Start the morning with a city tour through the center
of The Hague, the seat of Dutch government and
parliament, the Supreme Court, Council of State and
home to the Royal Family. Home to over 150
international organizations, The Hague City Council
calls its city the “Legal Capital of the World and the
International City of Peace and Justice.” Located in
The Hague are the International Court of Justice and
International Criminal Court.
Stroll the wide streets past 18th century houses
built for diplomats and affluent Dutch families and
the smaller town center streets that date to the
Middle Ages. The tour then explores the historical
Binnenhof, or Inner Court, a complex of buildings
that house the meeting places of both houses of
States General of The Netherlands, as well as the
Ministry of General Affairs and the Office of the
Prime Minster of The Netherlands. The 17th
century north wing is home to the upper house of
Parliament. At the south side of the Binnenhof, the
lower house meets in a chamber in the modern part
of the complex.
Forming the center of the Binnenhof is the twinturreted Ridderzaal (Knights’s Hall), a former castle
of the Earls of Holland. Stained-glass windows
depicting coats of arms of Dutch towns line the
Gothic hall and a roof structure with 59-foot-long
beams gives it the appearance of an upturned ship.
The most important events in Netherland's history
have taken place here, and it continues to sit at the
heart of Dutch politics.
The Ridderzaal and Second Chamber are part of the

DON’T MISS…
THE ANNE FRANK HOUSE
THE HEINEKEN EXPERIENCE
During World War II, Anne Frank hid from Nazi
persecution with her family and four other people in
hidden rooms at the rear of a 17th century canal
house, now known as the Secret Annex. Anne Frank
did not survive the war, but in 1947 her wartime diary
was published. In 1957, the Anne Frank Foundation
was established to protect the property from
developers who wanted to demolish the block.
The Heineken Experience is a historic brewery and
corporate visitor center for the internationally distributed
Dutch pilsner, Heineken beer.
The museum opened in 1960. It preserves the hiding
place, has a permanent exhibition on the life and
times of Anne Frank, and includes an exhibition
space focusing on all forms of persecution and
discrimination.
Group tours are not permitted. Avoid the queue,
which is usually quite long, by purchasing tickets
online in advance. Tickets go on sale exactly two
months in advance for tours taking place between 9
a.m. and 3:30 p.m. They sell out very quickly, so
anyone unable to secure a ticket in advance must
line up between 3:30 and 10 p.m. and purchase a
ticket on site.
Purchase tickets online here.
The industrial facility was built as the first Heineken
brewery in 1867, serving as the company’s primary brewing
facility until 1988 when a more modern, larger facility was
constructed on the outskirts of the city.
