EPIRUS - METSOVO
4 days (Dates upon request)
Greek Epirus, like the region as a
whole, is rugged and mountainous.
It
is
largely
made
up
of
mountainous ridges, part of the
Dinaric Alps. In the east, the
Pindus Mountains that form the
spine of mainland Greece separate
Epirus
from
Macedonia
and
Thessaly. The winds from the
Ionian Sea offer the region more
rainfall than any other part of
Greece.
Ioannina is the prefecture of the
region. Most areas in Epirus have imposing landscapes of dazzling beauty,
as well as a wide range of fauna and flora. The climate of Epirus is mainly
alpine.
Metsovo is from ancient times a
magnet for all Greeks and visitors
from abroad. The site, landscape
and the area of Metsovo is
characterized
by
a
diverse
topography, which is reflected not
only to the dense, but mainly in
the deeply etched river network.
The
region's
climate
is
characterized by cold to severe
winters, with prolonged and rich
rain (in the spring) and the
summers are relatively warm, with enough rain.
Metsovo, thanks to its particular privileges, has significant commercial,
economic, intellectual and cultural progress. Furthermore, because of its
geographical position, it was a particularly important transport hub,
absolutely necessary for refuelling and rest for the caravans of travellers.
The mountain farming has been, for centuries, a key factor in the
development and lifestyle in the region, while the timber processing is
now the most important wealth-generating resource, and perhaps the
main source of income along with tourism. At the same time, from past
centuries, large increase have the woodwork, textiles and silverwork.
In Metsovo, Milia and Anilio, folk art is one of the main occupations of the
residents. The textile industry has a long tradition. The local textile
created elaborately woven, halim, kelimia, bedding, bocharoskoutia, rugs,
etc., using methods that go back several generations back.

there,
in
the
12th
According to the various historical
testimonies, the abbeys of Meteora
were initially thirty. Only six of
those operate nowadays and
accept a large number of visitors.
In the broader region, however,
exist
a
number
of
smaller,
abandoned monasteries, as well. Most of them were founded in the 14th
century.
The name "Meteora" is Greek for “suspended in the air”, which perfectly
describes the rocks on top of which the monasteries are situated.
Meteora, apart from an important monument of Orthodoxy, are also a
geological phenomenon unique in beauty. The single rocks reach up to
more than 400 metres in height. They have been named as one of the
World’s Heritage Sites by UNESCO.
Meteora, due to their morphology, had offered during the Turkish
occupation an ideal shelter for monasticism which helped to preserve the
cultural monuments and works of post-Byzantine art. In the early 19th
century, many monasteries were plundered by the army of Ali Pasha.
In 1920, stairs and tunnels were carved in the rocks, making the
monasteries accessible only from the nearby plateau, so the traditional
method of communication and supply by ladders, ropes, pulleys and
baskets, was gradually abandoned

land, washed by the waves on every side..."
The Odyssey
''The allure of Crete is extremely powerful. Whoever sets foot on this
island senses a mysterious rejuvenating force surging through his veins,
senses his soul begin to grow''.
Nikos Kazantzakis
From fertile coastal plains to rugged barren mountains, from mellow stone
houses to stark concrete modernity, from bustling capital to sleepy hill
villages, Crete, the largest of the Greek Islands, is an island of contrasts.
Home to around 650,000 people and several million olive trees, the island
remains ever popular with visitors from northern Europe, other parts of
Greece, and indeed, visitors from all over the world. It consists of four
prefectures: Chania, Rethymnon, Heraklion and Lasithi.
Cretan cuisine
In the latest years many mentions have been made about the cretan diet
and the mediterranean diet. Therefore, it is now well known that the
cretan diet is not only aromatic and tasteful, but also extremely healthy.
The food has already taken the right place in the Greek culture, equivalent
to the monumental identity. The most important product, that gave so
much credit to the cretan diet, is the virgin olive oil. The contribution of
the local wine, vegetables, meat, dairy products (feta cheese, gruere) is
also significant.
The modern dietology considers the cretan diet and the cretan way of life
as the reason for long living and good health. Most of the international
researches bring Crete forward as the example of the mediterranean diet.
Since the suggestion that the residents of the island have the lowest
mortality rates internationally and the less heart attacks or cancer
diseases, scientists started searching for the identity of the cretan diet
that gives Cretans all these health privileges. But very soon it was obvious
that it was all about a story well hidden in the past. That means it isn’t a
result of a research by some scientists but a biological experiment that
lasts thousands of years!

town prospered and many elegant buildings were erected including the
impressive Fortezza which acted as defence from marauding pirates.
In Rethymno the charming harbour front is flanked with outdoor cafes and
a restored 13th century lighthouse stands on its breakwater. Looming
above the inner harbour is the Fortezza fortress designed by Pallavicini for
defence against the likes of Barbarossa who sacked the town in 1538.

house and during the summer open-air concerts are hosted here.

Moslem Temples, as well as
numerous castles throughout the
area, prove the existence of Turks

MYCONOS
3 – 4 days (Dates upon request)
An island bathed in perennial
sunlight, with crystal clear waters.
The fame of the island has spread
throughout the world, due to the
large number of visitors, among
whom one can recognize some of
the most famous personalities.
The visitor can start discovering
the beauties of the island, the
picturesque interior and the spotless beaches, by visiting the capital of
Mykonos (Chora). Bars and restaurants, traditional tastes and modern
flavors merge to create the ideal destination.
Since the fifties, Mykonos has always been one of the most popular tourist
islands of the Mediterranean.
Chora, impresses and casts its
spell on the visitor from the first
moment,
with
its
beautiful
position, scale and architecture.
Despite
the
great
tourist
development of the island, it
manages to maintain its cycladic
features and traditional look, like
few other towns.
Its cube-shaped, all white houses
glow in the sunlight, scattered
wisely and orderly in the countless labyrinthine alleys and streets with
whitewashed cobbled pavements. A little further, on a low hill, the
windmills, having stood for centuries, compose a picture of unparalleled
beauty in combination with red
domes and bell towers of the
countless
churches.
In
the
harbour, a small colorful flotilla of
caiques
and
fishing
boats
completes this unique picture with
its vivid colors.
All in all, maintaining the form of
the traditional architecture of the
Cyclades on the modern buildings
ensures a unique feeling of
harmony to the town and interior of Mykonos. Nothing can be compared,
though, to the emotion inspired by the enthralling space of ancient
