The climate-controlled, state-of-the-artfacility boasts itself as the first drive-thru storage facility in California. The modem, ultra-clean building has security alarms in every storage unit, camera surveillance and an intercom system. Each unit is equipped with fire sprinklers and electricity. Security Public Storage is managed by David Wright and Laura Ballard. They may be contactedat (916) 4211111. On April 15th,SMUD presentedParatransit,Inc., a ceremonial check for $213,400. The check represents the incentives provided by SMUD for the installation of an 85-kilowatt photovoltaic (solar) system on the roof of Paratransit's headquartersbuilding. The solar system is integrated with a single-ply cool roof system which reflects sunlight and helps keep the headquarterscooler. This is the first applicationusing the two technologies in SMUD's service area. The solar system will produce about 127,500kwh per year or enoughto power almost 12 homes. Paratransitis a non-profit community transportationcompany for peoplewith disabilities and the elderly. Paratransitbelieves in being a good community partner and is an environmentally conscious organization, said Mary Steinert, Director of Fleet Maintenance. What's up with Florin Mall? In December 2003, The Sacramento Bee reported that local developer Buzz Oates and at least one other partner purchased the 210,000sf of "inline" stores of the mall. The purchase consolidated Oates' holding in the mall with previous purchasesof -the former JC Penney and Weinstock's buildings. Sears retained ownership of its building and the CordanoCompany retained ownership of the outlying pads. At this point, no firm plans are in place for the mall's future development. Earlier this year, the SacramentoHousing and Redevelopment Agency - with the consent of the Partnership's Board - began the process to place the mall and surrounding area into a redevelopmentarea. Sacramento Mayor Heather Fargo delivered the keynote address.City Councilmember and Partnership Board Member Bonnie Pannell served as emcee. The meeting attracted property and businessowners, local government officials as well ascommunity members. Dr. Paul Vu, owner of the newly openedPacific Rim Plaza, provided keen insight into the explosion of Vietnamesebusinessesalong the StocktonandFlorin Business Corridors. Mauricio Navas (1) & Brad Miller Mauricio Navas, owner of Sac-Town on Stockton Boulevard, was visited recently by Sacramento King's center and perennial all-star Brad Miller. Brad is a regular Sac-Town customer and is shown above waiting for customizing to be completed on his vehicle. Board of Directors But were afraid to ask SHRA and Sacramento County are in the process of declaring the area around Florin Mall a redevelopment area. Q: What is redevelopment? A: This is a processauthorized by California law to assistlocal governments in revitalizing communities. Q: Why is redevelopment important? A: California cannot afford to allow urbanized areasto decline while new development sprawls into undeveloped areas. Q: How does the money part work? A: Incremental property taxes generated within a project area are returned to that area rather than going into the general fund. Q: Will propertyownerspay more? A: Property owners pay their normal assessment.Routine incremental increases in assessmentare dedicated to the redevelopmentarea. Q: Who decides how the money will be spent? A: SHRA decides in conjunction with community groups. Q: Is this a good or bad thing for Florin Road? A: The redevelopment area has been endorsed by the Partnership's Board of Directors who deem it to be a good thing. Q: What types of projects may be addressedby redevelopment? A: Street landscaping, flowers, sidewalks, drainage facilities, streetlighting, business or home improvement loans; buffers created between conflicting land uses, and parks are examples.
