purchaser at the fall of the gavel.
Transportation and Insurance
Truckers believed to reliable will be on hand to deliver
purchases. Assistance in arranging transportation of
purchases is available. Insurance can be purchased at the
settlement desk.
Birth Weight and Calving Ease
We recommend that bulls purchased as heifer bulls be
sampled on a small group of heifers to determine the true
calving ease potential for your herd before breeding to a
large group of heifers.
Ultrasound
We have elected not to ultrasound our bulls until research
has been conducted that allows for IMF adjustments based
on sex hormone levels. The goal of IMF ultrasound is to
help accurately predict marbling scores in steer progeny.
Steer marbling scores are largely unaffected by sex hormone
levels. Conversely, bull and heifer ultrasound IMF scores
are largely affected by sex hormone levels (testosterone,
estrogen, and progesterone). Basically, the higher the sex
hormone levels, the lower the IMF scores. Common sense
thus dictates that sex hormone levels in breeding cattle
must be measured and adjustments made to accurately help
predict steer progeny marbling scores. The current
system makes no adjustments and therefore produces
flawed marbling EPDs which unfairly reward breeding
cattle that are low in sex hormones. Low sex hormone cattle
can have fertility problems, and fertility is by far the most
important factor in commercial producer profitability.
Animal Health
All bulls are tested negative for Brucellosis and TB. Health
papers will be available for interstate shipment.
Breeding Guarantee
Fertility- All bulls have passed semen tests and breeding
soundness examinations. Scrotal measurements are
available on request. All bulls are fertility guaranteed as
recommended by the American Angus Association in the
Sale Terms and Conditions. Claims for nonbreeders must
be made promptly and within 4 months of the bull being put
in service and no later than December 31, 2016.

DNA tests available that are monitored by the American
Angus Association.

Dear Friends,
pm
March 1, 2016
It is our pleasure to welcome you to the 20th Annual Headquarters for Hindquarters Angus
Bull Sale. We would like to thank our many friends and loyal customers for supporting our
Angus programs the past two decades. The beef industry has a bright future. We look forward
to the next twenty years!
The most profitable commercial producers wisely seek genetics that fit their environment
and require a minimum of inputs. That is the continued focus of our breeding programs and
a philosophy we have faithfully executed for over 35 years. Our herds thrive on grass and
grass hay. Calves are not creep fed to protect the value of maternal records. Selecting cattle is
more than just reading the numbers. In our quest for balanced trait cattle, we keep pressure
on the necessary production traits of fertility, longevity, udder quality, disposition, structural
soundness, production efficiency and fleshing ability.
On Saturday March 19th, we will offer an excellent group of deep, stout, heavy-muscled bulls
of outcross genetics with growth and maternal value. They are the result of cattle selected for
generations to excel in a low-input environment.
After weaning, the bulls are developed in large lots with plenty of room for exercise. They
are self-fed a high-roughage, by-product ration and free-choice, long stem hay. You are welcome
to view the bulls on our respective farms prior to March 17th. They will be available for
inspection at the Rockingham County Fairgrounds beginning the afternoon of March 18th. If
you have any questions, please give us a call. We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, March
19th.

HeadQuarters for HindQuarters
Rediscover the Great Angus Cow
The Angus breed gained widespread popularity during the second half of the
twentieth century in large part because of the great Angus cow. The great Angus cow
provided the foundation genetics of choice for cattlemen because she was a fertile, low
input, problem free production unit. Cow herds that are low input and highly productive
provide the recipe for success in the commercial cow calf business.
A Change of Direction
Around the turn of this century, many breeders and industry leaders turned away
from selection for maternal traits in favor of selection for terminal traits, like carcass merit
and $Beef. In our 2014 catalog, we shared our concerns with this change. For example,
we believe that the practice of selection for steer marbling scores by using ultrasound
measurements from yearling breeding cattle is not only conceptually flawed, but also places
maternal traits at risk of erosion. We have recently seen data that suggests these concerns are
well founded.
A Real World Decline
Production costs evaluated alongside pounds weaned per cow exposed yield the
true cost per pound of production—the figure most closely correlated to cow calf producer
profitability. Data from large commercial herds analyzed by
Kris Ringwall, beef extension specialist from North Dakota State University, shows that from
2000 to 2014:
(1) weaning weights have not changed,
(2) pounds weaned per cow exposed have decreased by over 20 pounds, and
(3) costs per pound weaned have doubled, from $0.69 to $1.38.
A decrease of 20 pounds weaned per cow exposed means producers have four fewer
calves to sell per 100 cows exposed, a huge decline in production. (It should be noted that
weaning EPDs increased by 21 pounds over this time period, but actual weaning weights in
commercial herds stayed the same. Furthermore, a similar data analysis from different herds
over a similar time period by Stan Bevers, Texas Beef Extension, showed pounds weaned per
cow exposed decreased by 25 pounds.)
During the 15 years from 2000 to 2014, many Angus breeders aggressively bred for
terminal traits, while their commercial customers saw weaning performance stay the same,
pounds weaned per cow exposed decrease by 20 pounds, and costs per pound of weaned calf
double. This is not a coincidence.

