PFMA Inc. President’s Report
“2005” – That sounds really good. I hope
that everyone had a very Merry
Christmas and a Happy New Year. I
just know that no one has broken
any of their New Year’s resolutions
as of yet. Hang in there. You have
another eleven months to go.
Several years ago when this organization came to life, one of the main
themes was “What can we do for you?”
That is still the motto of PFMA. With that
in mind, chapter members have worked
hard and long to bring you two Plant Engineering & Maintenance Expos
this spring. The Central Wisconsin Chapter will have its show in March
at the Stoney Creek Inn (Wausau Area). The Milwaukee Chapter will
have its April show again at State Fair Park. These shows are presented
for you. They have some great seminars to further your education and
in some cases issue CEUs to help you maintain certification in your field
of expertise. Likewise, the vendors taking part in the Expos will be bringing you the latest and the best that their industry has to offer. Please
show your appreciation by attending one or both of these expos.
Let’s all put in the effort to turn out for the Expos and let the vendors
know that we are thankful for their support.
Three Common Mistakes To Avoid
With Your Workplace Safety Program
1.
File the program in a fancy binder and put it on the shelf
so it is ready for OSHA inspections.
2.
Assign responsibility for the program to someone who
already has a fulltime job in your organization.
3.
Tell your employees how important it is but don't
provide them with ongoing training or consistent
enforcement.
An Actively Managed Safety Program Is The
Best Way To Avoid Employee Injuries And
Reduce Your Insurance Costs
We have developed a
questionnaire to help
businesses quickly evaluate
the effectiveness of their
current workplace safety
program.

President’s Message
Milwaukee Area Chapter
I would like to wish all of you a healthy and prosperous new year.
In recapping the last year, your Association has made great strides in
becoming the organization that we envisioned three years ago when we
started it.
A. Our membership has grown to 332 members.
B. The Foundation has started a fundraiser at Miller Park with volunteers working in the concession stands. We raised over $5,000 for
the use of the Foundation.
C. We held our first annual Tail Gate Party at Miller Park attended by
100 members, family, and friends.
D. We have applied for membership into the International Association
for Continuing Education (IACET). This will enable us to issue CEU's
for our classes.
E. The Training & Education Committee has set up training classes for
all of the Milwaukee Public School maintenance people.
I want to thank Pat Finger with Langer Roofing for heading up our
Program Committee in 2004. He will be stepping down and Bob Nelson
with Crystal Services will be the new Committee Chairman. Pat
arranged for some very interesting speakers and plant tours for us this
last year - job well done. The rest of the Organization Committee will
remain the same. We meet the first Tuesday of the month at Panos‘ Char
House, 20290 Blue Mound Rd. at 5:30 PM. All members are welcome
to attend.
This year’s Expo should be the best yet. The Expo Committee has been

working hard on all aspects of the show. New for 2005 is the Harley
Raffle. Make sure to check out the new seminars.
I personally am looking forward to 2005 because I have taken a new
position working with the National Association for the Self-Employed. If
any of you members are self-employed, please allow me to show you
how the NASE can benefit you.
Don‘t forget to check out our website. It is constantly being updated
with pictures of earlier events and information (www.pfmainc.com).

President’s Message
Central Wisconsin Chapter
With the dawning of a new year comes our sincerest wish for a healthy
and prosperous 2005. It seems like only yesterday that similar wishes
were extended. So goes the trend in this day and age when everyone is
busier.
One of the difficulties in increasing meeting attendance and membership within our organization among younger prospective members is
the significant amount of time they spend with family activities. There is
no “free time.”
However, can we all consider a challenge to dedicate 3-4 hours per
month learning, growing, promoting and socializing with our friends
and associates within this maintenance profession? This 3-4 hours will
ultimately make your job easier and provide greater opportunity to
improve your position.
Our technical sessions and factory tours have been very good and will
improve if we can count on your participation in the events. Paul
Schlaefer has done an excellent job in scheduling programs (THANKS,
Paul!) and will continue doing so, especially with input from you.
Your Board of Directors for 2005 is as follows. Contact any of them if
you have any questions, suggestions or complaints. Their contact information is in the current PFMA Membership Directory.
Jim Lang - President
Neil Stein - Vice President
Ron Antoniewicz - Secretary
Ron O'Kray - Treasurer
Paul Schlaefer - Program Chairman
Dick Boehmer - At Large
Bob Wroblewski - At Large
Dick Zagrzebski - At Large
The meeting and activity schedule for 2005 is published in this issue of
PFMA Connection. It is also posted at the Calendar of Events section of
the PFMA Website: www.pfmainc.com. Please let us know if you need
a copy of this schedule.
Thanks to all the members and non-members who volunteered their
time and efforts on our 2004 activities. The assistance and preparation
are greatly appreciated.

