Welcome
Welcome to the Allied Air Forces Memorial and Yorkshire Air Museum (Yorkshire Air Museum).
The Director and Board of Trustees of the Yorkshire Air Museum aim to ensure that all visitors including
people with disabilities should be able to enjoy as much access to information and the buildings as is
reasonably possible and are treated with courtesy and care. Our Access Policy has been developed to
achieve this objective and takes into account the definition of disability and other requirements made
within the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 1995.
The Yorkshire Air Museum is located at Elvington, within the City of York, 6 miles from the City Centre.
The Yorkshire Air Museum consists of a total of 19 public exhibition spaces in a range of restored original
WWll buildings within a 22 acre parkland site on the former RAF Bomber Command Station, adjacent
to the 3.05 km (2 mile) international class runway at Elvington. The exhibitions display artefacts and
pictures ranging from the history of aviation and the allied air forces to the history of strategic bombing, life
of an RAF Station and aircraft restoration.
The Museum has a collection of 45 historic aircraft and 4 cockpits as well as 22 motor vehicles and a
collection of over 27,000 aviation related items. It includes an original wartime Control Tower, a NAAFI
restaurant serving hot food, an outdoor picnic area, an exciting gift shop with unique aviation/military gifts,
two aircraft hangars, flight simulators, a corporate function room, a wildlife walk, engineering workshops
and CAA approved fire service to operate its current 8 live aircraft including multi- engine and gunnery
heavy jet bombers and military strike aircraft for fast taxi runs.
Access to the Control Tower, which is a Grade ll Listed Building, is limited by factors that are physical or
related to Health and Safety or by the need for emergency evacuation.
Admission to the Museum will cost £8 per adult and £4 per child (5 to 15 years) with concessions for
senior citizens and families until 31st March 2016. From 1st April 2016, admission to the Museum will cost
£10 per adult and £5 per child (5 to 15 years). Special rates operate for school parties, military cadets and
groups. Certain special events are charged at different rates. Please check our website under ‘Plan your
visit’ for full current admission prices.
The Museum is open every day with the exception of Christmas Day, 26th December and 1st January.
Opening hours are 10.00am to 5.00pm in Spring/Summer and 10.00am to 4.00pm in Autumn/Winter.
A list of the Museum’s facilities and a full site map are included in the Museum’s Visitor Guide Book
available from the Stewards at the Main Entrance and at the Museum Shop for £1. An additional Site
Map is also located on the side of Building 3. Both maps also identify toilets and emergency assembly
points.
All exhibition displays are accessible from ground level. Dogs are welcome. Wheelchairs are available to
borrow. Toilet facilities are available for use by disabled visitors in the entrance lobby of the NAAFI, and
the Elvington Room.

Main Entrance and ticketing area
The main entrance to the museum is clearly marked with drive through access for cars, bikes and
coaches.
The ticket Admission booth is located on the left hand side as you drive in, marked by a red ‘Stop’ sign.
One of our friendly Stewards will come to greet you and organise your admission tickets. You will be
offered the option to purchase our guidebook for £1.
As the Yorkshire Air Museum is a Registered Charity, visitors who are UK Tax Payers can elect to Gift Aid
their admission. This allows the Museum to claim a valuable 20% of the cost of the admission ticket back
from the Government. Gift Aid is very valuable to us and provides additional support for our many
maintenance projects around the site.
Concessionary rate tickets are available as described below.
Visitors are provided with a receipt which is their ticket. Due to the way we operate Gift Aid, entrance is
valid for 12 months upon proof of ID, except on special events days where pricing rules may vary.
The Stewards can organise a wheelchair if you require one, provided there is one available, and they will
answer any query as to where things are located and how the museum operates. Our Stewards are very
knowledgeable about our site and can advise you on things to see during your visit.
Our opening hours are 10.00 am to 5.00 pm in Spring/Summer and 10.00 am to 4.00 pm in
Autumn/Winter. The lengthy process of closing the Museum exhibits starts 15 minutes before the official
closing time. With that in mind, our last visitor admissions are 1 hour before closing time (That is 4 pm in
Spring/Summer and 3 pm in Autumn/Winter). However, in general, we recommend that you allow at least
3 to 4 hours to visit our site.

The Yorkshire Air Museum site spans over 22 acres and includes 2 aircraft dispersal areas, a WWII

Collections archive building.

The ‘Astra’ Theatre located at the end of Building 9 (Bomber Command) displays short documentary films
on the history of Bomber Command and veteran interviews throughout the day.
There is no set route around the museum and visitors are free to explore as they wish. We recommend a
minimum of 3 to 4 hours to get time to explore the site at ease.
The public exhibit galleries are located indoors, within carpeted buildings except for the Control Tower,
the two aircraft hangars, the billet room and French officers’ mess.
All galleries are accessible by ramp. The only one with restricted access is the first floor of the Control
Tower. Due to its Grade II listing, we cannot build a lift or other access. People with mobility issues who
wish to visit the Control Tower will be advised by the stewards at the entry point to make their intent
known. Arrangements can then be put in place to ensure that assisted access is made available, where
possible and practical, and their presence in this area is logged. The protection of disabled individuals
can then be responded to in the event of need for evacuation or further assistance.
Walking is required between exhibits. The collection of aircraft is spread in two hangars and around the
site depending on weather conditions. In winter, we endeavour to house a large number of our aircraft
inside our hangars, particularly those that are the most vulnerable or those that have winter restoration
planned.
We do our best to strike a balance between protecting the valuable aircraft whilst still making them visible
to winter visitors.
Information about items on display in galleries is provided through labels, wall texts and other contextual
and complementary information. From time to time, temporary exhibitions allow items not normally on
display in the galleries to be shown to the public. This also allows items to be displayed in different
contexts alongside items from other collections.