Reasons for the Decline
We believe that increased cow size and decreased fertility are the reasons for these
problems. Selection for performance and terminal traits without concurrent selection
discipline for mature frame size resulted in much bigger cows, which directly affected cow
costs and likely also adversely affected fertility. We also believe fertility has been adversely
affected by selection for high marbling levels evaluated by ultrasound in breeding cattle. Sex
hormones (testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone) negatively impact marbling scores, so
selection for high marbling levels in breeding cattle simultaneously selects for decreased sex
hormones, which results in decreased fertility.
No Decline in our Programs
Rest assured, our breeding plan remains focused on the traits that made the Angus
cow great. Our pedigrees have been stacked for multiple generations for low input, fertile,
easy fleshing, sound structured cattle that are moderate framed, easy calving, and heavy
muscled. As a result, our herds are the best they have ever been.
With our roots firmly planted in the commercial cow calf business, we know from
experience that truly great cows are the ones that are low input, fertile, long lived, and
productive. We also know it takes great cows to be successful in the cow calf business, and
that it takes bulls bred with a deep heritage of maternal genetics to sire great cows. Contact
us if you are ready for a bull that can sire great cows.

We purchased Whitley to use on females that trace to Substance and his dam, Benfield Edella 1105. He was the top
performing individual in his calf crop. He is doing a great job! The Whitley x Substance cross combines the best genetic lines
developed in the Benfield and White Ridge herds and is a truly unique pedigree that will be a feature of the Benfield program
for years to come. Whitley consistently sires extra power, base width, volume, capacity, and muscle in a free moving and
moderate birth weight package.

beautiful daughter of Image Maker and a full sister to Benfield Substance 8506 and Benfield Elliott 029. This bull drew
our attention since the day he was born. A moderate birth weight bull and calving ease prospect, he was one of the top
performance bulls with a ratio of 107 for weaning and 103 for yearling. He is the mirror image of his full brother who sold
last year for $8500. Don’t overlook this docile, moderate framed herd bull with a unique but proven outcross pedigree!

We searched nationwide for a herd bull that would meet our strict selection criteria, and ironically found him right under
our noses at our neighbor’s Mystic Hill Farm in Culpeper. A complete outcross to our program, Mack features a pedigree
stacked many generations deep with fertile, sound, functional, fault free cattle. His sire, Mick, was a long time Select Sires
roster member best known for his fabulous, long lived, and productive daughters. Mack’s dam has earned her place as one
of the elite cows in the Mystic Hill program—in fact, a full brother to Mack topped their fall, 2015 sale at $13,000 to Brad
Boner in Wyoming. Mack’s combination of low birthweight, high performance genetics with rock solid maternal value makes
him a sire that will have significant influence in our herd for years to come.
Owned with Mystic Hill Farm.

Lot 12 is a true herd sire prospect that is hard to fault with his terrific phenotype, superb individual performance, and
enviable heritage. Mack Donald is a well balanced, heavy muscled, and structurally sound prospect with tremendous length
of body. He combines the antagonistic traits of low birthweight and high performance flawlessly. His Pathfinder dam
records 4@97 BWR and 4 @ 108 WWR with a 364 day calving interval. Plus, she is a full sister to the dam of Reference
Sire A, WRA Whitley. On top of all this, Mack Donald has a wonderfully quiet disposition—scratch his back and you will
have a friend for life.
Selling 2/3 interest and full possession.

We cannot recommend a calving ease prospect any higher than Lot 13. His feminine, moderate framed dam is one of our
favorite young cows, and she records 3 @ 92 BWR and 3 @ 102 WWR. Individually, C1 is a long bodied, well balanced, big
nutted prospect with tremendous base width, muscle and volume for a low birthweight bull. A high probability of calving ease
coupled with a moderate framed, heavy muscled phenotype and low input maternal genetics make C1 a valuable herd sire
prospect.

