Greek Epirus, like the region as a
whole, is rugged and mountainous.
It
is
largely
made
up
of
mountainous ridges, part of the
Dinaric Alps. In the east, the
Pindus Mountains that form the
spine of mainland Greece separate

Thessaly. The winds from the

The mountain farming has been, for centuries, a key factor in the
development and lifestyle in the region, while the timber processing is
now the most important wealth-generating resource, and perhaps the
main source of income along with tourism. At the same time, from past
centuries, large increase have the woodwork, textiles and silverwork.
In Metsovo, Milia and Anilio, folk art is one of the main occupations of the
residents. The textile industry has a long tradition. The local textile
created elaborately woven, halim, kelimia, bedding, bocharoskoutia, rugs,
etc., using methods that go back several generations back.

Syvota, also known as Mourtos, is
a picturesque, coastal village of
the Ionian Sea, only 21 klm – 13
miles away from Igoumenitsa, in
Thesprotia. Syvota is built in an
idyllic landscape surrounded by

bay, islets, crystal-clear waters
and it is a centre of attraction for

Syvota is known since antiquity, as

sea
battle
between
the
Corinthians and the Corcyraeans,

KALAMBAKA - METEORA

The city of Kalambaka is rich with

testimonies, the abbeys of Meteora
were initially thirty. Only six of
those operate nowadays and

The name "Meteora" is Greek for “suspended in the air”, which perfectly
describes the rocks on top of which the monasteries are situated.
Meteora, apart from an important monument of Orthodoxy, are also a
geological phenomenon unique in beauty. The single rocks reach up to
more than 400 metres in height. They have been named as one of the
World’s Heritage Sites by UNESCO.
Meteora, due to their morphology, had offered during the Turkish
occupation an ideal shelter for monasticism which helped to preserve the
cultural monuments and works of post-Byzantine art. In the early 19th
century, many monasteries were plundered by the army of Ali Pasha.
In 1920, stairs and tunnels were carved in the rocks, making the
monasteries accessible only from the nearby plateau, so the traditional
method of communication and supply by ladders, ropes, pulleys and
baskets, was gradually abandoned

Cretan cuisine
In the latest years many mentions have been made about the cretan diet
and the mediterranean diet. Therefore, it is now well known that the
cretan diet is not only aromatic and tasteful, but also extremely healthy.
The food has already taken the right place in the Greek culture, equivalent
to the monumental identity. The most important product, that gave so
much credit to the cretan diet, is the virgin olive oil. The contribution of
the local wine, vegetables, meat, dairy products (feta cheese, gruere) is
also significant.
The modern dietology considers the cretan diet and the cretan way of life
as the reason for long living and good health. Most of the international
researches bring Crete forward as the example of the mediterranean diet.
Since the suggestion that the residents of the island have the lowest
mortality rates internationally and the less heart attacks or cancer
diseases, scientists started searching for the identity of the cretan diet
that gives Cretans all these health privileges. But very soon it was obvious
that it was all about a story well hidden in the past. That means it isn’t a

How to arrive in Crete
There are two ways to get to the
island of Crete in Greece, either by
airplane or by ferry boat. There are
two airports on the island; one is
located near Heraklion town and
the other is located to the west of
the island, called Chania. The main
harbors are located in Heraklion
and Chania. There are also plenty
of airline companies that fly
regularly
to
Crete,
especially
during the season between May
and October.

CHANIA

FRAGKOCASTELLO FORTRESS
Built
by
the
Venetians
in
1371,
Frangokastello is one of the landmarks of
Crete. It is an imposing structure with an
exciting and mysterious story: people
report to have seen the ghosts of fighters
on the beach in some dawns of May.
ELAFONISI
Location: 82 km south west of
Chania Town
Elafonisi is a small islet with exotic
waters. It can be reached by boat
from Paleochora as the road
leading there is rough.
GAVDOS
Gavdos, also called Odysseus' and
Calypso's oasis, is a mythical
virgin island. It has therapeutic
properties; it treats wounded
hearts and souls, reveals new
potentials and awakens unknown
senses. It represents a return to

the nerves and allows an escape

RETHYMNO
Rethymno is the smallest of the three major historical towns of Crete and
there are a number of excellent villas and apartments in this area. It is
situated equidistant from Heraklion and Chania, between which there are
regular buses. This picturesque town boasts numerous old houses and
buildings dating from the Venetian and Turk occupations.
Once the Greco-Roman town of Rithymna, this site was also frequently
occupied by the Minoans. During the 16th century Venetian occupation the
town prospered and many elegant buildings were erected including the
impressive Fortezza which acted as defence from marauding pirates.
In Rethymno the charming harbour front is flanked with outdoor cafes and
a restored 13th century lighthouse stands on its breakwater. Looming
above the inner harbour is the Fortezza fortress designed by Pallavicini for
defence against the likes of Barbarossa who sacked the town in 1538.
Within the mainly intact ramparts lie a mosque, church and governors’
house and during the summer open-air concerts are hosted here.
Rethymnon boasts the longest sandy beach on the island (12 kilometres
in length) on its west side.
