an additional pledge of commitment.
Omega Seamaster Bullhead Rio 2016 watch
Earlier this year, at BaselWorld 2015, Omega unveiled the newest
watch designed for the Summer Games. The Seamaster Bullhead Rio
2016 Limited Edition watch celebrates Omega’s rich heritage of
precision and innovation. The watch features an Olympic Rings color
scheme. The blue leather strap features stitching on each side in
yellow, green, red and black to recall the colors of the Olympic rings. The 60-minutes rotating inner-bezel also sports the color theme.

The alluring case shape is inspired by a watch first unveiled by the
brand in 1969 that was used by rally drivers to time laps. The Bullhead
Rio 2016 watch is powered by Omega’s Co-Axial Chronograph Caliber
3113, with a central seconds hand and a 30-minute recorder at 12:00.
The Rio 2016 Olympic Game logo is engraved on the case back. Just
316 pieces will be made to honor the third time that golf ahs been
included in the Olympic Games and to mark the year 2016. The watch
retails for just about $9,600.
