160th Annual Fall Fair - The Great Northern Exhibition
RURAL & URBAN LIFESTYLES COME
TOGETHER AT GNE
The Fair is a non-profit organization incorporated as
The Collingwood Agricultural Society better known as
the Great Northern Exhibition (GNE).
As an Agricultural Society, we are dedicated to the betterment of rural life by the qualitative improvement of
all kinds of livestock, handicrafts, flowers and garden
produce through the nurturing of a spirit of friendly
competition.
By being the area’s show window, we host many displays. We provide a meeting place for urban and rural
alike. Besides being educational for all who attend, we
provide a unique experience for some and offer relief
and a change from everyday life. The Fair provides good
clean fun the whole family can enjoy.
We invite inquiries, constructive suggestions, and
participation from all urban and rural communities. In
addition to the Directors, each section of the fair has
a committee which is composed of many interested
people who are part of the fair.
You, yes you, are a potential committee member or
perhaps even have the interest to become a director.
Be involved, be part of the Great Northern Exhibition.
Please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, at

G.N.E PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
JUNIOR AMBASSADOR’S MESSAGE
On behalf of the Great Northern Exhibition, I would
like to welcome everyone to our 160th Fair. I would
also like to thank all our volunteers who work tirelessly behind the scenes year round as well as the many
volunteers who arrive during fair weekend to pitch in
where needed. Our fair has been going strong for 159
years and it is undoubtedly due to the hard working
volunteers who spend countless hours giving up their
own time to ensure the GNE is a success each year.
This year’s theme, which is very fitting for our 160th
Anniversary is “A Timeless Tradition”. Join us for our
special Opening Ceremonies on Friday night, along
with our very talented youths in the community at the
Youth Talent contest. On Saturday, following behind
the Antique Tractor Parade will be our 160th Anniversary Parade with prizes going to the best period
costumes in the parade. Everyone is welcome to join
the parade.
The GNE is a great place for an entire family to spend
a day or a weekend. Where else can you get all this
for such a great price - Truck Pulls, Tractor Pulls, Lawn
Tractor Races and Demolition Derby; Children’s entertainment, as well as local entertainers; the Sport Dog
Team Show; Youth Talent Competition, Fiddle Contest,
Dog Show, English Riding, Western Riding, Livestock
Show, Miniature Horses, Horse Pulls; a demonstration
stage featuring flower arranging, cooking and sewing
demos and of course, our Chef’s Challenge featuring
local Chefs. In the Ag Building, you’ll see wonderful
displays of artwork, needlework, baked goods, flowers,
vegetables and photography exhibited by children and
adults of all ages from our local communities. Enjoy
the smells and taste of the food vendors with a wide
variety of our “sinful” food as well as some healthy
choices. Take some time to browse through our many
indoor and outdoor vendors booths and meet some
local businesses. And there are always rides, rides and
more rides to complete your day.
Of course the fair would not be a success without our
local sponsors. As you browse through the Prize Book,
take a moment to notice the many sponsors that help
support the fair and next time you see them, thank
them for their contribution.
If you would like to join us as a volunteer just for the
day or sign up to be a longer term volunteer, please do
not hesitate to call the office at (705) 444-0308. Of if
you have any questions about being a volunteer don’t
hesitate to call me at (705) 444-2992. I’m always happy
to tell anyone what a great experience it is to be part
of this wonderful organization.
Check out our website, where we will continually keep
you up to date on any fundraising events we are holding, as well as updates on fair events. www.greatnorthernex.com. Don’t forget to like us on Facebook.
Hello Everyone!
My name is Olivia Walker I am pleased to represent
the Great Northern Exhibition as the 2014/2015 Jr.
Ambassador.
The G.N.E. has been running for 159 years and I am
so pleased to have been selected to be the Jr. Ambassador this year and to represent the pride and
respect that we have for the agricultural heritage in
our rural area.
I have had a great time representing the fair this
year along with my Sr. Ambassador Rebecca Redpath.
Rebecca and I have been very busy touring the area,
taking part in our various duties as Ambassadors and
having a blast doing it. I am so happy to have met
Rebecca and thankful that we have so much in common. Rebecca and her family have been so welcoming and I thank them so much for their kindness!
On the weekend of the GNE there were a lot of
fun events that Rebecca and I took part in. We got
to hand out the ribbons to the competitors at the
livestock shows. We helped out at the very adorable
baby show and we even got to wave our flags and
officially start a truck pull! We were able to choose
our favorite cars at the demolition derby and even
helped serve food to the fairgoers from the food
booth! I had such a great time on fair weekend and
didn’t even realize all the fair had to offer until I
became Jr. Ambassador.
There are lots of other things I have attended as Jr.
