As I was preparing to move to Pocatello, I began looking back at my 10 years of being involved with the Lewiston Chamber, the Clarkston Chamber, and the Lewis Clark Valley Chamber of Commerce. As an Ambassador for both Lewiston and Clarkston, I had the joy of participating in so many incredible events and witnessed so many powerful and uplifting moments here in our wonderful LC Valley, my lifelong home. As a Board Member and Second Vice Chair for Clarkston, I was on the front line during the long overdue and successful merger between the two chambers. And as the Marketing and Events Manager for the Lewis Clark Valley Chamber of Commerce, I have been privileged to even further develop my involvement in our community by facilitating all of the fabulous events that you, as members, have helped us design and see to conclusion. All of that being said, it isn't the events or the committee meetings I am going to miss, it is all of the admirable, awe-inspiring people that I have met and had the opportunity to work with. I have been so blessed to get to know so many of you, and call many of you my friends. Each and every one of you will be missed, but I would be remiss to not point out a few very special folks.Thank you to Curt and Madonna Johnson, and the rest of the crew at Quality Inn, Diana Schuit at Timber Creek Grill Buffet, and Kristin Kemak here at the chamber, you all have taught me so many valuable skills and lessons. Tina Davidson and Mary Lee Frazier, thank you for all of your countless hours helping with every event under the sun! To the Rockin' on the River crew - there is no other way to say it, you guys just ROCK! Thank you to David Carringer at First Christian Church in Clarkston, and Ray Rosch at Interlink, I consider both of you my spiritual leaders! To the rest of the staff here at the chamber, Jill, Mary Ann, Kristina, and Dave - thank you for all of your help, and for putting up with me when things got a little chaotic! To all of the rest of you that I have come to know, I will think of you often and look forward to Waddell & visiting Reed, Inc. whenever 18007 (05/13)I am able. Remember to stop by the office and say hello to Laurel Smith, the new Events and Communications Coordinator, she is going to do a great job!! Waddell & Reed, Inc. 18007 (05/13) Sincerely, Lee Ann Hancock JULY 2013 LEWIS CLARK VALLEY CHAMBER CONNECTION WWW.LCVALLEYCHAMBER.ORG 2 chairman'sthoughts Enhance Your Business I hope that your June turned out to be fun and prosperous! Once again, we have had great turnouts at all chamber events, which means new contacts, fellowship, and networking with other members. Our strength truly comes from our fellow members. As the first half of 2013 comes to a close, I would like to ask you how things are going this year for you? Is your business the same as last year? Is it better? Is it worse? In our membership luncheon this past month, the staff demonstrated ways to enhance and advertise our businesses that are virtually free (included in your membership)! Are you taking advantage of this? These are things that we as business owners and managers have to manage. The chamber staff is always willing to assist and put the wheels in motion, but WE have to let them know which ones we would like to use. Please talk to them, utilize the advertising request form, use those resources that are included in your membership! I know that you WILL see the results in the efforts that you make to advertise in the many options that are available to you to grow and strengthen your business! Tired, anxious, frustrated – maybe a little burned out? TAKE A VACATION! KRISTIN KEMAK President/CEO, Lewis Clark Valley Chamber My family and I just took our first full on, holy-moly, gang buster, awesome vacation. Kip and I did something off the wall crazy, we let Keiran pick our destination. Yes, we put our first big trip in the hands of a six year old boy. He knocked it out of the park! Our adventure was incredibly kid and family friendly, relaxing and fun. Also, it was out of the country so one very tiny, but huge factor in vacation success was that we couldn’t use our cell phones. We couldn’t check email, take or receive calls… nothin’. That’s right, it was all about us, we disconnected from outside stressors and reconnected as a family. I have a tendency, like many, to forget the stress we carry has an impact on our children and their reaction to the environment around them. My son is a pretty chill dude but he does have those moments he cries and I think – seriously? He is crying over that? Guess how many tears he shed on the vacation? Outside of getting stung by a jellyfish he did not cry at all. Why? What was different? He had our undivided attention. Our focus was on each other, at one point during the trip we had the funny realization that none of us knew what day or time it was, and we were good with that. We appreciated the uninterrupted family time. This brings me to a reality check I guess, how much of my daily stress am I unknowingly sharing with my son? What am I going to do differently to minimize sharing my stress? Kip and I agree we need to make sure to take this family time every year and it needs to be a priority. So if you are feeling fried, tired, anxious, frustrated or a little burned out – take a vacation, then, come back to reality refreshed and ready to hit the ground running. Your family and co-workers will appreciate it. committeenews Lewis Clark Young Professionals The group is open to anyone ages 21 – 40. MEMBERS IN ATTENDANCE Mike Bowman-retired NFS, John Rusche-Idaho Legislature, Mike Tatko-Avista, Mike Thomason-SEWEDA, Jerry Klemm-Port of Lewiston, Tony Snodderly – Senator Crapo’s Office, Tom Eier, Belinda