The MARTY’S were set up two decades ago so as to highlight and promote excellence in the arts within our city. Since those early days it has grown into a major event, which now attracts at least 500 people a year. The categories have expanded as well. Not just for the arts but also to the broader concept of creative community. It is the belief of the Mississauga Arts Council that art does not reside solely with individuals that call themselves artists but also individuals that try to create works that become art over time through their efforts. These individuals, just like artists, have to be recognized to add to the richness of our cultural and aesthetic fabric. In the 20 years since the MARTY’S began, our city has grown exponentially. More and more we see our city as a destination for culture and the arts, be it in performance art, symphonies, visual arts and literature. The Mississauga Arts Council has steadily and persistently supported all of the arts and will continue to do so. It is also the role of the Mississauga Arts Council to break down barriers so that all communities can participate equally in and be inspired by the arts. We do not want to be stuck in silos where one group of people shows up for a certain group of artists and another group of people shows up for another group of artists. Art should and must be color blind. It should not be relegated to specific communities; it should transcend community and go to the core of who we are. The Mississauga Arts Council will be implementing its strategic plan in the upcoming and following years to reach out to broader communities to enhance culture and the arts within our city. The MARTY’S are but a small portion of this effort. It is an important effort, but it is only one piece of the puzzle. We will need our members to support us going forward in enhancing the art and culture experience. There will be a need for new ideas from staff as to how to promote this. We will need to reach out to more communities and peoples. We will need to reach out to the business community and to city council to help promote the arts and put them at the forefront of development in the city. We believe that culture and the arts can be and should be the underlying principles for making a city vibrant and economically viable. With the beginning of spring we are hopeful that this renewal and commitment to do so will have its effect in the upcoming year and years to come. Bohdan A. The arts are not just a luxurious interest or something to do in free time. They are a means by which people express and interpret the world around them, enhance creative thinking and add value to our community. Not everyone appreciates all forms of art; that is why the Mississauga Arts Council (MAC) and the Limelight Association of Young Artists are so valuable. The organization works on developing, engaging and promoting artists of all diversities: disciplines, ages, cultures and abilities. For any artist looking to take that next step, work on and/or develop your talent, MAC is worth the investment! I first came across MAC while applying for the Communications Intern position back in December 2013. As a motivated, results-driven student from the Humber College Public Relations Advanced Diploma For any artist looking to take that next program, finding a good internstep, work on and/or develop your talship was extremely important to ent, MAC is worth the investment! me. Since starting back in January, MAC and its amazing staff has helped me gain industry knowledge, validate my PR abilities, make professional contacts and improve my confidence. The Mississauga Arts Council continues to grow because of the heart-warming, passionate staff working behind the scenes. Together they contribute in supporting and promoting the activities of art organizations and individual members in Mississauga. What inspires me is that every day, there’s at least one member who comes into the office to stop by and chat--even if there’s lots of work to be done, the ladies of MAC will take the time to welcome and listen to them. You want people around to share your passion, triumphs, defeats and personal stories. MAC is more than an organization; it’s like a familyof artists. I’m so grateful for the people I’ve meet so far. From the diverse, talented artists, individuals and other organizations who collaborate with us, to the amazing staff who has welcomed me into their family—they’ve all shaped me in some way. They’re role models who inspire me to bring out the best in myself. If you haven’t become a member already, join the MAC family today! n Kelly Pacheco 8 I MISSISSAUGA ARTS New MAC members and suporters wELCOME TO mac Walter & Erica Alza Barry Pearson Eileen Oswald Alza Acting Studio Adriana Persaud Robert Widdup Monica Anedo Teesha Persaud Catherine P.
