Rasulpur 2014 Rasulpur Project 2014 DEVELOPING YOURSELF THROUGH SOCIAL SERVICE Step 1- Meeting our partner, The Doon School • The Doon School is probably India’s most prestigious public school. It was founded in 1935 • Service projects are a fundamental part of their curriculum and currently they have 20 running. • They involve working with areas where there is no education, to building schools, to helping street children, to working in slums to women’s co-operatives. • All students and staff are involved. Step 2: Getting to know the city of Dehradun and the projects being carried out there. Step 3: One week in Rasulpur. pop:1,800; employment: mostly farmers; family income: £50 per month; enthusiasm for the school: unbounding. The Plan. • Build a school for children from 3-11 years old. • The school will hold up to 480 children. • The teachers are from the local area. • The project will be funded by Oakham and The Doon School, and other partners. • Doon School will take care of the day to day running of the project while we will go out once a year to help as much as we can and learn about the villagers and their way of life. • The school is projected to last for at least 100 years. The temporary school. Land for the school: 60 acres. Building should begin next spring. What will we do in the village and at the school? • We will be involved in the physical building of the school. • We will interact with the children, playing games and doing arts, crafts and sports with them. • We will learn about the villagers, their culture, traditions, economy and environment to understand better how we can co-operate with them. • We will have meetings with a school board made up of parents from the village, the village council, Doon School and ourselves to discuss the development of the project and its impact on the community. Step 4: Back to Doon School • To meet the Headmaster, staff and students. • Talk about our experiences and discuss. • Discuss where to go next with the school at Rasulpur. • Have time to relax and explore Dehradun. Travelling around India • We will travel around this extraordinary country on: • Buses • Trains • Rickshaws • Taxis • Planes • Boats • Elephants. • Be ready for bizarre, unbelievable experiences, great food, encounters with wild animals and some superb hotels. On this trip we see both sides of India, from the very simple austere life at the village to the opulence of palaces converted into luxury hotels. Jaipur Haveli NEW DELHI SHOPPING and TOURISM What can students get from this experience? • You will participate in a project that will make a life changing difference to a whole village. • You will learn how to develop international projects, from conception to realisation. • You will learn how to fund-raise sustainably. • You will develop your sensitivity and awareness of others. • You will interact with a culture and people not as a tourist, but as a partner. • You will get the chance to discuss and make important decisions. • You will get a fantastic insight into India through living with a community and travelling. • You can use this on your UCAS forms or job applications in the future. • You can stay involved in this project after you have finished, and go back and visit the school. • You will learn a lot about yourself. Arrive at Delhi airport. Train or bus to Dehradun, The Doon School • Day 2 … Meet the staff and students who will accompany us. Visit street children centre. • Day 3...Visit project with slum children. Prepare with Doon students and teachers for Rasulpur. • Day 4 … at the School project. Here we will get to know the children and villagers. Teach and interact with the children. Participate in the actual building of the school. Learn about the local environment the people their economy and way of life. • Day 11-12… Back to Doon school to discuss where we go next with the project • Day 13…Visit to Navdanya Bio-diversity Centre to see how organic farming helps the poor in India and meet Vandana Shiva, the Environmental Philosopher. • Day 13… Mussoorie • Day 14… Mussorie • Day 15.. Shimla • Day 16… Mcleod Gunj • Day 20… Flight to Delhi and bus to Agra… • Day 21…Visit Taj Mahal and Red fort and then bus to Jaipur. • Day 21-22… Visiting Jaipur. • Day 23… Bus or train back to Delhi. Two days shopping and sightseeing. • Day 25 … Return to the UK.
