Installation Instructions
Thank you for purchasing our Honda Grom (MSX125) Complete Stretch Kit. Our kit comes complete with unlike any other no need to purchase any special tools. We highly recommend the kit is installed by a trained motorcycle technician but have written these basic instructions for someone that is mechanically inclined. PLEASE STOP AND READ INSTRUCTIONS ENTIRELY BEFORE STARTING. Tools Required: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 5/16 Allen , 3/8 Allen, 9/16 and 5/8 wrench 10mm, 12mm, 14mm, and 17mm wrench Rubber mallet or section of 2x4 (something soft to tap with) Needle nose pliers Metal burr removal tool Safety glasses Jack or Motorcycle lift. (The motorcycle need to be secure in order to risk it not falling) 1. Disassembly: We realize many customers do not own a lift so a 2 ton jack and some 2x4’s will work. Be sure to have someone hold the front end so the motorcycle does not tip over. You will want to make sure the rear wheel is off the ground and the bike is in neutral gear. TRS is NOT responsible for the motorcycle falling over. Use your best judgment or consult a motorcycle Technician. Next put on safety glasses and let start working. 1 Remove the stock plastic fender/chain guard. Next locate and remove the Master link It will be pink if using OEM chain. Remove link and chain. Use gloves for this as the chain has wax on it and can get dirty. Next, use a 10mm and 12mm wrench and loosen and remove the chain tensioner nuts and plate at the end of the swingarm. 2 It’s time to pull the Rear Axle. The Nut on the Axle is 19mm and the Axle head is 14mm. Loosen and remove axle. You should be able to slide the wheel forward and slide the wheel out, as well as sliding the caliper off the rotor and leaning the caliper over the swingarm. 3 Remove chain tensioners. In our test installation we did not have to de-burr the inside of the swingarm but have depending on your Grom you may have to remove the burrs on the inside of the channel of your swingarm. Grab the TRS Extensions pieces and insert in swingarm. You may have to use a rubber mallet or 2x4 to lightly tap them into position. It is important to know what stretch you want. It’s easy to tap into place but harder to pull back out. Insert the new extensions until you can see two bolt holes through the swingarm slot depending on what length you decide to run. 4 Once both extensions are installed, insert supplied bolts and powder coated double washers. But do not tighten. 5 Provided in the kit is a brake caliper brace. This goes on the left side swingarm. See pic below for install. Do not use Stainless Washer for Caliper mount bolt. Use Nylon Lock nuts to tighten. Barely Crack the Rear banjo Bolt using a 12mm wrench ONLY ENOUGH to let banjo spin. We recommend you still bleed rear brakes but if you are lucky you might get away with no air in system. 6 We removed and flipped the brake line bracket for a clean installation. Now that you have the brake line extended slide the caliper inside the OEM position of the new caliper mount. We then installed the axle to make sure that everything was inline. Use a twist motion if needed to install axle. If everything is lined up tighten bolts but not too tight yet. Remove axle and insert rim and tire making sure rotor goes inside caliper. NOTE: Once caliper is installed check hose to see how close it is to exhaust if too close rotate more to clear exhaust. 7 Tighten axle. 8 Grab the included chain and feed one end through the tunnel over the front sprocket. Reach under bottom and pull chain. Make sure motorcycle is in neutral. Wrap around both front and rear sprocket and depending on your length you will have to use the supplied chain breaker tool to separate the links. Please take into consideration you will be adding a new master link and mark the point you will be removing. Use tool to break chain to desired length. If you do not know how you use tool, YouTube “how to use chain break tool”. Insert NEW supplied master link to connect ends The left side of the OEM swingarm lists the chain tension specs, which you should adhere to. Using the rubber mallet gently tap each side of the axle nuts backward to obtain the desired chain tension. Once desired tension is reached you may now tighten all 4 Nylon nuts. After 200 miles re-adjust your tension as the chain will stretch. Check brakes and bleed if necessary. Unlike other kits, the TRS kits comes with a 3” rear shock lowering link. To install, loosen top shock bolt and remove OEM bottom shock bolt. Move shock out of way install lowering block in place of OEM lower shock mount. See below pic. Use supplied Hardware to re-install bottom shock. Tighten top shock bolt. 9 You do not have to use this. It will level out the bike though. Beware if you do use this you will have to cut your kickstand so Motorcycle has correct lean when on stand. See pic. 10 Make sure all bolts are tight and secure. Included in your GROM TRS Extension kit is as follows: Two Hard Anodized Black extension blocks 4 – Black Powdered Coated Steel Double washers Four (4) stainless steel extension bolts, washers, and nylon nuts. One (1) Hard Anodized Caliper mounting bracket One (1) Black Hard Anodized 3” Rear shock Lowering link with stainless hardware One (1) 142 link TSUBAKI 420 chain (4180 average Tensile Strength) greater than OEM D.I.D. chain. One (1) TSUBAKI 420 Master link One (1) TRS chain breaker tool. Installation Instructions NOTICE: Riding a motorcycle is very dangerous and modifying it is done at your own risk.
