MAINTAINING YOUR HOME AND WORK PCs
AND IMPROVING PERFORMANCE
Presented by Michael Stenger
This presentation will teach you all the basics, including the main factors that affect
your PCs performance, safety tips to guide you to a virus-free and spyware-free PC
and how to get the most out of social networking sites while maintaining your
privacy. The topics will be addressed in a non-technical manner, with just enough
background to allow you to understand what they mean and how they affect your
PCs. Along the way, you'll be given recommendations for the best free software and
some great tips for keeping your PCs running at their best.
Michael Stenger is a partner and the Director of Technical Services for AtlanticIT.net, the IT department for scores of companies across Pennsylvania, New Jersey

President’s Letter
Marilyn Cafone, CHAE
Dear Chapter Members,
I hope everyone had a happy and healthy holiday season. It was certainly a pleasure
to see so many people at the two holiday parties this year. We have plenty of pictures
in this month’s newsletter from both the joint NJCMA/HFTP holiday party at White
Beeches Golf and Country Club and our own holiday party at the Westminster Hotel.
It’s been a long time since we held our own party and I am happy to say we had
approximately 40 people attend and a good time was had by all. Thank you to
everyone who pitched in to help especially Janet for our little party
favors and Wendy for the yummy cookies.

June 16th
Of course there has been more than just parties going on over the last two months!
On January 20th we were treated to a wonderful educational session at the Raritan
Valley Country Club. Our guest speakers from Hilltop Community Bank gave us
an overview of what has transpired in the banking industry over the past few months
and what to expect in the future. The second part of the meeting focused on personal
finance and the importance of a good credit score including what actually goes into
that mysterious number. Afterwards we enjoyed a terrific dinner prepared by the
excellent culinary team from Raritan Valley. Thank you to Judy and her team for an
all around wonderful evening.
Over the past few weeks a few things have been brought to my attention that I would
like to mention. The first being in regard to RSVP’s for our educational sessions and
social events. As anyone who has hosted a meeting in the past is aware, it is critical
to know how many members will be attending in order to adequately prepare. It
seems we have gotten a little lax in adhering to RSVP deadlines. Please help our
speakers and our host controllers by making sure you get your RSVP in before the
deadline each month. This month Raritan Valley gave a small gift to the first person
who responded. Congratulations to Kathie Brennan. So, you see you never know
what may happen if you’re the first!
The second item is regarding membership surveys. Certainly having such a great
network of people to share ideas with is one of the best benefits of being a member
of HFTP and our chapter. It’s no surprise that we all at times are interested in getting
opinions of fellow members on different topics. On a technical note though, it
would be appreciated if when sending out an email to multiple members you put the
addresses in as a “bcc” instead of in the “to” field. Then, when someone replies, it
only goes to the person who sent the original email. Some members would prefer to
not have their email address available to everyone and we should try to respect this
whenever possible. This will also limit emails that may not apply to everyone from
popping up in their inbox every time someone replies to all. As always, the survey
taker is more than welcome to compile the results and forward them on to anyone
who replied to their question as a courtesy.
Please make sure you read through the rest of this months newsletter as we have
many exciting things coming up in the next few months including a joint meeting
with the Greater Philadelphia Chapter, a presentation by Charles Dorn in April, our
annual charity golf outing, the Valerie Fund walkathon and many others.
Stay warm and see you in March.

January 20, 2010 Meeting at Raritan Valley Country Club
What are the Odds?
George Klopacs
Our speaker for the January meeting, Mort O’Shea and I
grew up in the same neighborhood, Richmond Hill Queens.
We attended the same grammar school St. Benedict Joseph
Labre and were in the same class from Kindergarten through
8th grade. Back in those days we stayed in the same
classroom the entire day so knew each other very well. We
parted ways after grammar school since we attended different
high schools. We had not seen each other in 50 years.
I knew that I would be seeing him at the meeting but it was a
complete surprise to him. We exchanged contact info
and look forward to getting together to catch up on the last
50 years.