Colt A45 is a true herd bull and multi-dimensional sire with highly proven genetics on the top and bottom of his pedigree.
His dam is the mother of the popular Benfield Substance 8506, a featured sire at Genex, and Benfield Reality 6211, a
featured bull at Select Sires. Benfield Edella 1105 consistently transfers muscle, volume, performance and keeping ability to
her sons while moderating birth weights. We retained a spring possession on Colt and his first calf crop is truly outstanding
including 11 sons in this year’s sale with a combined weaning ratio of 104 and a yearling ratio of 102. His progeny possess
great performance with extra volume, capacity and muscle in a moderate birth weight package.

Here is a power herd bull that puts it all together. He was the second high weaning weight bull at 792 pounds with a 114
ratio. Although he was too young to report for American Angus records in time for our catalog, we calculated his yearling
weight at 1356 lbs. We like his balance, fault free structure and attractive phenotype. He is deep and long bodied with plenty
of muscle. His Tracker 458 dam is a powerful and productive cow with three calves at weaning for a 107 ratio. Lot 32 is
stacked Benfield breeding with Colt x Tracker 458 x Kona x Ringo.

Cedar Run is proving that our confidence in him was
well founded. His sire, Cedar Ridge, is a product of the
nation’s premier no nonsense, low input, grass based
breeding program at Cole Creek Angus Ranch in Joliet,
Montana. The Cole Creek herd does not compromise
on the valuable traits not measured by EPDs, such as
structural soundness, fertility, longevity, and maternal
efficiency. A total outcross, Cedar Ridge offers calving
ease with functional efficiency for low input programs.
Cedar Run effectively combines these positive traits
of Cedar Ridge with the added performance and
muscle from his dam, 115P. She is also the dam of
T10, Vindicator, and Walker. A powerful, beautifully
patterned, heavy muscled and moderate framed
individual, Cedar Run is proving to be a sire of moderate
framed, well balanced, heavy muscled, low input and low
birthweight progeny. We can’t wait to get his daughters
into production.

the Lucy cow family made famous at Van Dyke Angus Ranch in Manhattan, Montana. C14 is one of the heaviest muscled

Run, and maternal grandsire, Topper. Expect his daughters to make stout and productive brood cows.

With a BWR of 89 on 4 calves, the dam of Lot 35 is proving to be our lowest birthweight cow. His own 68 pound
birthweight coupled with the calving ease of his sire and dam help predictions that C19 will have a high probability of being
a low birthweight sire. Just as importantly though, is the fact that C19 is a moderate framed, heavy muscled, well balanced,
structurally sound calf. His daughters should make moderate framed, wide bodied, low input brood cows.

Lot 36 is a maternal and ¾ brother to WRA Mirror Image Z11, a T10 son that sold to Jason Kading of Millbrook, New

were in high demand and Z11 himself topped the sale at $11,000. We believe that C8 has the same herd bull potential. He is
a moderate framed, sound structured, heavy muscled prospect that should be an outstanding maternal sire.

Reality was the pick of Select Sires from an impressive group of embryo transfer calves by S Chisum 6175 out of Benfield
Edella 1105, also the dam of Substance. We believe Reality is a true balanced trait bull that does everything well and will
produce cattle with high economic merit. His first calves have demonstrated moderate birthweights with added growth
and performance. The high selling bull in last year’s sale was a Reality son for $9500. Reality is a wide based bull with an
exceptionally deep quarter. Select Sires has commented that Reality may be the best footed bull in their lineup.

Raised on a 2 year old dam, Lot 46 exploded after weaning, achieving our best post weaning gain figures. He has
developed into an excellent prospect with above average length of body. Slightly larger framed than his paternal brothers,
C9 should sire fault free cattle with excellent performance.

Motive is a Canadian bred bull we used selectively on heifers to produce outcross progeny in our program. He consistently
sires structurally sound cattle with low birthweights and a gentle disposition. His progeny possess adequate muscle,
volume, and growth for calving ease genetics.

Lot 53 is a calving ease prospect by Soo Line Motive 9016. Although he was out of a first calf heifer, he was the top
gaining bull from weaning to yearling and tied for our high yearling weight at 1417 lbs. We like his balance, structural
soundness, length of body and strong maternal heritage in combination with a low birth weight EPD. His two year dam is
by Final Answer. The grandam is a full sister to Benfield Reality 6211.

and 1200 lb. yearling weight meets our expectations. Lot 55 can work on heifers or cows.