Ambassador for the G.N.E. - The Presidents dinner,
The Fashion show, the 4H banquet and also Ontario
Association of Agricultural Societies District 5 meeting where I was able to meet other Ambassadors
from all over the area. It was a lot of fun speaking
in front of a new group of people each time and
letting everyone know how great an honour it is to
represent our area fair.
I would like to thank all of the Ambassador chaperones Maureen McLeod, Jenn McCarl, Melissa Ferguson and Heather Walker who have been so helpful
and have taken me under their wing to guide me
along this amazing journey. These wonderful ladies
have volunteered a lot of time to making the Ambassador program successful and I truly appreciate
all of their efforts! Thank you for making everything
so much fun for me!
Many thanks for the beautiful box of gifts that I
received when I was crowned Jr. Ambassador. The
corsages and bouquet of flowers were amazing!
I would like to thank all of the sponsors of the Ambassador Program:
Collingwood Lodge #54, Collingwood Rotary Club,
Feminine Touch, Saunders Office Pro, Crave Candy Store,
Making Memories Florist, Home Hardware Stayner.
I would really like to encourage other young people
to come out and take part in the Ambassador program at the fair. You will be so amazed how much
From,
Diane Edwards
160th Annual Fall Fair - The Great Northern Exhibition
you will enjoy it. It has been such a great opportunity for me and I have really enjoyed the challenge.
Some people have a really hard time with public
speaking but it really is an amazing way to step out
of your comfort level and take part in a really amazing program.
I can’t wait to see what the next step in my Ambassador journey has to offer!
Warm Regards,
Olivia
SENIOR AMBASSADOR’S MESSAGE
It all started on the Friday night of the 2014 GNE
when I presented my speech to the audience and
judges. Later that night I was crowned Senior Ambassador of the Great Northern Exhibition along
with Olivia Walker, the Junior Ambassador. What an
exciting night! We took photo after photo but eventually made our way around the fairgrounds stopping by the tractor pull and of course, the midway!
On Saturday Olivia made sure we were well represented while I competed in the Western Horse show.
I joined her as soon as I was finished and throughout
the weekend we handed out ribbons, served people
at the Food Booth and made appearances everywhere. I was even lucky enough to compete in the
Antique Tractor Pull!
Even though the fair was over that weekend, our
Page 11
excitement did not end! Over the months to follow
we attended the President’s Dinner, the 4-H Banquet
and the Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies
District 5 meeting. Getting to meet the other ambassadors was very fun. As Christmas rolled around
we took the honour of representing the fair in the
Santa Claus Parades put on by Stayner, Creemore,
Singhampton, Wasaga Beach and Collingwood. Fortunately we were blessed with amazing weather for
every parade.
I am looking forward to the O.A.A.S. convention
coming up in February and competing in the CNE in
August! Having the opportunity to represent our fair
is most rewarding. As the 2008 Junior Ambassador
and now the 2014 Senior Ambassador, it has provided me with an incredible experience.
The knowledge, experiences and friendships I have
made along my journey as Senior Ambassador are
those which I will carry forward in life. I would like to
thank the Fair Board members who give us an amazing fair year after year, the ambassador committee
who have devoted so much time to us, and the community for supporting us along the way! To Olivia and
her family, thanks for being a special part of my fair
family, it was a blast! Good luck to next year’s competitors; this is truly a remarkable experience!

GENERAL INFORMATION RULES & REGULATIONS
1. This body of persons shall be called The Collingwood
Agricultural Society. The purpose of this Society shall
be to stimulate good agricultural practice within the
area and at every opportunity to project the image
of agricultural and rural living to the public in general. Our Mission Statement is “To maintain a home
for the Great Northern Exhibition through Volunteer
Commitment and Community Support”.
2. The fee for membership in the Society shall be
$10.00 per Senior member and $4.00 for Junior (16
years & under) member per annum. This entitles
each member to the following:
a. Admission to the fair for 1 (one) day.
b. The right to exhibit or compete, after payment
of the entry fee, in any or all sections at the annual fair.
3. While the Directors will take every possible precaution to ensure the safety of articles sent to the
exhibition, the owners themselves must take the risk
of exhibiting and should any article be accidentally
damaged, lost or stolen the Directors will render all
the assistance in their power toward its recovery, but
will not make any payment of the value thereof.
4. Any person or exhibitor who shall interfere with the
judges or directors while in discharge of their duties or
who afterwards, on the premises of the Society, uses
any contemptuous language to any of the directors
or judges, in consequence of any award made to him
or them, shall forfeit the rights to any premiums to
which he might otherwise be entitled and may be excluded from exhibiting at the next annual exhibition.