Minutes for the January 20, 2010 Meeting
Raritan Valley Country Club
Bridgewater, NJ
Marilyn Cafone, CHAE, President, called the meeting to order at 5:55 p.m. Marilyn thanked our host Controller Judy Sterling
for allowing us to hold the meeting at Raritan Valley Country Club.
Marilyn asked for approval of the minutes from the November 18th meeting at Suburban Golf Club in Union, NJ. A motion
was made by Janet Reuther and seconded by David Kile, CHAE to approve the minutes. The motion was carried.
The course number for today’s educational portion of the meeting is 100120 and is eligible for one (1) CPE credit. The subject
is Managing your Personal and Business Finances.
Save the Dates:
May 24th is our Charity Golf Outing at Somerset Hills Country Club. This year we are adding tennis.
June 12th is the Walkathon for The Valerie Fund at Verona Park.
Committee reports:
Membership
We have 106 members. Please welcome our newest member Thomas O’Conner from Paymedia.
Education
The March 18th meeting is a joint meeting with the Philadelphia Chapter at Tavistock County Club and the topic is PC Boot
Camp presented by Mike Stenger of Atlantic-IT. April 28th is a breakfast meeting at Trump National Golf Club, Bedminster
and Charles Dorn will present. Janet asked for controllers to consider having a meeting this year at their property. The
August 20th social will be a day at the races at Monmouth Park Racetrack.
Finance
We are fully funded. We have $10,783 in the bank.
Website
Sheila asked the membership for suggestions for the website.
New Business
Marilyn stated that a brief survey to gauge potential participation in either the CHAE or CHTP reviews this year would be
forthcoming to see if there is enough interest to warrant the reviews.
Marilyn asked the membership to please respect the RSVP deadline for meetings and social events. The majority of the
reservations are last minute and this makes planning difficult for the host property. Judy Sterling suggested that we should
have a gift for the member who responds first with their RSVP. Kathie Brennan was the first to RSVP for this meeting and
was gifted with a Raritan Valley Country Club lunch bag filled with goodies.
There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 6:05 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Kathie Brennan, MBA, CHAE
Secretary

From the Desk of the Roving Reporter
Joe Seminerio, CHAE, CHTP, MBA
The New Jersey Club Managers Association sponsored an all-day workshop at the Borgata Hotel in Atlantic City on
Monday, January 11th. The topic was Franklin Covey’s “The 7 Habits for Managers.”
Because of its popularity, attendance had to be limited to 150, with about 12 controllers participating.
Since this was my first time at the Borgata, I was blown away by the fact that something so amazing could actually reside
in our state. Everything was first class, from the “car wash” style shower, which I could almost fit my car in, to the little
black box provided in each room. Everything needed for the lonely traveler.
As usual, our group (the dirty dozen) began our stay at the bar, and ended our stay at the bar. It was called the “Gypsy Bar”
which some of us are because we never know when to go home. And I had to do a double take to read the t-shirts that the
female bartenders were wearing. What the shirt said is inappropriate to print in such a fine publication as our Chapter’s
newsletter, so I will leave it to your imagination but it was an instruction manual on the proper way to consume a shot of
Tequila.
The seminar, however, was great, and the speaker kept our interest throughout the day. We all earned 6 CPE credits, and had
to be alert since there was a test at the end. Here are the 7 habits for those of you who are interested:
1 – Be proactive – use your resourcefulness and initiative to achieve results
2 – Begin with the end in mind – make a great contribution
3 – Put first things first – focus on a few “wildly important goals”
4 – Think win win – make win win performance agreements to motivate performance
5 – Seek first to understand, then to be understood – practice empathic listening and give feedback
6 – Synergize – always seek the 3rd alternative
7 – Sharpen the saw – unleash the potential of your team by tapping the “whole person”
Here are a few other things;
Our Company’s greatest resource is the people who are its workers.
If we, as managers, can lead our staff to be the best people they can be, then we’ll see the best results.
Now of the 7 habits, Sandra stayed for only 2 because she believes her club can’t handle all 7 at the same time. Lucky for
her though, she went to the nickel slot machine and won $600.00, though most of it went to pay for the oversized
pomegranate margaritas.
Yes, we ate too much, drank too much and didn’t get enough sleep, but it was a great weekend with some great friends.
