Blues Society of Central Pennsylvania http://www.bscpblues.org October - December 2015 BLUES NEWS From Your President… Time for another newsletter and I’m late as usual….time flying and all that. I know that summer sure flew. It seems like only yesterday. Anyway, the Blues Society of Central PA is rolling right along. We have a show coming up in October with E.G. Kight at River City that you all will really enjoy. Just EG and her guitar. Makes for a wonderful show. You’ll find a flyer about this event in this newsletter issue. Then, come December, our annual Christmas party. This year we were able to get a little band from Chicago that I think you will all enjoy. Some of you may remember them from Fort Hunter a couple of years ago. Nick Moss Band tore it up then, and I’m sure they will set the Hummelstown Fire Hall ablazing come December 6th. Also, we will be holding our annual elections that day. I urge anyone who has the desire and ability (don’t really take much) to serve as President, Vice-President, or Secretary, to please let any Board Member know. (You’ll find the listing of Board Members in this newsletter too.) So, until next year, keep supporting the blues. I was absolutely blown away by the band at each of these shows. Keep your eyes and ears openby forGreg anyHogg return shows to our area and prepare to be amazed. Look for me; I won’t miss a chance to see this great band! Have you ever had a CD that you just couldn’t take out of your CD player ….or get it very far away from it for long? Well, Mingo Fishtrap’s 2014 release “On Time” is currently that CD for me! Who or what is Mingo Fishtrap, you might be thinking. So, I’ll spend a little time typing here on my computer to introduce you to them. Mingo Fishtrap is an 8 piece soul/funk band based out of Austin, TX (the live music capital of the U.S. ). The band was formed in band leader, Roger Blevin’s Jr.’s University of North Texas music dorm room at jam sessions called “Bruce Jams”. Now you might be wondering …. Where did the name Mingo Fishtrap come from?? According to my research, this unusual name came from the two intersecting roads on the outskirts of Denton, TX near where the band began…. Mingo and Fishtrap Roads. Roger Blevins Jr. once told an interviewer that legend has it that the Mingo Fishtrap horn section was baptized by the ghost of Cab Calloway in Lake Mingo but they’ll neither confirm nor deny that. Roger Blevin Jr., lead guitarist and lead singer of the band’s father, Roger Blevin’s Sr. plays bass guitar in Mingo Fishtrap. They are both Texas transplanted native Mississippians, hence the mid-point influence of Memphis soul and New Orleans funk. Roger Sr., having performed for many years in R&B bands and always having R&B and soul music around the home instilled Roger Jr.’s love for the soul/funk sound on the band today. Along with Roger Jr. and Roger Sr., Mingo Fishtrap’s stellar musicians include: Dane Farnsworth, vocals, organ and keyboards … Chip Vayenas, vocals and drums … Mikel Urdy, percussion … Steve Butts, trumpet …Dan Bechdolt, tenor & alto saxophones … and Zol Waterhouse, trombone. “On Time” is Mingo Fishtrap’s 4th CD and was released by Blue Corn Music on June 3rd, 2014. This disc begins with my favorite song, “End Of The World”, a very rhythmic tune with the chorus asking … “If tomorrow never comes, would you love like it’s the end of the world? Quite honestly it is hard for me to pick a favorite song on this CD; I love them all so much. I guess I especially like “End Of The World” because I know it begins this wonderful collection of tunes. Considered one of the few true blues vocalists, Kight has headlined at venues around the globe, and has been involved in fundraising concerts in Germany, Japan and Mexico. Kight has been nominated for the 2015 Blues Music Awards Koko Taylor Award, she landed on the AXS.com list of Top 5 Best Blues Artists of 2014, and her latest album landed on the Blues Bytes 2014 Top 10 Albums list, and the Roots Music Report’s Top 100 Blues Album Chart for 2014. She has also been nominated for two Blues Blast awards, and has six previous BMA nominations, twice for Song of the Year. Many artists have recorded her songs, and she’s had songs on two Grammynominated albums, and on two compilations that maintained Billboard chart positions for over a year. She has also been nominated for two Blues Blast awards, and has six previous BMA nominations, twice for Song of the Year. Many artists have recorded her songs, and she’s had songs on two Grammy-nominated albums, and on two compilations that maintained Billboard chart positions for over a year. She has appeared on NPR’s A Prairie Home Companion, and an original song from her segment was re-broadcast on the Listener’s Choice Program. And her songs have appeared on the Children’s Miracle Network, Nick at Nite, and on ABC Family. Kight’s style transcends musical boundaries. With a rich and velvety voice that’s been called “a cross between Phoebe Snow, Wynonna, and Bonnie Raitt,” and a mastery of the guitar that has her holding her own next to any other player, Kight mesmerizes audiences of all ages. And Taylor Guitars proudly provides her with the tools of her trade. Her previous four albums went to #1 on Sirius XM’s Bluesville. One also charted in the top 10 on Airplay Direct’s Top 50 Blues Albums, and one went to #1 on the Roots Blues Chart. Born and raised in rural Georgia, Kight still lives on the land that’s been in her family for four generations. Her roots go deep, and that comes through in her music. When she’s not touring, Kight loves being out in the country with her pet goats, writing new songs, and taking more pictures to add to her photography portfolio. One of her photographs was recently licensed for the cover of a book about the life and times of Robert Johnson. Kight is grateful to be alive, and to continue making music. A near-death illness a few years back transformed her music into a more positive shade of blue. On her latest album, A NEW DAY, which continues to garner rave reviews, she infuses her “country-flavored southern-fried blues” with a little gospel to create her most inspiring venture to date. Page 10 Authentic In memory of Big Jack Johnson, one of the greatest of the Delta bluesmen on stage with Big Jack: Bob the bass player and I exchange glances the eyes laughing at insider jokes told by the music like when Jack pounds a twelve-bar blues into thirteen or fourteen or ten later I realize I’m laughing at myself---New Jersey’s answer to the Delta blues---for my first reaction: Big Jack played it wrong I imagine saying “Jack I know how important this music is to you and all that--growing up as you did playing the blues--but I have to tell you: you got it wrong” *** and so what makes it different when Jack and I discuss history? I’ve read books about civil rights struggles and been to demonstrations but Jack admonishes “now don’t listen when someone tells you things were bad” and goes on to describe a kind of Golden Age where they had pigs chickens grew enough food for themselves and minded their own business you were sick they sent for the doctor and you didn’t have to pay I think he’s talking about sharecropping his own growing up the 40s 50s *** Page 11 should I say “Jack you’ve got it wrong again”? should I tell him about the lynchings the indignities of those years could it be he’s unaware of all the suffering or does he have his own reasons for not disclosing what I’ve only read about for displaying a view of the past that shocks me---and should I decide what’s real? no I should just stick to my business on stage I will back you up Jack I will swear your testimony tonight is the truth I’ll swear you’re telling it right play the blues Jack ---Dick Lourie from If the Delta Was the Sea, Hanging Loose Press “This poem has been published in If the Delta Was the Sea, Dick Lourie’s book of poems about Clarksdale and the Delta. An audio version is included on his CD of the same name, on which he reads the poems and plays the sax with a blues band.