Campbell-Port of Clarkston, Jake Uhlenkott-U.S. Senator James Risch’s Office, Scott Carlton – U.S. Representative Labrador’s Office, and Carole Asbury – Clearwater Paper/IWIT. Thanks to all for supporting the committee and your community. GUEST SPEAKER Mike Tatko, Regional Business Manager, Lewis-Clark Region, Avista Utilities mandated by Washington voters in Initiative 937, which was passed in November of 2006. The initiative states utilities with more than 25,000 customers must meet the following annual targets: • 3% of energy used to meet customer demand by Jan. 1, 2012 – Avista is meeting that requirement with upgrades to its hydroelectric dams and by purchasing renewable energy credits. • 9% by Jan. 1, 2016. Avista’s purchase of wind power from First Wind will help it meet the 2016 requirements. • 15% by Jan. 1, 2020. Avista is continuing to plan to meet this requirement. Mike provided additional information in the form of a Quick Reference Guide to energy questions, and an 811 CALL FIRST sticker as a reminder to call first to locate gas lines before you dig. Thanks, Mike, for being one of our information sources for Chamber members on natural resource issues here in the valley. We appreciate your time and support. COMMITTEE ANNOUNCEMENTS AND BUSINESS Committee Forest Tour or Presentation – for the August 20th Meeting The committee appreciates that we are all concerned about the potential for fire again this season. Therefore this subject has received extra attention. Two possible approaches to become more informed are: 1) a tour of forest management areas meeting with managers of those locations to become better informed 2) a dedicated meeting addressing the current status and response plans for forest fires. Tom Eier, Scott Carlton and Mike Bowman (Program Chairman) are working on meeting this member information objective. John Rusche suggested coordinating with our local legislative representatives which was also supported by members. Please respond to this survey through the L-C Valley Chamber office for the August 20th meeting, please select A or B: A) August tour of forest areas with presentation on site of managed areas, fire areas, private forest or B) Dedicated August meeting addressing management plans and fire preparations in our local forests. AVISTA’S ENERGY PORTFOLIO Mike gave a report on Avista’s Energy Portfolio, focusing mainly on the company’s involvement in the Palouse Wind project along Highway 195 near Rosalia. The presentation included a video of various Avista green energy sites including Noxon Rapids dam in Montana, Kettle Falls, Washington Biomass Plant, Coyote Springs in Boardman, Oregon, Colstrip, Montana, and Palouse Wind near Rosalia, Washington, and slides showing various aspects of alternative power generation and some of the challenges of managing these new power sources. Avista has entered into a power purchase agreement with First Wind, the company that developed the Palouse Wind project. The agreement helps Avista meet its renewable resource guidelines as JULY 2013 LEWIS CLARK VALLEY CHAMBER CONNECTION Your quickest response will be most helpful and appreciated!! That's because the cost of leasing space is often one of the biggest numbers on the profit-and-loss statement. The greater the expense, the greater the potential impact on the bottom line. Your goal: rent space for a cost that makes sense in light of your company's projected income. Not an easy task. Here are four pointers to help you avoid serious pitfalls when leasing commercial property. START EARLY At least six months before you plan to move in, begin the selection process. Scout out locations and narrow your choices. Waiting until you're desperate for space may leave you with fewer options. Leasing should not be an impulse purchase. Starting early may also provide opportunities to observe walkby or drive-by traffic, the location's visibility, and the habits of neighboring tenants. It may also provide more time for tracking current spending, which will help you develop a better understanding of the level of lease payments your business can afford to pay. immediately for failure to pay the current month's rent, or may specify a grace period during which you can get caught up. Termination options, security deposits, allowances for leasehold improvements — all should be specified in the contract. SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP. Especially if you're establishing a main office in a new space, it makes sense to hire a real estate attorney or other professional to review the lease terms before signing. An experienced broker may also provide assistance when negotiating lease terms. Careful evaluation and bargaining at the front end may save dollars and avert headaches later on. This article contributed by: COMPARE PROPERTIES. In addition to identifying a property that's located near your client base, comparison shopping can provide negotiating leverage. By obtaining lease proposals from several landlords, you may be able to play one against another and carve out a deal that's especially advantageous to your firm. SWEAT THE DETAILS. Read the lease; then read it again. Pay special attention to the length (term) of the lease, renewal options, and scheduled rent increases. You'll also want to scrutinize clauses describing your responsibility for utilities, maintenance, and upkeep of common areas and systems. The agreement should spell out your options for subleasing and delineate default provisions. For example, the lease may specify that you'll be locked out JULY 2013 LEWIS CLARK VALLEY CHAMBER CONNECTION Su Brown & Associates, PLLC 77 Southway Suite B Lewiston, ID 83501 contact: [email protected] www.subrown.com WWW.LCVALLEYCHAMBER.ORG 