PresidenT's MessAGe
T
his is the 20th anniversary of the MARTY’S. The
MARTY’S were set up two decades ago so as to highlight and promote excellence in the arts within our
city. Since those early days it has grown into a major
event, which now attracts at least 500 people a year.
The categories have expanded as well. Not just for the arts but also to
the broader concept of creative community. It is the belief of the Mississauga Arts Council that art does not reside solely with individuals
that call themselves artists but also individuals that try to create works
that become art over time through their efforts. These individuals, just
like artists, have to be recognized to add to the richness of our cultural
and aesthetic fabric. In the 20 years since the MARTY’S began, our city
has grown exponentially. More and more we see our city as a destination for culture and the arts, be it in performance art, symphonies,
visual arts and literature. The Mississauga Arts Council has steadily
and persistently supported all of the arts and will continue to do so. It
is also the role of the Mississauga Arts Council to break down barriers
so that all communities can participate equally in and be inspired by
the arts. We do not want to be stuck in silos where one group of people
shows up for a certain group of artists and another group of people
shows up for another group of artists. Art should and must be color
blind. It should not be relegated to specific communities; it should transcend community and go to the core of who we are. The Mississauga
Arts Council will be implementing its strategic plan in the upcoming
and following years to reach out to broader communities to enhance
culture and the arts within our city. The MARTY’S are but a small
portion of this effort. It is an important effort, but it is only one piece
of the puzzle. We will need our members to support us going forward
in enhancing the art and culture experience. There will be a need for
new ideas from staff as to how to promote this. We will need to reach
out to more communities and peoples. We will need to reach out to the
business community and to city council to help promote the arts and
put them at the forefront of development in the city. We believe that
culture and the arts can be and should be the underlying principles for
making a city vibrant and economically viable. With the beginning of
spring we are hopeful that this renewal and commitment to do so will
have its effect in the upcoming year and years to come.

very year, the Mississauga Arts Council’s (MAC) annual ARTBEATS Fundraiser returns to enthrall the
audience in a bigger and better way! This year ARTBEATS turned into a carnivale infused with the rich
Latin culture that entertained the attendees throughout the evening.
The gala began with a glamorous red carpet reception at
the Renaissance by the Creek and saw the who’s who of the city
posing for the cameras and enjoying the evening. With more than
200 people in attendance, the ARTBEATS Carnivale was a huge hit!

Mississauga's creative community came

Breakfast
M
ississauga Arts Council once again added more
joy to the season’s festivities at its 2013 Cranberry Breakfast held on December 6, 2013 at the
Living Arts Centre. The Cranberry Breakfast was
an invigorating morning of networking, inspiration, culinary delights, raffle prizes and entertainment. The morning
began with some jazzy Christmas carols, played by pianist Victor
Cheng. Motivational Speaker, Youth Mentor & Coach, Dan Blackburn,
shared his wisdom on achieving personal greatness.
He delivered a powerful message on how to ensure the person
looking back at you in the mirror lives an inspiring and inspired life,
while on the inevitable quest to return to ‘your’ Joy Island.

This annual event has been brigning together the artistic community of Mississauga for over 31 years and this year was no different. Cheng’s music spread the festive spirit among the attendees and
Blackburn’s speech inspired everyone to work towards achieving
greatness. The attendees also got the opportunity to talk about their
art, achievements, upcoming events and highlights of the year. The
event ended on a high note as all the artists enjoyed the ambiance, the
food and went home with amazing raffle prizes. n

MAC: The Arts Family
Communications Intern at the Mississauga Arts Council shares her
experiences as a MAC team member
E
very artist starts with a dream… a dream of creating
something. The arts are not just a luxurious interest
or something to do in free time. They are a means
by which people express and interpret the world
around them, enhance creative thinking and add
value to our community. Not everyone appreciates all forms of art;
that is why the Mississauga Arts Council (MAC) and the Limelight
Association of Young Artists are so valuable. The organization
works on developing, engaging and promoting artists of all diversities: disciplines, ages, cultures and abilities.
For any artist looking to take that next step, work on and/or
develop your talent, MAC is worth the investment! I first came
across MAC while applying for the Communications Intern position back in December 2013. As a motivated, results-driven student
from the Humber College Public
Relations Advanced Diploma

me. Since starting back in January,
MAC and its amazing staff has
helped me gain industry knowledge, validate my PR abilities, make
professional contacts and improve my confidence. The Mississauga Arts Council continues to grow because of the heart-warming,
passionate staff working behind the scenes. Together they contribute in supporting and promoting the activities of art organizations
and individual members in Mississauga. What inspires me is that
every day, there’s at least one member who comes into the office
to stop by and chat--even if there’s lots of work to be done, the
ladies of MAC will take the time to welcome and listen to them.
You want people around to share your passion, triumphs, defeats
and personal stories. MAC is more than an organization; it’s like a
familyof artists.
I’m so grateful for the people I’ve meet so far. From the
diverse, talented artists, individuals and other organizations who
collaborate with us, to the amazing staff who has welcomed me
into their family—they’ve all shaped me in some way. They’re
role models who inspire me to bring out the best in myself. If you
haven’t become a member already, join the MAC family today! n

About the MARTY AWARD TROPHY
T
he Mississauga Arts awards (MARTYS) has been honouring and celebrating excellence in arts for the past 20 years. It is proud of its rich
heritage and of the fact that the organization has grown with its members and reached new horizons of discovering art and successfully promoting it. MAC believes in the uniqueness of every artistic expression. It
honours its MARTYS winners with a unique memory too: The MARTY Awards trophy.
It is a momento that is created afresh every year symbolising the success and talent of
the winner which is one of a kind just like the trophies.
In 2013, ceramic artist Jolanta Jung created the MARTYS trophies; a series of 14
unique sculptures that were awarded to the winners. This year too, MAC is all set to surprise the winners and the attendees of the 2014 MARTY Awards. The fact that it is the
20th anniversay of the awards makes it even more special. Wondering what it is? Well,
you will have to see it to belive it! Till then, happy guessing! n

passion for music with everyone,” says Eileen Keown,
General Manager, MSO. “A natural teacher and communicator, he is an ideal leader for a large communitybased orchestra like the MSO and its youth orchestra,

the composer, through to the musicians and on to the

It influences, inspires and stimulates those it touches
but is also effected by each individual, their emotion
and passion that they bring to the music.” Since his
appointment at MSO in 2013, Mastromonaco is taking
the city of Mississauga on an adventurous journey of
rediscovering the joys of classical music. He is reigniting this spark through the Mississauga Symphony Orchestra and is adding a new dimension to this amazing
organization’s culture, achievement and history.
At the MSO, Mastromonaco hopes to build on the
organization’s strong foundation and move forward in
a positive direction which includes the inception of a
youth orchestra, an expanded season, new and exciting soloists and a continued commitment to quality.
Mastromonaco is now mentoring aspiring young musicians that has led to the creation of the Mississauga
Symphony Youth Orchestra (MSYO). The MSYO is
divided into two ensembles; a chamber strings group,
and a full symphonic orchestra. All members of the
MSYO will perform in four concerts annually within
