What is
Jump Canada?
Jump Canada is the committee of Equine Canada
that is responsible for all hunter, hunter equitation and
jumper activities in Canada from the grass roots to the
international level. Jump Canada is governed by a
board of directors, the majority of whom are elected
by the stakeholders in the sport. There are 20 board
members and 14 sub-committees that are responsible
for the operation of Jump Canada with the support of
technical manager, Gill Perkins, who works from the
Equine Canada offices in Ottawa. A complete outline of
the Jump Canada structure and responsibilities can be
found on our website www.jumpcanada.ca.
CORE OBJECTIVES
1.
To develop, build and grow Canada’s hunter/
jumper community at all levels.
2.
To improve the effectiveness of communications to
internal and external audiences.
3.
To promote rider and horse development at an
international level.
4.
To administer and manage the Jump Canada
organization.
5.
To improve and increase funding and sponsorship
base.
Since its inauguration in 1998, Jump Canada has
initiated important national programs, fostered grass
roots development within the provinces, fielded
successful teams at World Championships, Pan
American Games and Olympic Games, and maintained
financial responsibility.
Owners are particularly important to the success of
show jumping in Canada. Through their support of
the athletes and ownership of their horses, owners
make it possible for Canada to field competitive teams
in international events. Their support is paramount
to Canada’s success and, each year, Jump Canada
presents the Owner of the Year Award in recognition of
their invaluable contribution to the sport.
Jump Canada has created a number of other programs
and awards in order to recognize contributions to the
sport and to provide support for participants. The
following are the Jump Canada programs developed
to date. The complete criteria for each program can be
found on the Jump Canada website.

Oakville, Ontario
Birthdate:
September 13, 1980
Hometown:
Hillsburgh, Ontario
Erynn began riding at the age of five with her parents, David and Sandi Ballard, and entered the show ring one year
later. Equally talented in hunter, jumper and equitation, Erynn became only the second Canadian to win the prestigious
ASPCA Maclay National Championship at the 1998 National Horse Show at Madison Square Gardens. The following
year, she and Leacock captured the Individual Gold Medal at the 1999 North American Young Riders’ Championship.
Stepping up to the Grand Prix ranks, Erynn made her Nations’ Cup debut at the 2006 Spruce Meadows “Masters”
tournament, helping Canada to achieve victory for the first time in the event’s history, and was named Equine Canada’s
“Equestrian of the Year” for 2006. In March of 2007, she and Robin Van Roosendael delivered two clear rounds to help
Canada win the Nations’ Cup competition in Wellington, Florida.
Erynn is the professional trainer and coach for her family’s business, Looking
Back Farm. Recognized for her ability to ride all types of horses, Erynn is

Gary Brewster
Birthplace:
London, England
Birthdate:
June 21, 1970
Hometown:
West Vancouver, BC
Gary Brewster is one of Canada’s brightest stars for the future of show jumping. Having worked his way up the ranks,
Gary is now a mainstay at the Grand Prix level, competing throughout Canada and the United States.
Following a successful 2005 season, Gary was named to the 2006 Jump Canada Talent Squad, a means of recognizing
competitors with the potential to become future members of the Canadian Show Jumping Team. He quickly realized
that potential by being named to the 2007 Canadian Team Short List.
At the end of a successful 2006 season, Gary found himself placed fourth, fifth and sixth overall in the Kubota Cup
Western Series with his string of Grand Prix horses. His success in the 2007
Kubota Cup Series looks as though it will continue as he began the season
by placing second place in the $75,000 Kubota Cup Grand Prix at the Royal
Manitoba Winter Fair.

Montreal, Quebec
Birthdate:
December 29, 1971
Hometown:
Mont St. Hilaire, Quebec
Laurie Bucci’s riding career began in 1979 with lessons in Blainville, Quebec. Following a successful hunter career,
Laurie made the switch to jumpers and, riding Pauly, won the World Junior Final held in conjunction with the 1989 World
Cup Final in Tampa, Florida, and the Individual Gold Medal at the 1989 North American Young Riders’ Championship.

field accident. In the spring of 2006, Laurie spent two months training in Germany with Ludger Beerbaum and proudly
represented Canada at such prestigious competitions as CSIO5* La Baule
and CSI4* Hamburg. She closed out the 2006 season by winning the 2006
Canadian Show Jumping Championship riding Quidam’s Ramiro.
Laurie operates South Shore Farm just outside of Montreal. In addition to

