Diabetes: Impacts on
Oral Health
In 2012, nearly 30 million Americans had
diabetes, and the number of diabetics
increases by more than 1.5 million each
year.
Diabetes can have a major impact on oral
health. The American Dental Association
states that one in five cases of tooth loss is
linked to diabetes, in part because of the
increased prevalence of gum disease in
diabetics. Dry mouth is another issue
diabetics deal with as they tend to produce
less saliva. Diabetics are also more prone to
infections of the mouth like thrush, and may
notice longer healing times for mouth
wounds.

How Much Sugar
Should You Intake
Each Day?
The American Heart Association
recommends limiting the amount of
added sugars you consume to no
more than half of your daily
discretionary calorie allowance.
For most American women, this
is about 6 teaspoons of added
sugar per day and no more than 9
teaspoons of added sugar per day
for men. One teaspoon of
granulated sugar
equals 4 grams of sugar.

Atlanta for Continuing Education
Dr. Nuhfer, Karen, Alicia, and Vicki
recently attended a dental seminar in
Atlanta, Georgia. Along with two days
of intense training, they found time to
enjoy a tour of the Coke Museum. Are
those sugar free girls?

Did You Know?
There is someone whose job
includes squeezing Prince
Charles’s toothpaste onto the
royal toothbrush. That someone is
Michael Fawcett, the prince’s
personal valet. Since Fawcett is
the only person Prince Charles
trusts with this awesome
responsibility, one must presume that the heir to the throne’s dental hygiene declines
whenever Fawcett is on vacation.
In observance of the July 4th
