But I am clearly aware of the numerous soccer fans sacrificing their beauty sleep and overloading on caffeine just to survive the wee hours of the morning, to catch the Euro Cup live on TV. Just watching the matches over TV can already have a fully-grown man squeal with delight or grunt in anger, imagine watching the match live in Portugal!!! Jed, our feature photographer of this month, not only watches the matches live, he also gets to rub shoulders with famous footballers, thanks to his interesting job as a professional sports photographer with a London-based agency, Sportbeat Images. Besides sports photography, he also has an extensive collection of images in other varied fields, with particular passion on wildlife. On another exciting note, the winner for last issue’s Photography Contest is Mr Joselito L. Guevarra. His winning entry, ‘The View in My Window’ was artistically taken with a Nikon F65. This caught our judges’ attention amidst many other good submissions. Good equipment does play a substantial role in photography, but the visual manner in which one interacts with the subject, plays a bigger part in getting that captivating shot. ‘Macro Shot’ is the theme for this issue’s Photography Contest. To offer some information and hopefully kick-start your passion in this field, my colleague, Max Sim, has spent some time researching and writing the article ‘World on Macro Photography’. Don’t miss out our Q&A contest on Pg 30, this time we are giving away a CF 512MB Lexar Media Card worth S$200. Have something to share with us? PG 02 PG 03 NEW RELEASES - LENSES NEW PRODUCTS A FAST TELEPHOTO LENS WITH VIBRATION REDUCTION AF-S VR Nikkor 200mm f/2G IF-ED TOKYO - Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce the introduction of a fast telephoto lens with Vibration Reduction developed for use with both Nikon digital and film SLR cameras - the AF-S VR Nikkor 200mm f/2G IF-ED. NEW RELEASES An important addition to the acclaimed range of ED lenses, the AF-S VR Nikkor 200mm f/2G IF-ED is crafted from Super ED glass, which is significantly more resilient than fluorite and offers class-above optical qualities. It also achieves exceptional expressive power through the incorporation of fast f/2.0 capability which effectively allows subjects to be given more emphasis by throwing background elements out of focus - enabling effective portraits free from distracting elements and the adding of impact to smaller parts in expansive scenes. For the ultimate in focusing convenience, a switch located on the bottom of the lens gives swift access to the AF-L function, which allows a desired focus position to be easily preset. The same switch can also be used to access the AF-ON function too, which enables the photographer to achieve more subjective focus with fine manual manipulation. It also activates the handy function that allows the lens to revert back to the preset focus position whenever desired. The fast lens of the AF-S VR Nikkor 200mm f/2G IFED can also be combined with the additional benefit of VR (Vibration Reduction) - an innovation that makes it possible to take quality handheld shots indoors and in dark locations with a reduction in blur equivalent to when shooting at a setting three stops faster. PG 04 Combining Fast f/2.0 Performance With The Precision Of Super ED Glass and Innovative Vibration Reduction. VR performance is further augmented by a VR selection switch, which enables the photographer to choose between two different VR modes to best suit the subject at hand - Normal mode is ideal for most common shooting conditions, panning, and use in combination with a tripod. Active mode, as its name suggests, is better suited to conditions involving more movement, such as when the photographer is shooting from a moving vehicle, for example. When used with Nikon D-SLR cameras, the focal length of the AF-S VR Nikkor 200mm f/2G IF-ED increases by a factor of 1.5. Similarly, picture angle also depends on whether the AF-S VR Nikkor 200mm f/2G IF-ED is used with a 35mm film camera or a Nikon D-SLR. When used with a 35mm film camera, the AF-S VR Nikkor 200mm f/2G IF-ED offers an angle of view of 12˚ 2'. When used with a Nikon DSLR, the lens offers an angle of view of 8˚. PG 05 NEW RELEASES - LENSES [Continue from pg 5] - NEW RELEASES - LENSES AF-S VR Nikkor 200mm f/2G IF-ED Major Features The AF-S VR Nikkor 200mm f/2G IF-ED can also be used in combination with the TC-14EII teleconverter, the new TC-17EII teleconverter and the TC-20EII teleconverter too, which increase focal lengths by a factor of 1.4x, 1.7x and 2.0x respectively. The use of such teleconverters is an ideal way of adding further versatility without the expense and weight of additional lenses. Indeed, just by carrying the AF-S VR Nikkor 200mm f/2G IF-ED and the aforementioned three teleconverters, photographers can gain access to a range of focal lengths that would normally be only possible with