Taking Care of Baby
by Teresa Suarez, Publications, Musik-Stadt
Driving home from my girlfriend’s one evening, I was relying on body memory to drive, letting my unconscious make
all turns, stops and forward movement. I was preoccupied
with a pair of Stella McCartney boots I had just seen for
sale. I was trying to figure out a justification I could live
with for spending $1600 on a pair of boots.
About a quarter mile
from home, I “remembered” that I was behind
the wheel of my 2001
Boxster and probably
should be paying more
attention to the driving.
So I looked up at my rearview mirror and my first
thought about what I saw
there was, “When did that
fog roll in? Why is it only
behind me?”
Yeah. That wasn’t fog I
was seeing. It was burning oil coming from my car, my
baby!
The Boxster made it to the driveway before dying on me.
But she wasn’t about to start up again.
Needless to say, the $1600 Stella McCartney’s would have
to wait.
The next morning, I called a tow service - ????. The owner
came to tow the car personally, wanting to make sure that
the correct procedure was done in towing my baby. I highly
recommend ????. It wasn’t expensive and you get tailored,
experienced service.
Well I dropped off the Boxster at Porsche of Nashville.
Todd Harville, the Porsche Service Advisor, took good care
of my baby. Todd is quite a customer service rep. I’m pretty
hard on service personnel, especially when I’m not happy
about the situation. But Todd has the skill of listening to
not very happy customers and not being dismissive of them.
He understood my rising irritation at having to bring in my
car three times in the last six weeks, for one thing after another. I felt like I was in a House episode. One diagnosis
after another. But he listened to my concerns and worked
with me on them so that I felt like he took me seriously and
really did appreciate situation. Todd and Porsche Techni-
October 2009
cian, Benjamin Proctor explained to me what each failure
and malfunction was and how it happened. I had no idea
what they were talking about but it was nice of them to treat
me as if I did. There’s nothing worse than being made to
feel like an idiot.
What was the final diagnosis?
Oil Tank Separator failure. Causing oil to get into the engine. And something about engine pressue. Plugs were replaced. But then several days later oil would begin to leak.
So back into Porsche of Nashville. Well the first problem
then caused something to happen with the Rear Main Seal.
After the second visit, it looked like everything from this
initial problem with the oil tank separator was now fixed
and done with.
About ten days later, the check engine light came on.
#&$*@!
Air Flow Meter wasn’t working correcly. So it was back to
Enterprise Rent A Car for me.
Two months, three visits to PON service and my entire shoe
allowance for the rest of the year, has finally gotten the
dreaded “check engine” light gone and stayed gone.
Is it time to trade in? Or trade up? It would have to be another Porsche, because frankly I’m too spoiled for it to be
a Honda or Toyota. I just don’t like the way the 911 drives
and the Cayman is a hard top. If I got another Boxster,
I’d feel like I was cheating on my first love - the first car I
bought for myself.
115, 000 miles and several repairs later, my Boxster still feels
like it did when I first bought her. I have dings, scratches,
curb rash and various other marks on her body. But that’s
ok. I think of them as scars
gained from fighting off all those
Corvettes, Mustangs, G35’s and
po-po challengers. As well as
evidence of those moments of
flying through the world at 130
mph in a car that can rise to the
occassion quite remarkably for
being 8 years old.
Ahhhh! This is the life!
Even without the boots.

THE NEW PORSCHE PANAMERA
PREVIEW NIGHT
by Mike Gillespie, Dealer Liason,
Musik-Stadt
The Musik Stadt Region Porsche Club was treated to an
exclusive introduction to the new Panamera on Wednesday
night October 14th; this was before the public introduction
of the car. There has been much hype about the new Panamera, it styling, appearance and styling, and we got to
experience it first hand. It was a very nice evening with the
introduction done by the staff at Porsche of Nashville and
food and beverage provided by the dealership.
We were especially excited to have one of our clubs racing
celebrity’s with us that night; the 2009 Indy Racing Leagues
Champion Dario Franchitti. (see picture below) In the picture, Club member Rick Arnemann and Dario are talking
about exterior style of the Panamera.
A special thanks goes out to James Corlew, Anita Leonard
and the staff at Porsche of Nashville for hosting such a great
event for our club.

The Car
The Panamera was designed to be a pure, unadulterated
sports car. The Panamera S achieves 0-60 mph in 5.2 seconds, the Panamera 4S reaches 60 mph in 4.8 seconds and
the Panamera Turbo reaches 60 mph in 4.0 seconds. Aside
from pure power, the Panamera is the height of sports car
technology. Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) provides more
power with less fuel. Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) gives
lightening fast, smooth shifts. And new Auto Start Stop
saves fuel by turning off the engine when idle.

