Over the coming weeks our focus is to improve the overall level of service we provide. Our ultimate goal is to strive for excellence by engaging and challenging the staff. Our new chef, Matt Wolff has been introducing new and exciting lunch and dinner specials to tantalize your taste buds. We have also introduced some wonderful new boutique wines. Some of these fantastic wines are being featured in our wine tastings. We look forward to the coming months to showcase these improvements to our members and guests. Along with Thanksgiving, Members Holiday Party and the New Year’s Gala we are excited to see the restaurant full of familiar faces and new members. With the holidays fast approaching it is nice to have different wines on hand to satisfy all your guests’ tastes and pair with all your meals. My suggestion is to always start with the five following wines, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. These five varietals will cover your needs and can handle a wide variety of foods that are being served. Riesling – This fruit forward low alcohol wine pairs well with a large selection of appetizers, fruit trays and is a delight with honeyed ham, roasted veggies, seafood and spicy fare. Rieslings such as: Trimbach, Hogue, Pacific Rim, Dr. Loosen, Tesch, Schloss Johannisberg, Fritz Haag and JJ Prüm. Sauvignon Blanc – Will add a herby, earthy refreshing varietal with turkey and stuffing, soups, quiche, fish, seafood, and many ethnic entrees. Sauvignon Blancs such as: Dashwood, Kim Crawford, Starborough Marlborough, St. Supery, Villa Maria Estate, Chateau St. Jean, Montes and Pascal Jolivet. Pinot Noir – This lighter bodied red is the perfect match with Brie, goat, gouda, artesian breads, veggie trays, stuffed mushrooms, baked ham, turkey breast or roasted duck. Pinot Noir such as: Meomi, Toroise Creek, Le Creama, Cakebread, Puligny-Montrachet and Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets. Shiraz/Syrah – American and Australian Shiraz’s tend to be more fruit forward than their traditional French counterparts. So bare that in mind when making your selection to pair with a meal. Shiraz pairs beautifully with smoked or grilled sausage platters, beef roasts, ham, salmon filet or pizza. Shiraz’s such as: Penfolds Grange, D'Arenberg, Chateau Tanunda,, Shoofly, Peter Lehmann, Bonterra, Darioush, Jean-Louis Denois and Tablas Creek. Cabernet Sauvignon – With its big bold flavors and full body consider pairing your Cab with blue cheese, Gorgonzola, Gouda, Parmesan, heavy duty red meats, smoked meats, and dark chocolates. Cabernet Sauvignon’s such as: Bianchi, Darioush, Michael Pozzan, Silver Oak, Montes, Chateau Pontet-Canet and Chateau Grand-Puy Ducasse. Whether you are serving these wines at your next holiday gathering or receiving them as gifts you are sure to enjoy them. And possibly find yourself a new favorite this holiday season! We all enjoyed the evening of socializing and reconnecting with other members. Deb organized a fun activity where we learned some very interesting facts about our fellow WGA members. For example, one of our members had baby shower thrown for her by Lauren Bacall and another one was in a muscle ad with Arnold Schwarzenegger! Opening Day this year was a doubleheader, with Thursday and Saturday events. Both were a huge success. Many thanks to Liz Lagos and Bev Boas, who beautifully planned both events, and to Nancy Williamson who helped with Saturday Opening Day. The event began with a gift. A sparkling CCC ball marker, given to us by Lauren and Daren on behalf of the Club, awaited each player in her golf cart. With our new “bling”, we enjoyed playing our first event of the season. After golf, we went to the dining room where martini glasses filled with pink golf balls were among the festive table decorations. We enjoyed a delicious lunch and lucky members won door prizes of fabulous libations. On Thursday, closest to the pin contests were won by Cheryl Stoker and Estrella Woeckner. In the first flight, Low Gross was won by Sandie Peer and Low Net was won by Cheryl Stoker. In the second flight, Low Gross was won by Ann Barclay and Low Net was won by Lori Ledbetter. On Saturday, Low Gross was won by Patti Yodice and Low Net by Marilyn Connors. Cheryl Stoker, repeating her feat from Thursday, won closest to the pin on Saturday too. Congratulations to our first winners of the season! WGA weekly play (on Thursdays and Saturdays) continues and our Match Play Tournament begins in October. We are proud to say that the WGA is 42 members strong this year and we are delighted to welcome new members Jan Barkett, Alena McGlone, and Kathy Rothschild. We all look forward to seeing you at golf and social events throughout the year. We are also happy to report that the Carrollwood Country Club team won the Women’s Summer Nassau League for the second year in a row. The CCC team was captained by WGA Members Suzie Patteson and Sandie Peer and WGA members played in all of the matches. Congratulations to all involved! Follow us on Twitter @CVSTSwimming Find us on Facebook CarrollwoodSwimming Tennis news A Carrollwood