DECISION OF THE WORLD HERITAGE COMMITTEE:
The Committee made no statement.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
In this region of Anatolia, conquered by the Turks at the beginning of the 11th century, Emir
Ahmet Shah founded a mosque in 1228-1229 containing a single prayer room and crowned
by two cupolas, with a hospital adjoining it. A highly elaborate technique of vault
construction, and a creative, imaginative type of decorative sculpture - particularly on the
three doors, in contrast to the unadorned walls of the interior - are the unique features of this
masterpiece of Islamic architecture.