17 - Full fitness & weight facility - Indoor mineral pool, steam room & dry sauna - Indoor racquetball / handball courts - Group classes - Personal training - Member locker rooms with Jacuzzi’s - Massage therapy - Child care service available ourvalley Summertime Slim Down Secrets BY MAILI MORRISON Summer days and nights are here, and that means more time outside to enjoy what makes this season so great in Lewiston, Idaho. For some of us, our sun-clocks (aka bikini busters) started ticking just after the new year, for the rest of us the sheer happiness of knowing that we could still hide under those warm layers kept the gym (and the diet) at bay. Slimming down for summer doesn’t have to be a chore. With the right balance of diet, exercise, and rest, a healthy body is just weeks away. The summer is the best time to kick-start your healthy lifestyle, combining both indoor exercise and outdoor activities you’ll soon gain the ability to really sculpt and lay the foundation for a new, healthy, you. “Summer is the best time to join a gym. The longer days allow for more time to get a workout in, the gym is less crowded as families go on vacation, and that creates a perfect atmosphere for those who may be hesitant to start working out,” says Nic Benton of Adcope Athletic Club. 1) Eat a nutritious breakfast. After a long night’s sleep, it is important to refuel. Some ideas for a quick, healthy breakfast include: peanut butter on toasted whole-grain bread, yogurt with fruit, cheese slices on toast, or fruit on cereals. Adcope’s personal trainers can help you design a healthy eating plan that matches your lifestyle and your goals. 2) Set a realistic goal, and track your progress. Having specific goals in mind, like running your first 5k or fitting into your favorite pants, will give you something to motivate you every day, and will help you stick to your routine. Programs can be designed to help you lose weight, add weight or muscle, tone or improve cardio. 3) Don’t think of it as working out. Think of exercising as doing something you enjoy. Many of us hate the word(s) GYM or WORKING OUT, but that’s not an excuse not to work out. “Adcope, a club where you belong.” 4) Aqua Exercise. This means doing something your body hasn’t done in a while. Whether you’re slimming down for summer, or using aqua exercise all year long, our indoor pool can help you achieve that toned and defined look. 5) Get some sleep. Adults need between 7 and 8 hours of sleep per night to function well throughout the day. Also getting too much sleep a night (more than 8 hours) can cause fatigue. Whether it’s just for thirty minutes or an hour, take a cat nap during a massage at Adcope Athletic Club. Adcope Athletic Club is a family-owned, fullservice athletic club, and features Lewiston’s only indoor racquet courts, indoor pool, men’s and women’s locker rooms with private Jacuzzi, child care, massage therapy, group classes and more. www.adcopeathleticclub.com. It’s that time of year again. Book your fishing trip with one of these amazing outfitters. Need gift ideas? Want to thank your employees? A fishing trip would be a great gift…. Uncover the Unknown My husband took this picture of my Jack Russell, Hailey while we were at the beach this spring. Looking at it brings me back to childhood, were I spent untold hours exploring the woods behind my house, looking for anything that was unusual: bugs, old bones, plants, unusual rocks, you name it. I would bring whatever I uncovered home and ask Mom “what is this?” I think she bought our encyclopedia set just to keep me quiet. (Yes folks, encyclopedias – before the internet even existed….did I just age myself??) Looking at this picture whisked me back in time so fast, I actually felt shorter! Needless to say, a print is now hanging in my dining room as a reminder to always stay curious. What I want you to do is sit back for just a moment and think about the last time you felt this curious. I am not just talking about nature, but true curiosity about all things that surround you. At this point in your life, work surrounds you most of the time. Are you still curious as the first day you started your job? When you were a child, everything was new. The world was a mystery. There was something unknown around every corner. As life goes on, we are filled with responsibilities and knowledge. There is a tendency to forget curiosity and just function on automatic pilot. I don’t care if you’re 19 or 91. I for one believe the world has so many secrets and so many wonders that being curious never has to go away! I must admit, that Google sure has made it easier to find answers to most of our questions, but sadly, I think that many of us have forgotten to even ASK the questions in the first place. When was the last time you really felt curious enough to uncover the unknown about your clients? Not about how many units they want to purchase this month, but really ask them… .”Why do you order X units every month?” If you’re curious enough, you may uncover something that may benefit both you and your client. In this example, perhaps you’d discover JULY 2013 LEWIS CLARK VALLEY CHAMBER CONNECTION that the only reason they order 30 widgets per month is because, “They have always ordered 30 widgets per month.” But if you’re curious enough and ask your client the right questions, you may discover a way to help them be more streamline by ordering in advance or maybe even save them money by buying in volume…. etc. Who knows what valuable nugget you might uncover, if only you remembered to be curious and explore all the possibilities! www.riverquestexcursions.com I know the above is a seriously simplified example, but I believe that you get the idea.