Country Club Tennis BY CHRIS CARY, TENNIS DIRECTOR In 2000, three young Carrollwood tennis juniors achieved a level of success that most tennis players only see in their dreams. Ryler DeHeart, Austin Krajicek and Connor Smith were part of a very small group of 4 players lead by Tennis Director, Steve Smith. At the time, they seemed to be just like any other club tennis kids in the area with slightly above average junior rankings in their respective age divisions. By the time 2008 rolled around, however, Connor was ranked #1 in boys 18s in Florida, Austin had won the very prestigious Kalamazoo Tournament earning him a direct entry into the US Open and Riler was seen on prime time TV playing world #1 player Rafael Nadal in the 2nd round of the US Open. Though the success of these three tennis players is a story in itself, the bigger story, to me, is how they were trained and instructed during the most important time of their tennis development. As one of the tennis professionals at the club during that time, I can tell you the instruction they received was highly criticized and ridiculed by other players, parents and coaches in the area. Many tennis juniors, in fact, would come and go – all saying that the instruction was too slow and not advanced enough for their “level.” Carrollwood Country Club Tennis Instruction was and still is the exact opposite of what you find on the Tennis Channel and at local tennis academies. It is a rock solid/ no frills fundamental system based on laws of physics , dimensions of the tennis court – not any coaches opinion or “unique” theory. TENNIS EVENTS & ACTIVITIES NOV. 2ND TO DEC. 12TH Afternoon Junior Tennis Program Group instruction in separate classes for ages 4 to 18 Monday through Thursday. NOV. 1ST TO DEC. 6TH First Friday Tennis Mixer 6:30 to 8:30 P.M. Enjoy food, drinks and music while playing mixed doubles with fellow Carrollwood Country Club Members. NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER Dates TBA 6:30 to 8:30 P.M. There are many clubs and academies with much larger programs that never see even a fraction of the success achieved by these three Carrollwood tennis juniors. Maybe it’s time to reconsider how we train tennis players in our country. Our current athletic culture, as I see it, now mirrors the rest of our culture where everyone wants a “kid’s meal” – a Big Mack, fries, soft drink and a toy all within 3 minutes. Unfortunately, in sports, there is no short cut, no quick fix -- no Big Mack, curly fries and a forehand. In order to achieve greatness, you have to put in the time and learn fundamentals. Fun Fitness with Sports Fitness Legend Pat Etcheberry. As the current Tennis Director at Carrollwood Country Club, I can assure those same fundamentals that developed these highly successful Carrollwood juniors are still being taught here every day. All tennis players willing to put in the work and achieve their full potential are invited. We have a variety of tennis classes for all ages and ability levels waiting for you. Holiday Junior Tennis Party 6:30 P.M. to 8:30 P.M. DEC. 13TH For ages 6 to 18. Come enjoy food, drinks and music while playing singles, doubles and other fun tennis related games. To sign up for any Carrollwood Country Club tennis event or activity, please contact the Tennis and Aquatics Center at 813-961-1381 League Tennis News & Other Happenings BY NOLA SMITH, TENNIS REPRESENTATIVE / CAPTAIN / SUNCOAST LEAGUE Tennis Club Championship Winners November is upon us, and our Leagues are going strong. On the Women's side, our 6.5 combo team, played on Mondays, is just getting started but doing well. Captain, Sharon Saleh reports that she has a great group of ladies and are doing well as teammates in this "new" 6.5 combo league. Our Tuesday Suncoast team has experienced some rainy weather, and makeups are already scheduled for December; so far we have played three matches, and won nine out of a possible 14 our last match. Interbay Wednesday is doing well also. We have a very strong team this year, and hope to "win it all". Captain Carol Cotney reports that we are currently 2 points out of first place. As reported in the last newsletter, we also now have an ALOT league, which is also played on Wednesdays. Too early to report any standings, but Captain Penny Rosenthal asks that you sign up to sub, as they are always needed. Lots of activity on the Men's tennis side of the Net. Carrollwood CC is currently fielding both an 8.5 Combo team as well as a 9.5 Combo team. We are three weeks into the 10 week season. It's a nice combination of Men's skill levels and everyone is getting to know each other's personalities as well as games. Plus, the beer is always cold. The 4.0 Men continue to practice on Tuesday and Thursday nights in preparation for the 2014 USTA leagues, keeping two courts pretty busy when the rains allow us to play. We had a successful Club Doubles Champsionhip in October . We hope to make it even better next year. We hope to have some final standings in the next newsletter; by that time our fall season will have ended, and those results will be available.
