Winnipeggers understand all about teamwork. We know we can do much more to create positive change in our community when we work together; pooling our strengths, knowledge and resources to enhance our leverage and deepen our impact. Together, we have made a lot of things possible that would not have happened otherwise. In 2011, we raised $19.7 million to change lives through United Way. This book is filled with hundreds of reasons why United Way is able to reach out to Winnipeggers when they need help most. It contains the names of businesses and organizations that anchor our team because they recognize the value of participating in a United Way campaign – as much for their own team as for the entire community. Companies like PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, where the rewards of increased participation are really adding up. Or CanadaDrugs.com Group of Companies, where a four-to-one match is a prescription for teambuilding success. Or RBC Royal Bank, where employees have a chance to see the impact of their donations firsthand while lending a hand on community projects through a Day of Caring. THANK YOU for trusting United Way to make a difference in the lives of people living in Winnipeg, including your employees, customers, clients and associates. With one in three Winnipeggers impacted by United Way programs every year, you are bound to know someone. Thank you for recognizing that real and lasting change in Winnipeg begins with you. Doug Finkbeiner 2012 Campaign Chair, United Way of Winnipeg United Way Salute 1 Corporate Cornerstones In 2002, United Way recognized the following companies whose strong and loyal support formed, and continues to sustain, a solid foundation for the pursuit of our shared goal – better lives for everyone. Campaign Chair’s Award Chris Couture, Managing Partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP and a member of United Way’s 2011 Campaign Cabinet, alongside Employee Campaign Co-chairs Jeff Eckstein and Mary Ann Porter. Edward Kennedy presented the trio with their award during our 2011 Celebration. PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP The bottom line on success By starting their campaign early and inspiring more than 96% employee participation in 2011, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP took a quantum leap toward a company-wide commitment to our community and United Way. In the process, they earned their very first Campaign Chair’s Award. A record number of employees and partners donated $1200 or more – 31 compared to 22 in 2010. That leadership is key, says Mary Ann. “We get tremendous support from the partners and senior leaders of the firm. That really helps in the success of our United Way campaigns.” In the past five years, PricewaterhouseCoopers’ United Way campaign has nearly doubled. “I think every year, people become more aware of the importance of United Way; the need to support it; the many types of agencies supported by United Way; how it’s touched probably everybody in one way or another.” United Way Salute 3 Employee Campaign Chair Award This award celebrates and recognizes Employee Campaign Chairs who are shining examples of best practice, creativity, enthusiasm and energy. I started People First HR Services in 2000 and we’ve run a United Way Pacesetter campaign every year. We have very high goals for our campaigns and we know that early success from our company and other Pacesetters is very important because it sends a message to those companies coming behind us: if we can do it, they can do it. John McFerran President, People First HR Services Workplace Pacesetters take the lead and show us how it’s done by running their employee campaigns in advance of the annual campaign kickoff. RBC A Credit to Our Community Imagine a workplace initiative that’s not only exciting enough to engage regular staff, but employees voluntarily come out on their holidays, and bring their families along too. That’s what routinely happens at RBC’s annual Day of Caring. “Being active and getting out of the office is always a great team motivator,” says Rob Johnston, RBC Regional President, Manitoba, Saskatchewan & Northwestern Ontario. “But the Day of Caring is so much more than just an outing – it changes how people feel about their community. Our team members look forward to it each year. It is always a day of camaraderie and community building with a positive sense of accomplishment as important projects are completed.” 34 United Way Salute RBC – A Credit to Our Community continued RBC’s staff and family members spent a sunny August 4, 2011 in the fresh air and gorgeous grounds of Camp Y painting the facility’s many outbuildings and helping with general cleanup. This seemingly simple act of caring accomplished a month’s worth of work for the youth-serving facility. “No words can explain how much help this is to us,” said Cam Young, Camp Y coordinator. Last year, 800 volunteers from 63 workplaces, organizations and schools participated in a Day of Caring project. Together they invested over 4000 volunteer hours and completed 100 much needed projects at 40 different United Way agencies. Day of Caring A Day of Caring provides opportunities for team building and to gain a greater understanding of the needs in our community. Thank you to these workplaces and organizations who lent time, materials or other resources to help United Way agency partners complete painting, renovations, event planning, and landscaping projects. These projects would not have been possible without these volunteers.