four different lenses. • Super ED lens elements for a lower refractive index and reduced dispersion • VR function • Offers choice of Normal mode or Active mode, with three steps of adjustment for each to suit shooting circumstances • Remains effective even when used with a tripod • SWM (Silent Wave Motor) provides exceptionally quiet high-speed autofocusing • M/A switch on the side of the lens speeds switching from manual to automatic modes • AF switch located on lens enables easy selection of settings: • AF-L allows a desired focus position to be preset at will • AF-ON allows fine manual manipulation • Preset Return reverts the lens to the preset focus position • Meniscus protective lens • Supports focusing from as close as 1.9m • Adoption of Eco-Glass AF-S VR NIKKOR 200MM F/2G IF-ED SPECIFICATIONS PG 06 Focal length 200mm Maximum aperture f/2.0 Minimum aperture f/22 Lens construction 13 elements in 9 groups (3x ED glass lens elements, 1x Super ED glass element), 1x meniscus protective glass lens Picture angle 12º 20' (Nikon DX Format: 8˚) Minimum focus range 1.9m (74.8 in./ 6.2 ft.) THE FIRST TELECONVERTER LENS TO OFFER 1.7X PERFORMANCE AF-S TELECONVERTER TC-17EII TOKYO - Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce the introduction of the AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E II - the first teleconverter to offer 1.7x performance. Designed exclusively for use with AF-S and AF-I lenses, the AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E II completes the Nikon lineup of 1.4x, 1.7x, and 2.0x compact teleconverters. With dimensions of just 66 x 31.5mm (2.6 x 1.2 in.) and a weight of only 250g (8.8oz.)(approx.), the AFS Teleconverter TC-17E II allows focal length to be extended by a factor of 1.7 times while retaining a sense of overall comfort in the hand. Many such teleconverters can also have a detrimental effect on the speed of the lens, however the AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E II makes available f-stops only 1.5 stops slower. Compact and lightweight, the AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E II adds further versatility to AF-S and AF-I lenses The AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E II also has the ability to communicate with the signals from most lenses. Furthermore, it supports the convenient Nikon Vibration Reduction (VR) function, has a design that is consistent with the current TC-14EII and TC-20EII, and EcoGlass is also used. Teleconverters are ideal for adding photographic versatility without the high expense of an extra lens. Indeed just by carrying a single lens and a set of teleconverters comprising the TC-14E II, the TC-17E II and the TC-20E II, a photographer can experience a freedom of focal lengths normally only possible with four different lenses. This allows the user to shoot pictures when there’s no SD memory card inserted, or copy shots between the internal memory and SD cards as desired. Tokyo — Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce the introduction of the COOLPIX 4100, a lightweight new digital camera with slim dimensions, 4.0megapixel performance and surprisingly simple operation. Like all other models in the popular COOLPIX series, the E4100 has been designed to make things simple for the user and to allow increased versatility without compromising the fun of the moment. In line with this it features 15 handy Scene modes, four of which offer a Scene Assistance function. These do away with most of the preparation when shooting in common situations, achieving quality results when taking shots that range from sunsets to fireworks, to portraits. Users can also enjoy recording movies with sound, preserving special moments in a much more expressive way. Building on the success and capabilities of the COOLPIX 3200 and featuring the same stylish grip, the COOLPIX 4100 feels comfortable in the hand and makes operation easy through its enhanced Graphic User Interface (GUI), which displays easy-to-see menus on a bright 1.6-in. TFT LCD monitor. Furthermore, all controls are placed on the back of the camera for convenient access. The COOLPIX 4100 even has the advantage of PG 08 With a high-quality 3x optical Zoom-Nikkor lens and 4x digital zoom, the COOLPIX 4100 gives users a high degree of control over the way they compose their shots. The COOLPIX 4100 makes it easy for the user to zoom in close on a single subject or person, zoom out to take group shots, and even use the handy Macro mode which can be used as close as 4cm so that small objects can fill the frame. However you compose, you’ll find the COOLPIX 4100 achieves vibrant colors, faithful contrast, and impressive clarity — all made possible by Nikon’s advanced image processing algorithms. A range of other features make shooting more fun. Five Color options comprising Standard color, Vivid color, Black-and-white, Sepia, and Cyanotype can be used to achieve creative results. A