5. The Society will not be responsible for any accident
or injury to persons, animals, vehicles, or other
personal property of, or belonging to those entering the Show Fairgrounds.
6. Intending exhibitors and visitors are requested to
read carefully and consider the following rules and
Regulations governing the Exhibition, which will be
in all cases strictly enforced.
7. All exhibitors and competitors must be members of
the Society.
8. On the first day of the Exhibition, the grounds and
buildings will be open to exhibitors and their assistants for preparation, and all exhibits must be in
their places and ready for judging by the time specified in each section of the prize list.
9. Articles of work which have been exhibited at any
previous Great Northern Exhibition cannot be entered in competition for this year. All exhibits must
be the work of the exhibitor.
10. Tags for entries must be obtained from the Secretary’s office. Each exhibitor will use the membership
number for entries in each and every class.
11. All entries must be accompanied by proper address
including postal code, or the Society will not be
responsible for payment of prize money or issuing
of memberships and passes.
12. Prize winners are requested to cash their cheques
promptly.
13. The Society will not be responsible for the payment
of special prizes. In case of a tie between exhibitors or
competitors for Special Awards of Prizes, the one with
the greatest number of firsts shall be declared winner.
14. The Directors do not hold themselves responsible
for the full amount of prizes offered in this list, but
will, if the funds be not sufficient pay the largest
percentage the funds will allow.
15. At the close of the Exhibition - 5:00 p.m. Sunday,
exhibitors must take charge of their exhibits, and
remove the same as early as possible. Any article or
stand left in the buildings or grounds after this time
will be at the risk of the owner.
NOTE: All exhibits in the Agri-Cultural Building &
Quonset Hut, must remain until 4 p.m., Sunday, or forfeit prize money. However, vehicles are NOT permitted
up to the building until the fair closes at 5:00 p.m.
16. It does not follow that because a prize is offered
for any particular animal or article that it must be
awarded, unless there is proper competition, or unless
the exhibit is really of sufficient merit to warrant the
award being made. The judges are particularly requested to note this fact. The judges are requested to
report to the Secretary’s office immediately upon their
arrival on the grounds. See time for judging in each
section of the Prize List. No person shall be permitted
in the horse or cattle ring during the time of judging
except the judges, the groom, or any other person in
charge of the animals. Any person who shall attempt
to interfere with, or influence the judges while discharging their duties, or who shall at any time on the
premises of the Society use abusive language to any
judge in consequence of any award made by him shall
forfeit the right to any premium which he might otherwise be entitled. Judges are particularly requested
to immediately report any breach of this rule.
17. The Directors are endeavouring to obtain the best
Judges possible and protests against awards will not
be received; all decisions being considered final. Any
exhibitor lodging a protest must make it in writing
and must deliver it, accompanied by a deposit of
$20.00, to the Secretary within one week of the cause
of the protest. The deposit shall be retained by the
said Society if the said protest is not sustained.
18. A fair quantity of straw will be available prior to the
exhibition without charge to exhibitors. Any further
supply required must be purchased or supplied by
the exhibitors themselves.
19. The presentation of any animals in the Horse Ring
may be ordered by the Committee on livestock,
for review purposes, at any time during the exhibition and any exhibitor or attendant refusing to
bring such animals into the ring when so required,
shall forfeit any premiums that may have been
awarded them.

The GNE Sheep and Goat Show gets better every year.
Our mission is to give producers in our community the
chance to get together and show the public what we
do. Whether you’re a commercial producer with a hundred ewes or a hobby farmer with six, you’ll enjoy the
chance to mix with other shepherds, lean on a pen and
talk sheep with your neighbours.
$250 prize for light lamb; $250 prize for heavy lamb;
live Shearing Demonstration; Spinners and Weavers;
Freezer Lamb Promotion.
We try to make it as easy as possible to exhibit sheep.
Our committee sets up the pens and looks after feeding, watering, bedding and security for the entire three
days of the fair. Don’t worry about the condition of
your market lamb. We have a team who will be happy
to spend some time with you, shearing it and getting
it pretty for the big cash prize competition. There’s
always a crowd in the sheep barn, because we put on a
daily programme of sheep shearing, featuring Canada’s
National Shearing Champion, Donny Metheral. And our
local spinners and weavers will be back this year with

In celebration of 100 years of 4-H Clubs and the Boys
and Girls Club, a little research turned up this information: The first Junior Fair classes were in 1938, called
Boys and Girls Club, Calf Clubs, and Homemaking. The
first mention of 4-H was in the 1952 Prize Book for the
4-H Tractor Maintenance Club. In 1954 all the clubs –
Calf, Grain, Swine, and Homemaking - were called 4-H.
From the beginning, there was a class offered in the
inside show for a “Rope halter” made as a club project.
