A mysterious opening portrays an owl guarding a forest against wolves and kitsune. This moves into a vivid and wild depiction of the malicious yako (the mischevious trickster). The music then relaxes to depict the zenko, the benevolent kitsune. Eventually, the two compete against each other as the music comes to a riveting conclusion and your percussionists transform into a massive taiko drum ensemble. Incredible sounds for young bands! (4:45) TRACK 18 Randy Brooks Arranged by Chris Sharp Bring the fun of this modern holiday classic to your next winter program! Excerpts from America occur in various forms, first in adrenaline-packed moments, then in a brief moment of solitude and calm. The final burst of energy portrays the daring escape. An incredible portrayal of courage, leadership, sacrifice, and survival against all odds! (4:45) Travis J. Weller This short three-movement work chronicles the epic life of a medieval knight in dramatic fashion. The first movement, A Call for Knights, portrays the sounding trumpets calling forth the knights. The expressive second movement, Courting a Lady, is a delightful opportunity to showcase some chamber music within the full ensemble. Brash and bold fanfares open the third movement, Winning the Joust, as the knight rides to victory atop unrelenting statements for the winds and driving percussion parts. Epic! A seasoned music educator, Mr. Owens is active as a composer, conductor, and clinician throughout the United States. Mr. Owens has written numerous commissioned and published works for middle school and high school concert bands. His music has been programmed at prestigious venues such as the Midwest Clinic and appears on required music lists both nationally and abroad. Brian Balmages is an active composer, conductor, producer, and performer. He received his bachelor’s degree in music from James Madison University and his master’s degree from the University of Miami in Florida. His active schedule of commissions has incorporated groups ranging from elementary schools to professional ensembles, including the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Miami Symphony Orchestra, the University of Miami Wind Ensemble, Dominion Brass, and others. He is retired from his position as senior staff arranger for the U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own.” During his tenure, Hosay wrote arrangements for many well-known recording artists, including Patti LaBelle, Amy Grant, Reba McEntire, and Lee Greenwood. Timothy Loest is a nationally known composer, arranger, and music educator. Mr. Loest is active as a guest conductor and regularly accepts commissions. Weller is an active composer, arranger, educator, and advocate of music education. He has been the director of bands at Mercer Area Middle– Senior High School in Pennsylvania since August of 1995. Travis earned his bachelor’s degree in music education with a concentration in tuba and conducting from Grove City College, and master’s degree in music education from Duquesne University. He is currently pursuing a doctorate in music education at Kent State University. in New York and Florida. In 1983, he received a B.M. degree from Northern Illinois University, and in 1988 an M.M. degree from the University of Miami. In 1991, he continued his studies at the University of Texas at Austin. Mr. Syler has studied composition privately with composers Alfred Reed, Karl Korte, and Pulitzer prizewinner Michael Colgrass. Mr. Syler has been on the music faculty at the University of Texas at San Antonio since 2001, and teaches private composition and courses in American music. Exclusive Composer Erik Morales studied composition at Florida International University, and completed his bachelor’s degree at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Accessible at all levels, his music has a unique melodic and harmonic vocabulary that appeals to audiences nationwide. His published works encompass a large variety of styles and settings, including works for concert, orchestral, jazz, and chamber ensembles. Mr. Morales maintains an active composing and conducting schedule.
