The Armstrong Air and Space Museum is one of the nation’s premiere aerospace museums. The museum shares the story of Neil Armstrong and all Ohioans who have defied gravity. The museum opened on July 20, 1972, just the third anniversary of the lunar landing. The museum itself is designed to resemble a futuristic moon base. It is most beautiful when viewed at dusk and night. OUTSTANDING FEATURES The museum features many one-of-a-kind artifacts, including the Gemini VIII spacecraft, Neil Armstrong’s Gemini and Apollo spacesuits, and a lunar sample – the NASA term for a moon rock. The museum is also home to two full-size aircraft, including the very airplane in which Neil Armstrong learned to fly. EXPLORE THE DEEP The museum is designed for the experiential learner. There are seven interactive exhibits, ten audio/visual elements, and three simulators. Visitors can practice landing the lunar module and space shuttle or docking the Gemini capsule, just as Neil Armstrong did in 1966. The 56-foot dome in the center of the museum houses the Astro Theater, a unique venue that allows guests to gaze at the night sky or watch one of the informative movies. There is no additional charge for the simulators or the film. Whether your interest is in American history, aviation, space exploration, or state history, the Armstrong Air and Space Museum offers something for you. This programming makes the Armstrong Museum a popular destination for schools, summer camps, scouts, and adult groups. For more information on our educational tours, visit us at www.armstrongmuseum.org In 2011, the museum received accreditation from the American Association of Museums, the highest national recognition for a museum. Visitors to the museum are greeted by two outdoor displays. These displays are open to the public all year long. F5D SKYLANCER As a test pilot, Neil Armstrong flew this experimental airplane. Only four F5Ds were produced. APOLLO AND GEMINI CAPSULES These replica capsules allow visitors to sit inside a Gemini spacecraft and peer inside an Apollo capsule. SPUTNIK REPLICA In 1957, this satellite launched the Space Race and sent America reeling. Sputnik was the first artificial satellite and showed that the Soviet Union had an early lead in the quest for the moon. ORBIT TABLE The Orbit Table demonstrates to children and adults alike how the moon and artificial satellites maintain orbit around the Earth. AERONCA CHAMPION Neil Armstrong learned to fly in this Aeronca airplane at the Wapakoneta airfield. GEMINI VIII This Gemini capsule was Neil Armstrong’s first spacecraft. He and David Scott conducted the first space rendezvous and docking in 1966. INFINITY ROOM Have you ever imagined what it would look like to be in space, surrounded by an endless sea of stars? The Infinity Room can give you a glimpse of walking in space. GEMINI SPACESUIT While in the Gemini VIII capsule, Neil Armstrong wore this suit for 11 hours until the crew splashed down in the Pacific Ocean. APOLLO SPACESUIT Armstrong’s second spacesuit weighed 190 lbs. on Earth, but would weigh just 32 lbs. on the moon because the moon has 1/6 of Earth’s gravity. RESTROOMS ACCESSIBLE RESTROOMS DRINKING FOUNTAIN CASHIER MOON ROCK Neil Armstrong and the crew of Apollo 11 collected this lunar sample, or moon rock. VENDING MACHINES ASTRO THEATER See the night sky projected inside our unique dome and enjoy a movie chronicling the Eagle’s dramatic descent to the lunar surface. The buildings, which now house a variety of shops and other businesses, represent most major American architectural styles from the period. The Shawnee established Wapakoneta as a council house in the 1780s. The name “Wapakoneta” is derived from the Shawnee language for white cloth, reflecting the community’s neutrality after the Treaty of Greeneville.
