What is the HUB Club?
What is the HUB Club, why should I attend,
what do they do, the questions go on and on?
The Club is seeking new members from
Sleepy Hollow Mobile Estates. Come to the clubhouse on Monday morning, enjoy the fellowship,
have a coffee and donut, if you desire but, come
and get to know your neighbors. The HUB Club is
park is a member, all are welcome.
The last surviving founding member of the
original HUB Club came to a meeting, a few years
ago, to present a program on the founding of the
Club. What is the HUB Club? The answers are in
the following article.
Reprinted from the February,
2008 issue. Prepared from
the HUB Club, January 21,
2008, at the age of 96.
Norman Roy celebrated his 96th birthday
attending the HUB Club
and being serenaded by the
HUB Club Chorus, singing
Happy Birthday. He noted
that the chorus has made
great strides since its
founding. (This photo is
Norman at his 1996 presentation.)
A group of four early residents of Sleepy
December, 1974.
More than thirty residents of the park
unanimously agreed to start the club on December
28, 1974. On the first Monday of January, 1975 the
club was officially founded. The first President was
Vance Swanson, the first Vice President was Norman Roy. The club had no name and the majority of
President Swanson came up with an idea
and told the members that he would present it at the
next meeting to see if they liked his idea. At that
first meeting in January, 1975, the name of HUB
Club was presented. The members were puzzled by
this strange name. It was explained that Zephyrhills
is the Hub of south central Florida. We are close to
Busch Gardens in Tampa, Disney World in
Orlando, Cypress Gardens in Winter Haven and
Weeki-Wachi Springs in Spring Hill.
With this explanation, they voted unanimous
HUB Club ever since.
The founding fathers could not have known
how much the area would grow over the next 30+
years [now, nearly 40 years] and how much of a
HUB Sleepy Hollow would really become. How
could our location be any more convenient? Not
only to the entertainment centers, but the medical
centers, the shopping centers, and much more.
For many years the games have been lurking in
brought out and are now ready to use again. Texas
horseshoes, Washers and more. Come play from 1 to
4 pm on Sunday afternoons. Bring a lawn chair,
sunscreen and drinks; you can play or just sit and
visit
Twin Oaks Park, corner of the Boulevard
and Remora Ave. You are invited.
Thank You for Remembering
Sharon Simmons asked for help to send
some Christmas spirit to her grandson, Cpl. William
(Mike) Simmons and the other Marines in his unit.
The platoon consists of 15 members in 1st Recon on
duty in Afganistan. She asked for items to send,
including Christmas cards, personal hygeine items
and foods. She reports a great variety of foods that
will be a big reminder of home. In all, there were
more than 250 Christmas cards, and ten large boxes
of items for the troops. There were many
contributors, from all three parks. Shipping was
paid by the HUB Club with help from Mark Ford of
maintenance. The Ladies Club purchased items to
add to the packages. Sharon Simmons mailed the
boxes from
on 5th Avenue, they
contributed the shipping cost for three boxes. Thank
you very much!
Bob Smith Achieves State Amateur Title
player and he has recently earned the title of State
Amateur. Bob, and his wife Donna, moved to
Sleepy Hollow Park 2 in 2000.
They were both introduced to
Shuffleboard. He joined the B
Park League and won a trophy in
the novice tournament in 2001,
he instantly became hooked on
Shuffleboard.
In 2002 he teamed up
with his good friend Ted Traviss,
playing in both the five and eight park leagues and
tournaments. They have been terrorizing the
member parks ever since.
Last season he gathered enough points to
play in the District Amateur. Going into the 201112 season he lacked one point for the title State
Amateur. Bob gained that point by placing third in
the main event at the Winter Haven Amateur Draw
Tournament in early December.
Bob and Donna play in a league two days a
week in Mt. Clemens, MI. Congratulations Bob!

Directors.
Directors whose terms are up are, Joe Brown

Here is a brief synopsis of each candidates
biography that was delivered to shareholders.

Upon retirement in
2004, they visited Sleepy
Hollow and purchased their
home at lot 12. Joe and
Annie have been married
since 1960, they have four
children and six grand
children. His work at
Sleepy Hollow has brought
him in contact with nearly
every resident, as he carried out his duties in park
maintenance. He became president at the 2011
annual meeting. He has also served as summer
manager for the past two years.
Bob Daughtry moved to Sleepy Hollow in 2010.
He and his wife of 42 years, Amelia, are from North
Carolina and Newfoundland respectively. They are
preparing to sell their northern home and become
electronic systems technology.
He retired from the Air Force in 1988 after

career forward. He retired as a
Senior Master Sergeant. He has
extensive experience in
maintenance, budgeting, safety and
personnel management.