Marshland Chapter
Hope you had a good Holiday Season! We at Marshland Chapter had
our Christmas party on December 15, 2004 at the Ramada Hotel. It is
always a pleasure to have spouses and guests attend a meeting.
Our election of officers was also slated for the December meeting. We
are very fortunate to have Marshland members that are dedicated to
make our chapter grow.
As I sit here in the cold, wet snowy weather I can’t help thinking of the
warm summer weather in June. These thoughts bring up the PFMA
Educational and Scholastic Foundation, Inc. in conjunction with
Marshland Area Plant & Facilities Maintenance Association's Golf Outing.
This year it will be held at Rock River Hills in Horicon, Wisconsin. We
hope to see a great turn out!
I hope to see you at one of our upcoming meetings. Please check the
website for details. Our meetings are always open to prospective members and members of the other chapters!
Stay warm…..Spring is just around the corner.

Chairperson’s Message
Kent Chapter, PFMA Canada
Our first full year as a recognized chapter of PFMA, Inc has come to an
end. This past year has been very busy for our organization in trying to
accomplish our projected schedule of events. Although we were not
able to accomplish every scheduled event we initially proposed, we have
worked hard to have successful, fun and informative events and I believe
we have accomplished that goal.
Our last technical dinner was held on November 16 and the topic was
Machine Guarding Standards and Pre-Start Health and Safety Reviews
(PSR) for plant machinery. Our presenter was Walter Veugen from
Veugen Integrated Controls, a company that provides solutions for
industry to meet the requirements of PSR Reviews and new Standards.
His presentation covered the requirements of a Pre-Start Health and
Safety Review and touched on the following Canadian Standards
Association publications:
· • CSA Z142-02 Power Press Safeguarding
· • CSA Z432-04 Machinery Safeguarding
· • CSA Z434-03 Robotic System Safeguarding
A Pre-Start Health and Safety Review requires that the machinery being
reviewed meets or exceeds the standards included in, but not limited to,
the documents listed above prior to placing the equipment in production. Some of the standards require compliance, or a schedule to meet
compliance to be completed by the end of 2004. Although the standards and reviews are not new to the industrial and manufacturing community, the Ministry of Labour is rumored to have increased it's manpower to ensure that the updated standards are being adhered to in all
plants. Machinery found not to be in compliance and not having a
schedule to meet compliance can be shut down and locked out by the
Ministry of Labour officials and possible charges laid in cases where
injury has occurred. Over all the presentation was very informative and
well received by those in attendance.
In keeping with our machinery safeguarding theme we invited suppliers
and contractors that supplied solutions to these issues to provide table

top displays for their products and services. Our thanks go to Electrozad
Supply, NCC Electronics, Axiom and Zimmer Controls for their participation and supplying a door prize from each company.
Our last order of business for the dinner was to complete our annual
elections for vacancies on our executive board. Lee Holmes gave a great
speech on what the organization offered and his experience with PFMA
but unfortunately there weren't any new nominations presented for the
board. Our appreciation goes out to Joseph Sebben and Peter Davidson
for agreeing to stay on our executive committee.
Spring EXPO 2005 is well under way and a date is set for April 7, 2005.
We are putting together information packages to be sent out to past
exhibitors and are pooling our databases to locate new exhibitors that
might be interested in attending our event.
We are looking forward to another year of exciting events that we are
currently working on.

to be presented in the new year in making this a successful organization. Thank you all.

NFPA 70E Electrical Safety in the Workplace
This standard addresses those electrical safety requirements for employee workplaces
that are necessary for the practical safeguarding of employees in their pursuit of gainful employment. This standard covers the installation of electric conductors, electric
equipment, signaling and communications conductors and equipment, and raceways
for the following:
1. Public and private premises, including buildings, structures, mobile homes,
recreational vehicles, and floating building
2. Yards, lots, parking lots, carnivals, and industrial substations
3. Installations of conductors and equipment that connect to the supply of electricity
4. Installations used by the electric utility, such as office buildings, warehouses,
garages, machine shops, and recreational buildings that are not an integral part
of a generating plant, substation, or control center.
Anyone that does electrical installation or maintenance or who works on or near
exposed energized electrical conductors or circuit parts in workplaces that are included
in the scope of this standard must comply with this standard.

We all know that there are many people still using bleach to disinfect
various surfaces throughout their buildings. We also know that these
potential customers do not check the mixture. They just make it up
with chlorine and don’t check the label to make sure they have the
right concentration. The reason for checking the concentration is
because chlorine bleach concentrations change over time and, therefore, the older the bottle of concentrated bleach, the less concentrated
it becomes.
But most people do not know that the only company that makes
bleach and has a U.S. EPA Registration number is the Clorox
Company. Clorox has an EPA approved label available that clearly
shows the organisms die product has been tested against. Therefore,
when other bleach manufacturers are asked by a customer if they
could use their product as a disinfectant, legally they would have to
answer NO!
You may ask how then can the Centers for Disease Control state to
use bleach for any and all new bugs that come along? Because they
can, but a manufacturer cannot make a claim to kill the organism until
proven to the U.S. EPA that the product is indeed effective against the
organism through product testing that is submitted to the EPA.
Continue to ask if the customer is using Clorox bleach or another
brand of bleach. If they are using a brand other than Clorox, find out if
they are willing to take a chance on a product that is not being legally
used and may not be as effective as they think it is.
