Garfinkel Fund Lilli Kalmenson *as of 10/26/14 With Gratitude T onight we celebrate the 142nd Anniversary of Riverdale Neighborhood House and pay tribute to our dear friend and community champion, Susan Goldy. Susan has been a force in Riverdale for many decades, helping neighbors settle in to this special corner of the Bronx. Her influence is far and wide, taking on key leadership roles in the New York State Association of Realtors, while also finding the time to be a mentor to teens in RNH’s Youth Internship Program. At long last, we are pleased to report that the construction of the new Community and Teen Center has reached a closing point. Our teens will finally have their Teen Center back and our children will have an indoor play space as the weather turns colder. And soon, the community will learn about new services and programs that will take place in the building. On behalf of the RNH board and our participants we want to thank Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz, Senator Jeffrey Klein, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and former Councilmember Oliver Koppell, for their support, advice and constant encouragement throughout this long-awaited project. We are excited to have the opportunity to expand our services with added funding from the City in support of the Mayor’s initiatives to promote full day Universal Pre-Kindergarten as well as middle school programming. Over 135 students at IN-Tech Academy participate in a menu of activities including STEMbased, hands-on instruction. The UPK provides excellent education for a full school day, while many children from working families remain with us until as late as 6 PM. Not all of the expansion is from City funding; private dollars have allowed the Teen Program to extend its college access programming with Kingsbridge Heights Community Center to include a full-time college guidance staff member as well as a retention specialist to help students strive for college and then complete their studies. Today, more than ever, it is only with the support of you, our donors, that we are able to meet the ever-changing needs of children, families, teens and seniors in the northwest Bronx. With your assistance RNH is well-positioned to meet the needs and challenges of the 21st century. President Executive Director We proudly honor Susan Goldy S usan Goldy established her own Riverdale agency, Susan E. Goldy, Inc. specializing in the sale and rental of residential real estate in 1981, and as of 2011, became the Director of the Susan Goldy Team at Halstead Property. Her company earned high marks in the Riverdale community and well beyond for its integrity, professionalism and reliability and, combined with Halstead Property’s resources and support, she thought it made the perfect union. Susan’s interest in real estate industry issues grew through her involvement with the Bronx Manhattan North Association of Realtors, eventually serving two terms as its President in 1995 and 1996. At the New York State Association of Realtors (NYSAR), Susan chaired many committees which culminated in her being elected to serve as it’s President in 2012. Members of Congress, State and City elected officials often hear from Susan when she is advocating the Realtor’s position on potential or pending legislation affecting consumers and real estate practitioners. Susan has participated on panel discussions, held speaking engagements, been a guest writer for real estate publications, and has appeared on TV on real estate related matters. Susan’s involvement in the growth and vitality of her community and of her borough led her to become a staunch supporter of many institutions in the Bronx. She has served on the board of directors for several organizations. She has been on the Board of Directors of Riverdale Neighborhood House since 2006 and is currently serving as our Treasurer. Susan moved to Riverdale in 1972 and raised her children, Jason & Lauren, who are both attorneys working in New York City. Riverdale Neighborhood House (RNH): A Vital Partner In Our Community F or 142 years, RNH has been an anchor institution in the Northwest Bronx, providing human services to an ever-changing community. Throughout our history, we have worked to improve the quality of life in the neighborhood and to foster respect among our diverse residents. Originally founded as a lending library for neighborhood workers, RNH soon began to provide social services to the area’s residents. Our programs have evolved as needs have changed: in the early 1900’s, RNH advocated for improved sanitary conditions; during World War II emergency nursing training was offered; and since the 1950’s, the agency has provided early childhood education, job training for teens, programs for the elderly, and activities for families. Today, RNH continues to keep the community strong. We have been instrumental in establishing and supporting new partner agencies. Organizations that RNH helped found include The Riverdale Press, Riverdale Senior Services, and the local branch of The New York Public Library. More recently, it has provided meeting space for the Bronx Works Navigator, Riverdale Nature Preservancy, the Bronx Arts Ensemble, Toastmasters and the Girl Scouts. Additionally, RNH continues to host a community supported agriculture program – bringing organically-grown produce, meats, and other products directly from upstate farmers to our Bronx community. We co-sponsor two Youth Markets in Community Board #8, one at RNH and the other through our partnership with Kingsbridge Heights Community Center. Through this exciting program, teenage interns sell farm-fresh goods from a stand at the agency as they learn about business and nutrition. RNH’s support for local children begins well before they enter our Teen Program. The Early Childhood Program is one of only two Riverdale pre-schools accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). We are committed to helping the community’s most needy families through the sliding scale supported by the