Bea Joslin has been active in Sleepy Hollow since
1985, holding many offices in several organizations.
She was treasurer and secretary of the Social Club.

same exercises to most of the
younger residents.

founders of SHME, Inc., A
Resident Owned Community,
in the spring of 2000. She
continues to be finance chair,
a position she has held since
2000. In 2002, she was
elected treasurer, a position she still holds.
Bea is proud to be a part of the team that has
taken Sleepy Hollow from a rental park to a resident
owned community. At the time of purchase we
owed $4.3 million, the current debt is $1.7 million,
showing a job well done.
Bob Packard

volunteers in many events in the park, Bob is

Norman Roy to Turn 100
On January 15 our senior statesman Norman
Roy will turn 100. Norman first came to Sleepy
Hollow in 1973 shortly after the grand opening.
Having been here
for nearly 40
years, he has seen
most of the
history of our
park, from a
snow storm,
hurricanes, tornados, good times
and some bad
times. He is
shown here at his work in Massachusetts in 1952.
This photo was taken
last month when he came to a
HUB Club hamburger lunch.
There is nothing that makes
him happier than to return to
his home and see his friends.
The party, at 2:00 pm
on Saturday, January 7th is
sponsored and paid for by the
HUB Club. Norm was one of
the club founders and one of
the first officers of the club. There will be dancing
girls, the HUB Club Chorus, the entertainment of
our Park 1 musicians and much fun. Of course there
will be plenty of cake and ice cream.
boxer, baseball and football coach and sports official in several states. He is full of memories of his
students and youth players from long ago. When he
moved to Florida he became a baseball umpire,
traveling the state
to officiate.
This 1975
snowstorm, showing the maintenance
shop, is one of his
memories.

1975 Zephyrhills
Founders Day

as a baseball player and Lillian as a cheerleader.
This was the story of life. With teens in the middle
and a young couple being married in front.
Chistmas Parties and More Fun!
December 18th was a special occasion at the Clubhouse for those attending coffee hour. The 27 piece
Zephyrhills High School Jazz Band played an hour
long concert in front of a full house. Director
Russell Schmidt, 47, is only the third director in the
bands 60 year history. They are one of the top high
school bands in the state. Schmidt has been director
for 12 years. The band promised to come back for
another concert in March, watch your calendar.
Percy Ross, swept up the
raindeer leftovers, while Ladene Weir was Rudolf. There
was plenty of song and bad
jokes. Nurse Goodbody, Lynn
Cox, played a great role as the
head nurse at the home who got
called up to go to the North
health issues. Of course she
had to take her patients with
her, getting to meet the reindeer and a several of the
elves.
Touring to See the Lights
President Joe
grand daughters, Lauren &
Kiran Morrill
are enjoying a
tour of the
lights. They
are often
accompanying
Grampa on his rounds. The lights have been really
nice this year, so much fun to see them going up
each December. Many more homes decorated this
year, perhaps a sign of optimism. Christmas night
was the second annual bike, trike and golf cart
parade, led by Joe and the girls.
Several of the cast are shown here, in Sleepy
Hollow Retirement Home, preparing for Christmas.
Nurse Goodbody tries to keep the home under control, without much success. Cast members are
Leanor Puroll, Donna Benner, Sonny Farnham, Roy
Bracket, Annette Weir, Chuck Chapin and Lynn
Cox.

after receiving some presents.
Janice Smith gave Santa a

Smiles all around.
With a

the Christmas performances. Mark your calendars
for the Guys & Gals Spring Fling, March 11.
During that week, a large number of residents will
be sailing the ocean wide.
The Mummers are a Newfoundland tradition for ten
days before Christmas. They bring the Christmas
spirit to folks in the community. In the Newfoundland tradition this group of Mummers arrived in
costume, with their identities hidden. They danced
while Les Arnold sang a song about the Mummer
tradition. Seeing the traditions of another land
makes for great fun and brings us knowledge of the
people, in this case, our great friends and neighbors.
Show Palace Dinner Theater, Big Success
The December 22 trip to the theater was certainly day to get into the Christmas Spirit. With 96
residents and guests participating, the trip was sold
out. Two bus loads departed in mid-morning to
have a great buffet dinner, along with lots of fellowship, music and fun. Larry Myott and Dick Edie
were tour leaders. Reservations have already been
made for December 20, 2012.
January Cruise Informational Meeting

on January 8, for a 7 night-8day cruise of the Western Caribbean. The meeting, with travel agent Jeff
Fox of Carefree Vacations of St. Petersburg, FL,
brought every one up to date on cruising in 2012,
Special Thanks from Larry Myott and Shirley Humber to all
the helpers that made this meeting a big success for the
cruisers. Marcel Leclaire and his volunteer parking lot attendants, Al Steward and Dick Edie. In the hall, there were several volunteers who turned it after coffee hour, including
