Welcome to the first edition
of the Thorek Memorial Hospital
Medical Staff Quarterly Newsletter.
This publication is a key element in the
process of improving communication
and the partnership between, the
Board, Administration and the
Medical Staff of Thorek Memorial
Hospital.
For the past 18 months, since taking
over as President of the Medical
Staff from the late Dr. Georgoulis,
my primary focus and challenge has
been to improve communication at
all levels. This new publication is just
one more step towards our goal to
constantly improve the environment
for, and satisfaction of, the Medical
Staff of Thorek Memorial Hospital.
I would like to thank everyone
involved in making this first edition
of the Medical Staff Quarterly
Newsletter a reality. I am sure that
Max and Phil Thorek are proud of
what they started and what we have
kept going for more than 100 years.
Sincerely,

Creating a Center of Excellence in Urology
We are pleased to announce that Thorek Memorial Hospital has been developing
a relationship with the Department of Urology at the University of Illinois Medical
Center Chicago - the purpose of which is to create a Center of Excellence in
Urology. This relationship further enables Thorek to offer the most advanced
urological care, with ease of access and convenience.
This association includes an outpatient Urology Clinic at Thorek’s Ambulatory Care
Center. In early July, UIC Urologists Dr. Leslie Deane, Dr. Stewart Lipson and
Dr. Eli Michaels began seeing UIC patients in the hospital’s outpatient clinic. The
Urology Clinic provides preventative, diagnostic, and therapeutic services to patients
living on the north side of Chicago.
In addition to the new outpatient Urology Clinic, Drs. Deane, Lipson and Michaels
will be performing minimally invasive, laparoscopic surgery using Thorek’s new
Cystoscopy Suite and Imaging System, and the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System.
Laparoscopic surgery describes the performance of surgical procedures with the
assistance of a video camera and several thin instruments to treat a full range of
urological problems, such as: prostate cancer, ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction, bladder and kidney cancer, kidney and ureteral stones, etc.
There are many benefits of choosing minimally invasive surgery for the patient, and
these include:
- Less post operative discomfort since the incisions are much smaller
- Quicker recovery times
- Shorter hospital stays
- Earlier return to full activities
- Much smaller scars
- Decreased chance of infection
- There may be less internal scarring when the procedures are performed in
a minimally invasive fashion compared to standard open surgery

New Technology at Thorek
Investing in the
best care for our patients
Digital Mammography
Thorek has recently introduced an advanced digital mammography system within the
Radiology Department. Digital mammography is quickly becoming the standard in
breast imaging. This system is unique in that it takes an electronic image of the breast
and stores it directly in a computer. Images can be viewed on the computer screen
within minutes, and stored and sent electronically.
This creates several benefits for the patient, including:
· Results are seen more quickly, so patients have shorter exam times
· Doctors can electronically manipulate images, resulting in a more accurate diagnosis
· Patient’s experience 40% less radiation than from using a standard film
mammography
· Digital images give better visibility of the breast, particularly in women with dense
breast tissue
Stereotactic Breast Biopsy Table
The Thorek Memorial Hospital Radiology Department is pleased
to announce that we have expanded our health and wellness
services available to women with the addition of the MultiCare
Platinum Stereotactic Breast Biopsy System. This state-of-the-art
system allows breast biopsy to be performed within the Radiology
Department of the hospital, offering an alternative to outpatient
surgical procedures. This table is state-of-the-art and designed to
improve the quality, accuracy, and ease of breast biopsies.
To refer a patient, or to learn more about Thorek’s new Digital Mammography system and
Stereotactic Breast Biopsy Table, please call the Radiology Department at (773) 975-6756.
New Cystoscopy Suite
The hospital has recently remodeled a new state-of-the-art Cystoscopy Suite with
Imaging System. According to Covidien, the “Liebel-Flarsheim™ Imaging System is
a sophisticated digital radiography table specially designed for a variety of urological
procedures. The table, with its dual LCD monitors for enhanced viewing capabilities,
allows the physician to perform both surgical and non-surgical procedures while also
providing filmless images of the patient.”

da Vinci Surgical System
When facing surgery, a patient’s primary
concern is determining which surgeon
and hospital will provide the best chance
for the best possible outcome. Secondly,
patients want a surgical experience that
will be the least disruptive to their everyday life.
Enter the da Vinci Surgical System at
Thorek Memorial Hospital.
In January, Thorek Memorial Hospital
had its first procedure (performed by Dr.
Balakrishna Sundar, Urologist, accom-
panied by Dr. Allen Chernoff, Proctor)
using the new, robotic da Vinci Surgical System. Since then, the hospital has
seen a steady growth in the number of
robotic surgical procedures performed.
through very small incisions, with unmatched precision. The da Vinci Surgical System makes it possible to treat
a broader range of conditions, using a
more patient friendly and minimally invasive approach.
The da Vinci Surgical System is an effective, minimally invasive alternative
to both open surgery and laparoscopy.
This advanced surgical system puts a
surgeon’s hands at the controls of a
state-of-the-art robotic platform and
enables surgeons to perform even the
most complex and delicate procedures