scholarship fund from our loyal donors. As part of Mayor de Blasio’s efforts to expand UPK, the RNH early childhood program is now a full day UPK provider and all classrooms are now open until 6 PM to meet the needs of working families. The Out of School Time (OST) program at the INTech Academy, now called “COMPASS” and part of the SONYC (School’s Out New York City) effort supported by the Mayor, helped over 135 middle school students reach for academic success. With enhanced support, the program now has a full time Education Specialist on our team. Through a collaborative effort with fellow settlement house Kingsbridge Heights Community Center, RNH is offering college readiness services to the community while bringing our signature career development program, the Youth Internship Program, to youth in the Kingsbridge community. The program is expanding with a fully functioning college guidance space in the new Teen Center. The After-School Program continues to offer outstanding literacy enrichment to our children. We are fortunate to have the support of the three “hill schools” in Riverdale who all commit time and energy working with our children. The Fieldston Ethics Class is committed to its Service Learning program; Riverdale Country School students work as homework buddies; and Horace Mann students run a number of our “clubs”. RNH’s volunteer-driven Telephone Reassurance Program remains a highly effective way of helping keep frail older adults safe and connected to the world outside their home and the numbers served has exploded as a result of the changes in Medicaid; we now have over 100 clients who rely on us. Mrs. A is 96 years of age and a Holocaust survivor; she is a widow and lives with home attendants round the clock. But she enjoys talking with us to feel “understood” and her openness enables RNH to inform the social worker of unmet needs. The expanded Community and Teen Center building is finally complete and teens are already using the space. We are grateful for the generosity of Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz, Senator Jeff Klein, Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and former Councilman Oliver Koppell. A new capital grant from Senator Klein will allow RNH to update its grounds as the new building is completed. The Board of Directors, staff and participants of Riverdale Neighborhood House are thrilled to celebrate past achievements and future successes with our supporters this evening. It is only with your ongoing support that we will continue to flourish. RNH has been a vital part of New York’s thriving nonprofit sector for 142 years. Guided by its core tenet to cultivate a safe space that fosters an inclusive and respectful community, it offers early childhood, prekindergarten, afterschool, summer, teen and senior programs. Whether making daily calls to homebound elderly to ensure their safety and wellbeing, organizing intergenerational activities or encouraging teems to become civically engaged, RNH continues to play a key role in uniting neighbors and uplifting families in the northwest Bronx. As my team and I orchestrate unprecedented expansions of afterschool, prekindergarten, affordable housing and the living wage mandate, I commend RNH’s critical contributions to building a brighter and more equitable future for all New Yorkers. On behalf of the City of New York, congratulations to tonight’s honoree, Susan Goldy. Please accept my best wishes for a wonderful benefit and continued success. Each year, we highlight an outstanding public servant and honoree who deserves special recognition on behalf of their peers. Tonight that person is Susan Goldy, an incredible individual who has endured success throughout her career in the real estate industry. Yet her success is only one facet of her overall professionalism, as she has volunteered her valuable time to advocate on behalf of consumers through her own civic activism as well. Nowhere else is this more noticeable than during her tenure as a Board Member and Treasurer of Riverdale Neighborhood House. Since 1872, the Neighborhood House has been a pillar of community involvement and betterment in the northwest Bronx. As a successful, wellrespected realtor, an established voice on real estate issues in New York State, and member of the Riverdale Neighborhood House Board of Directors, Susan Goldy has also contributed in numerous ways to the vitality of this community. Susan Goldy, a Riverdale resident of over four decades, established her own real estate agency in Riverdale in 1981. Her agency quickly gained a reputation in the community for excellence in the sale and rental of residential units. Ms. Goldy also became a leader on real estate issues in New York State, twice serving as President of the Bronx Manhattan North Association of Realtors and later as President of the New York State Association of Realtors. Susan Goldy is committed to giving back to her community. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Riverdale Neighborhood House and has served on several other civic-minded organizations in the Bronx. She has coordinated volunteer efforts with the New York State Association of Realtors following the tragedies of September 11th and Hurricane Sandy. In recognition of her considerable contributions, Ms. Goldy has been named “Woman of the Year” by the Kingsbridge Riverdale Van Cortlandt Development Corporation and “Bronx Businesswoman of the Year” by the Bronx Historical Society, and has received official recognition from the Bronx Borough President, the New York State Legislature, and the New York City Council. Susan is a long-time friend, and I could not be more pleased that she is receiving this well-deserved honor. Susan Goldy and the Riverdale Neighborhood House have helped enrich the lives of countless Bronxites, young and old, for many years and will undoubtedly do so for many more. The Riverdale Neighborhood House is second to none in the Bronx and I am extraordinarily fortunate to have such a fine organization situated in my district.