Automotive Art
As some of you may know, I truly enjoy collecting
automotive art. Those who have been to my garage can
attest to that. My problem is that I have more art than I
have wall space, yet that does not stop me from
collecting more. Being able to draw, paint, etc is a talent
that I wished I possessed. I have been told I print nice. I
guess that is my one talent and that was learned many
years ago in engineering school. Thankfully, there are
people who are out that that possess this wonderful
talent and I thought I would share with you a few folks
that I have found.
Jim also can do Textile designs for event t-shirts.
Jim Pfeffer
Jim is an local artist
who loves anything
to do with
automotive design,
illustration, fine art,
models,
memorabilia,
preservation and
just hanging out
with people with a
shared interest. Jim
likes the idea, "to show how the automobile has
influenced the American way of life," which can be seen
in many of the watercolor projects that he has done.
Many of his projects are centered on the early
Thunderbird; Jim drives a 1956, as a result of an
undying love for the little Fords from an early age prior to
college on to present day. Jim lives in Smyrna,
Tennessee He is a member of the Tennessee Water
Color Society and other art groups, several antique
automobile clubs and restore his Thunderbird as an
ongoing project since 1987.
Jim can also do commission work if you would like to
have a fine art drawing of you and your favorite car. For
further information on Jim Pfeffer, go to his web site at
Randy Owens
If you travel to the races, you may have seen the Randy
Owens Original exhibit of original serigraphs and
lithographs. In 1978, Owens was introduced to auto
racing. Drawn to the vibrant color, clean form and crisp
edges if serigraphy, Randy - self taught - began making
serigraphs (silkscreens) of motor racing subjects.
Randy Owens has established a strong place on the
American racing art scene, having published over 200
handmade serigraph editions. His realistic style is
modern and evolutionary. Color and motion are the
central theme.
Jim’s artwork includes water colors, airbrush fine art,
airbrush illustration, pen’n Ink and digital illustration.
Randy Owens is best known for his original hand printed
serigraphs of contemporary racing scenes and color line
of race wear, as well as his lively graphic designs on the
Scandia Motorsports racing art cars.
International, Mid-Ohio, The 12 Hours Of Sebring,
Newman-Haas Racing, and Autoweek.
He uses acrylics for his racing artwork, and also
watercolors and ink on the cartoons.
Over the years, Owens has staged over 150 exhibitions
of his work in five countries, including a 10 year
retrospective show at the famous l'art et l'automobile
gallery in New York City, and major exhibitions at Axis
galleries in Tokyo, and at the National Automobile
Museum in Reno, NV. He continues to travel and show
his newest works at the races.
In recent years, Randy has done the event posters for all
of the Indianapolis Formula One Races and has done a
number of works related to motorcycle racing. One that I
purchase in September was the event poster for the
Indianapolis Moto GP (see picture below, the print I
purchased is between us)
Growing up, Roger was always
a race fan and drew cars
all the time, and he supposed
he never outgrew that artistic
interest in motorsports
subjects. There are so many
interesting challenges in
putting a scene together that
captures a specific moment in
a race that he really enjoys. He
likes to work from his own photo
reference of the cars and the
tracks whenever possible for accuracy. Then he
composes his own particular viewpoint for the scene,
first through thumbnail sketches before refining them into
the finished acrylic painting.
Some of these original paintings are for sale, and many
are available as limited edition prints available through
selected automotive art galleries. If you have any
questions or if you might be interested in commissioning
an original painting, please contact him at:
[email protected]
For more information go to the Randy Owens web site at
http://www.randyowens.com
Roger Warrick
Roger resides in Indianapolis, just a comfortable 30minute hike from Turn 4 of the Greatest Race Course In
The World! His motorsports clients include: Paul Oxman
Publishing, Grassroots Motorsports, Watkins Glen
For more information, go to www.rogerwarrick.com
Steven Petrosky
Some of the interesting things that Steven does is his
series of technical drawings.
Steve Petrosky has a large body of great automotive and
racing artwork. I met Steven and have seen him
subsequently at the many Petit LeMans races I have
been to over the years.
Steven’s work encompasses many forms of racing and
many specific marques. Many of the prints are done in a
giclee prints. Many of his pieces are very affordable,
costing from $30 to $100.
The other really cool thing that Steve does is customized
side view technical drawings of your car. Factory
standard features and options are done at the starting
price of $40.00 .Aftermarket details are done at
additional cost and will be quoted before project is
started. Race cars, due to more elaborate appearances
start at $95.00. A four (4) line title block showing year
make and model of vehicle, owners name or serial
numbers are included. Whether you owned one, have
one or dream of one, we can do your car!

Other Places to find Art
Art has been an expression for Keith Upshaw since early
childhood. Although he would occasionally draw different
subjects, his ultimate focus has always been automotive
art. Growing up in rural Alabama, Keith continued to
draw cars as he explored a variety of mediums to
enhance his skills. While in high school, his work gained
commissions from show car owners and racecar
builders. After placing in various art shows and contests,
he enrolled at the Art Institute of Atlanta where he
achieved a degree in graphic design, which resulted in
his working with various illustrations and design firms.
The Motorsports Collector
There are a number of great places to look for
automotive art. One place I have used for years is the
Motorsports Collector.
The Motorsports Collector has artwork, posters, diecast
cars, books, DVDs and much more. To find out more, go
to http://www.motorsportcollector.com .
Owen Art Studios
As a true exotic car enthusiast and race fan, its no
surprise that Keith has a passion for painting cars. Many
of his paintings may tell a story, or incorporate pleasant
scenes that accommodate the cars. “I want the viewer to
appreciate and enjoy the design and excitement that a
automobile can possess through my art.” Keith currently
resides in Atlanta, Georgia.