Frankie Chesler-Ortiz
Birthplace:
Miami, Florida
Birthdate:
December 20, 1980
Hometown:
Orangeville, Ontario
Born in Miami, Frankie began riding at the age of four and has successfully competed in the western disciplines of barrel
racing and team penning. Her first taste of international jumping success came at the 1997 North American Young
Riders’ Championship where she captured Individual and Team Silver medals with Braveheart.
At the age of 17, partnered with Ravenna Z, Frankie was selected to represent Canada at the 1998 National Horse Show
in New York City, making her the youngest Canadian to ever ride on a Nations’ Cup team. In 2001, she participated in
a Canadian Developing Riders Tour and, in 2004, furthered her European education by spending the season based in
Holland and Belgium. It paid-off with a spot on the Wellington Nations’ Cup Team in 2005 as well as two major Grand
Prix victories in Ottawa and Collingwood. Frankie got the 2007 season off to a strong start by jumping three clear
rounds to place second in the €300,000 ($400,000 US) CN WorldWide Grand
Prix in Wellington, Florida.
Show jumping runs in the family – her parents, Alan and Sherry, were also
show jumping competitors, as is her husband, Juan Ortiz of Venezuela.
Frankie enjoys the support of several sponsors including Finish Line, Ariat,
Bioniche Animal Health, Vettec, Devoucoux, Running Fox, Exhibitor Lab, and

Birthplace:
Venise en Quebec, Quebec
Birthdate:
Hometown:
February 23, 1965 Bromont, Quebec
Mario began riding as a child and, in 1984 at the age of 19, became the first Canadian and the youngest rider to ever win
the World Cup Final, a record he still holds. Later that year at the Los Angeles Olympics, he was involved in a three-way
jump-off for the individual bronze medal, eventually finishing fourth with Aramis.
A two-time Canadian Show Jumping Champion, Mario has represented Canada at every major international event.
While competing at the 1999 World Cup Final, Mario was awarded his World Cup Silver Medal for competing in over 100
World Cup Qualifying competitions. He again represented Canada at the 2000 and 2001 World Cup Finals.
Mario remains an integral member of the Canadian Show Jumping Team. He helped Canada win back-to-back Nations’
Cup titles in 2006 and 2007 in Wellington, Florida, and, in September of
2006, was a member of the Canadian Team that scored its first victory in the
$350,000 BMO Nations’ Cup at Spruce Meadows, Calgary.

Emily George first began riding competitively at the age of eight training with various coaches in Toronto, California and
now Calgary, her home for the past seven years.
At just 21 years of age, Emily joined the Grand Prix ranks riding her Irish-bred gelding, Smart Thinking. During her
rookie year, Emily won the $35,000 Kubota Cup Grand Prix at the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair in Brandon, competing
against numerous Canadian Show Jumping Team members including her own coach, Jonathan Asselin. She closed
out the 2006 season by enjoying a top ten finish in the $60,000 Kubota Cup National Finals held in November during
the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto. Based on her successful year, Emily found herself named to the Canadian
Show Jumping Team Short List.
In addition to her equestrian pursuits, Emily is a third year Geology student
at the University of Calgary. She also volunteers with the Street Esteem
Program, and enjoys spending as much time outdoors as possible, especially
snowboarding.

Ian Millar
Birthplace:
Halifax, Nova Scotia
Birthdate:
January 6, 1947
Hometown:
Perth, Ontario
With eight Olympic starts, Ian Millar has competed in more Olympic Games than any athlete in Canadian history, in any
sport. At age 60, he is still on top of his game and hoping to represent Canada at future Olympic Games.
If Millar’s Olympic record is impressive for longevity, his Pan American Games record is equally so for his medal count.
He has earned eight medals in seven Pan American Games, more than any other show jumper.
In spite of his Olympic and Pan American Games records, it was the World Cup of show jumping where Millar first broke
new ground. In 1988 and ’89, he and his legendary partner, Big Ben, became the first-ever horse and rider combination
to win back-to-back World Cup Finals.
The most decorated equestrian in Canadian history, Millar is a member of the
Order of Canada, was Ontario’s Athlete of the Year in 1989, was inducted into
the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame in 1996, and was awarded an honourary
doctorate by the University of Guelph, Ontario in 2005.

Hyde Moffatt
Birthplace:
Port Hope, Ontario
Birthdate:
June 19, 1979
Hometown:
Brantford, Ontario
Andrew Hyde Moffatt had an unusual introduction to horses. When he was five years old, a girl at school brought in her
horse for show-and-tell and Hyde was hooked!
His top horse is Ting Tin, purchased in Belgium as a six-year-old. Hyde describes Ting Tin as a brave, intelligent
and energetic horse who loves to play with people, but gets bored easily. Starting their Grand Prix career together in
2004, Hyde and Ting Tin have enjoyed top ten finishes at several of the biggest horse shows in Canada including the
Capital Classic Show Jumping Tournament, the Collingwood Horse Show, Tournament of Champions, and the Royal
Agricultural Winter Fair.
When he is not showing in the Grand Prix ring, Hyde competes with several
horses in the Young Horse Development Series including Baron, who was
crowned the 2006 Ontario Six-Year-Old Champion.
In addition to his equestrian pursuits, Hyde also enjoys long distance
running.

