Provincetown Art Association and Museum 460 Commercial Street Provincetown, MA 02657 508-487-1750 www.paam.org CONSIGNMENT AUCTION Vintage Provincetown Art Auctioneer: James R. Bakker - Mass. License #154 Auction: Saturday, May 20, 2006 at 7 pm Preview: May 5–20, 2006 Lot 54 Elizabeth O’Neill Verner Welcome! It is a pleasure to have you at our May Consignment Auction as we celebrate our 20th year of offering the best in Early Provincetown Art. We are thrilled to have James Bakker bringing down the hammer once again for an exciting evening of live bidding. This auction highlights a number of very important artists including Milton Avery, Oliver Chaffee, Nancy Maybin Ferguson, Charles W. Hawthorne, Daisy Hughes, Ross Moffett, and George Yater among many others. Of particular interest is Lot 54, an oil painting by Elizabeth O’Neill Verner entitled A Street in Provincetown from 1926. Verner was well known for her street scenes of Charleston and natural habitats of South Carolina’s Lowcountry. The Provincetown painting is in a vernacular that Verner preferred, “narrow streets with pointed shadows making patterns on buildings opposite…” Conservatively valued at $10,000 – 15,000, this rare gem also features a sketch on the reverse side of the painting. The proceeds of this auction directly benefit our exhibitions and educational initiatives. Presenting over 100 programs, lectures, panels and concerts annually, as well as a comprehensive schedule of exhibitions, PAAM is dedicated to serving Cape Cod, the membership and the public. Our next auction is scheduled for Saturday, September 16, 2006 so make sure to mark your calendars. Thank you and have a wonderful evening. The auctioneer reserves the right to reject any bid or raise not commensurate with the value of the lot, to withdraw the lot, or to reoffer the lot in the event of a disputed bid. In all cases, the auctioneer’s decision and record of final sale shall be conclusive. 4. At the conclusion of the bidding, as the gavel falls, the highest bid shall record the final sale. At the call of “sold” by the auctioneer, title to and full risk and responsibility for the lot shall pass to the buyer. 5. All lots are subject to a 5% Massachusetts Sales Tax unless the buyer provides a Massachusetts Sales Tax Exemption Number. 6. All lots are subject to a 15% Buyer’s Premium. 7. Personal checks will be accepted only from buyers known to PAAM. Makers of bad checks will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. 8. DATE ___________ MASS RESALE # _____________________________ SIGNATURE: ________________________________ DATE: ______________________________________ 21 PLUS ONE Provincetown Art Association and Museum ABSENTEE BIDDING Please bid on my behalf at your auction on May 20, 2006 for the following Lot(s) up to the prices indicated on this Absentee Bid Form. These bids are to be executed as cheaply as is permitted by other bids or reserves. PAAM assumes no responsibility for errors or failure to execute these bids. By leaving these bids, I indicate my acceptance of and compliance with the PAAM Conditions of Sale as printed in the Auction Catalog. I will be responsible for the purchase price, buyer’s premium, any applicable state tax and shipping costs on each lot I bid for successfully. PAAM packs and handles purchased lots solely as a courtesy to clients. Charges for this service include labor, materials and postage or freighting and insurance. PAAM is not responsible for the insurance on a lot once the title has been transferred. In no event will PAAM be liable for damage to glass or frames, regardless of cause. PAAM may refuse to execute packing and shipping instructions on items that in their judgment are too fragile or too valuable for delivery by common carrier. Shipments will be made in order of payments received. I understand that the bidding on each lot will open at half of the low estimate. Accepted bidding increments for absentee bids are as follows: $500-1,000, $50; $1,000-3,000, $100; $3,000-5,000, $250; over $5,000, $500. Please note that the bidding may fall against you in the audience when there is active competition for a lot. For instance, if you have left a bid of $1,000 and there is someone in the audience bidding for the same lot, the auctioneer may take a $950 bid from the person representing you. The next bid -- $1,000 -- will fall to the person in the audience. To ensure that you do not lose in this case, you may authorize us to increase your bid by one increment beyond your maximum bid to try to break this “tie” with the audience by checking the appropriate column on this bid form (PLUS ONE). 22 Table of Contents: Artist NAME ..................... lot numbers William (Lucy?)