handy AF illumination assist function makes it easier to achieve sharp focus when shooting in poor light. A useful Blur Warning function alerts users of shots compromised by camera shake, giving them the choice to record them or not. The COOLPIX 4100 is also compatible with a wide range of rechargeable and disposable batteries, including alkaline batteries, which are easy to find. There’s even an AC adapter too, which is available as a handy option. are located on the back of the camera, while a larger, clear LCD (1.6-in., 80,000-dot TFT) makes for easy composition and pleasing playback. Achieves satisfying results With 4.0 effective megapixels and a 3x optical ZoomNikkor lens, the COOLPIX 4100 blends high-level clarity with compositional freedom. It also offers the advantage of an AF assist illuminator, which makes it so much easier to obtain sharp focus when shooting subjects in low light. Further convenience With 14.5MB of internal storage memory, the COOLPIX 4100 allows the user to take shots at any time, even when not carrying compatible memory media, and enables the copying of shots between the internal memory and SD cards as desired. It’s also compatible with a wide range of rechargeable and disposable batteries, including alkaline batteries, which can be easily purchased virtually anywhere. Furthermore, a waterproof case is available as an exciting option, allowing users to push the limits of their digital photography by shooting in the rain, in the snow, or when scuba diving to depths of 40m. NIKON COOLPIX 4100 FEATURE HIGHLIGHTS 11 Scene Modes and 4 Scene Assist Modes Exceptionally easy to use With slim dimensions, a surprisingly light weight and the same stylish grip as the popular COOLPIX 3200, the COOLPIX 4100 enables comfortable shooting with a natural feel. The image is also overexposed, as the built in flash does not effectively cut down the flash power to provide a more even exposure. By Max Sim Shutter speed controls how fast the shutter open to expose the image on the image sensor. The duration of the shutter will depend on the lighting condition. With flash, the camera will try to maintain a shutter speed of 1/60 seconds most of the time. This will eventually prevent blurring of the image due to camera shake or from the movement of the object. However if you take a macro shot without flash, the digital camera will automatically adjust the shutter speed to expose the image on the image sensor for a longer period of time. In this slow shutter speed setting, the slightest movement of the camera will cause the image to be blurred. Image 1A: The image shown above is taken with flash at 4cm. Image 1B(Below) is taken without flash. It is correctly expose with no shadow casted on it. To prevent this, our Nikon Coolpix camera comes with a built in Best Shot Selector (BSS) mode. This best shot selector mode will automatically turn off the built in speedlight. The BSS Mode enables you to obtain sharp focus images without the use of flash. The BSS mode works by taking a maximum of 10 images of the same scene. Internally they will compare the images and save only one image with the best quality (Brightness, contrast and sharpness). IMAGE TAKEN WITH BEST SHOT SELECTOR Macro or close up photography is an interesting field. It opens a whole wide range of subject that you can shoot. From close up shots of your collector coins to the wonderful world of nature such as insects and flowers. Macro photography needs not to have the top-notch equipment such as SLR with Macro Lens to accomplish the task. Most of the Coolpix Camera even from the lowest range of Coolpix 2200 has a built in Macro Mode that is capable of taking close up shot of 4cm from the subject. Amazingly the Coolpix 5400 pushes the limit to a Super Macro of 1cm. Even professional camera may not be able to perform that close shot. In this article we will teach you how to make full use PG 14 of your Nikon Coolpix Camera to shoot wonderful Macro shots by providing useful tips. 1. Should I Use Flash When Taking Macro Most of the compact digital camera does not have an advance flash system that is able to cut down the flash power to a minimum value to give a correct exposure. Most of the time, it will over expose the subject. Another problem that can be created when using flash is the casting of shadow due to the positioning of the flash and the lens barrel. For example the image 1A(Right) was taken with Flash using Coolpix 5200. The bottom right hand corner of the image shows a circular shadow. This shadow is casted by Image 1B: The image shown above is taken without flash at 4cm. Taking Macro is recommended without flash especially for reflective object like coins or for our case a pewter ware. 2. How Do I Take Good Macro Without Flash? In the previous section, we mentioned that it is advisable to take macro without flash, however by switching the flash off, it will cause the camera to adjust