Tamie Phillips
Birthplace:
Kamloops, British Columbia
Birthdate:
December 1, 1972
Hometown:
Strathmore, Alberta
Growing up on a ranch in Kamloops, British Columbia, Tamie Phillips started taking formal jumping lessons at the age of
nine and, after successfully showing as a teenager, turned professional on her 18th birthday. Her first taste of national
success came in the mid-90’s when she qualified for the Talent Squad Finals at Toronto’s Royal Horse Show.
In 2004, Tamie moved to Strathmore, Alberta, where she operates Caragana Show Jumpers. A fabulous 2005 season
at Spruce Meadows riding Starlet saw Tamie receive the Chrysler Leading Canadian Rider Award. In 2006, Tamie
was named a Canadian Team alternate for the World Equestrian Games in Aachen, Germany, and, after winning the
$35,000 Kubota Cup Derby in Richmond, BC, riding Lucas, was crowned the Western Canada Kubota Cup Champion
for the second year in a row.
Horses are a way of life for Phillips and her family. Her mother, Merle
Gardner, and her younger sister, Shawna Phillips, operate a horse business
in Williams Lake, British Columbia. Tamie and her mother bred both Lucas
and Starlet, promising indications of what their small breeding program is
capable of producing.

Chris Pratt
Birthplace:
Toronto, Ontario
Birthdate:
April 18, 1969
Hometown:
Belfountain, Ontario
For Chris Pratt, it all began with four goats. After spending his first ten years in the city, Chris moved to a farm north of
Toronto. There were sheep, chickens, goats - everything but horses. Tired of hearing Chris ask for a pony, his father
finally relented, trading four goats for what would become a lifelong commitment for Chris.
The first sign that Chris was destined for greatness came in 1994 when he topped the Kanatek Talent Squad and also
received a Firestone Development Scholarship. Over the past five seasons, Chris has racked up impressive victories
including back-to-back wins in the $125,000 CN Grand Prix and the $60,000 Kubota Cup Grand Prix during the Bromont
International in July of 2006. That same year, Chris made his official Nations’ Cup debut in Wellington, contributing two
clear rounds to help Canada secure victory, and represented Canada at the
2006 World Equestrian Games in Aachen, Germany.
At the beginning of 2007, Chris headed to California to work with U.S.
Equestrian Team member, Richard Spooner, and immediately enjoyed
impressive results such as his win in the $50,000 Grand Prix in Del Mar.
When not riding, Chris can often be found on the golf course.

Kelley Small
Birthplace:
Ottawa, Ontario
Birthdate:
September 6, 1983
Hometown:
Kanata, Ontario
Kelley Small first began riding at the age of ten when she attended a summer riding camp. At 13, she began training
with Canadian Equestrian Team member Jill Henselwood, who coached her to Team Gold and Team Bronze medals as
a member of the Ontario Junior Team at the 2000 and 2001 North American Young Riders’ Championship. In 2004, she
was Canada’s top performer in the Championship division.
One year after winning the $10,000 Talent Squad Phase II Championship class at the 2003 Royal Horse Show, Kelley
made her Grand Prix debut and finished the season tied for third in the Canadian World Cup League standings. In
2005, a successful summer spent at Spruce Meadows gave Kelley Short Listed status with the Canadian Show Jumping
Team for the second consecutive year. She was also asked to join “Team Molson”, a program for aspiring world-class
show jumping athletes. In 2006, Kelley and her top mount, Calibur, won
the $30,000 Hagyard Grand Prix in Kentucky and placed fifth in both the
Canadian Championships and the U.S. Grand Prix League Final.
In April of 2007, Kelley opened her own training and sales business at
Ashland Farm in Ashton, Ontario, where she will also train Ashland Farm’s
young horses.

Birthplace:
Oakville, Ontario
Birthdate:
August 3, 1976
Hometown:
Milton, Ontario
Following a successful junior career, Ainsley Vince was named to the Canadian Equestrian Team in 1995 after enjoying
consistent finishes in several World Cup Qualifiers riding Hocus Pocus.
Ainsley’s top mount is the veteran campaigner, Catch 22, a gelding that she purchased as a six-year-old. The pair made
their international debut riding for Canada at the 1999 Washington International Horse Show before helping Canada win
their second consecutive Bank of Montreal Nations’ Cup at Toronto’s Royal Horse Show.
One of this country’s most successful horse-rider combinations, Ainsley and Catch 22 were back-to-back Canadian
Show Jumping Champions in 2001 and 2002. Ainsley and Catch 22 have
represented Canada at the annual World Cup Final on three occasions, in
2000, 2003 and 2004. Also in 2004, Ainsley and Catch 22 were members of
the winning Canadian Team in the Nations’ Cup in Wellington, Florida.
Ainsley recently opened her own training and sales business on her parents’
farm in Milton, Ontario. Her two younger sisters, Courtney and Sydney, are
also successful show jumping competitors.