other aspect of the camera in order to give you a good exposure. Most commonly adjusted setting is the shutter speed. Image 2A : The above image is a macro shot of wordings found in our newsletter. You can see that viewing the “4.0” wordings at full size is sharp. This is with the help of BSS. PG 15 [Continue from pg 15] - MACRO PHOTOGRAPHY [Continue from pg 16] - MACRO PHOTOGRAPHY Sample image taken using COOLPIX 5400 5. Getting The Correct Colors When using external lighting, it may create a color cast on your image. To overcome this issue, we can use the camera to take a White Balance Preset. White Balance Preset is found in all Nikon Digital Camera. It involves using a 18% Grey Card as a subject and using the camera to take a shot of the Grey Card in the lighting condition. This will cause the camera to memorize the cast and offset the color cast accordingly. If 18% gray card is not available (Can be found in Photographic equipment shop), a white piece of paper or anything that is white and found in the same lighting condition can be use as a reference. Therefore the BSS Mode is extremely useful when taking macro without flash. IMAGE TAKEN WITHOUT BEST SHOT SELECTOR Imagine if your object of interest is the inner flowerpollen, by using compact digital in Auto Mode will cause the flower pedal or twits in front of the subject to be in focus instead of the flower’s pollen. Therefore it is useful to manually set the focusing area to the area that you want to focus on. Cameras like Coolpix 8700, 5700, 5400, 5200 and 3700 will enable user to select different focusing area. Sample image taken using COOLPIX 3700 The below image 3A shows the screen capture of Coolpix 5200 in the Manual Focus Area Selection mode. User can selects an area from 99 focus areas manually using the navigator dial. Image 2B: The above image is taken without BSS. A close up look reveals the “4.0” is blur due to slight movement of the camera. Image 3A: The above image shows the screen capture of Coolpix 5200’s Focus Area Selection Mode in action. 3. Getting The Correct Area In Focus Most of the compact digital camera will always focus on the nearest object that is to the lens. Therefore it may not give you the desirable result especially when you are taking a macro shot with different depth like a flower. 4. Using External Lighting If BSS does not work well due to extreme slow shutter speed caused by poor lighting, it is recommended to use external lighting such as a Halogen lamp or even the natural sunlight to help you brighten up your subject. A tripod can be useful to stabilize the shot. PG 16 Sample image taken using COOLPIX 3700 Image 5A: The above image shows the screen capture of Coolpix White Balance Preset in action. Under the White Balance Preset Mode, the LCD Screen will show a live preview screen. Positioned your camera in a way that the live preview screen is filled with the gray card or white area. Navigate down to Measure and confirm the option. This will cause the camera to memorize the colorcast and offset for you accordingly in the same lighting condition. Note : If you happen to move out of that lighting condition, it is advisable to re-preset the white balance or change it to auto to have a more accurate color. You can also make changes to the Brightness, by typing any value above 100 will cause the movie to be brighter and any value below 100 will cause it to become dimmer. 4) Choose the .MOV file to be converted. By Max Sim With the implementation of unlimited movie recording with audio and at 30fps for our latest Coolpix Digital Cameras such as Coolpix 3200, 3700 and 5200, we have received quite a number of enquiries on how to manipulate QuickTime Movie format (.MOV) from our Coolpix Cameras. In this section, we will show you the tools that can be downloaded freely from Internet. Most of the consumers in Singapore are using Microsoft Windows as their operating platform; the video formats that are natively supported by Microsoft are AVI (Audio Video Interleave) and WMV (Windows Media Video). With the recent demand, Microsoft has included support for third party format such as MPEG. However as QuickTime Movie is a Macintosh’s Video format, Windows Media Player will not be able to play back the movie. User will have to download and install QuickTime Movie Player from www.quicktime.com . Similarly, if you wish to edit QuickTime Movie files, you will face lots of restriction to it. Therefore to make editing of the QuickTime Movie Files, you will have to convert the .MOV format to .AVI or .MPG, which Windows can readily accept and allow you to edit. How Do I Convert .Mov To .Avi There is tons of free software that is available on the Internet. You can do a search for “converting MOV to AVI” and it will list out all the application that you PG 18 TV MOVIE MODE 5) Click on “Convert a file” button. 1 Microsoft Video 1 is a compress form thus it will result in a poorer quality.
