Dear Members,
As I write this, I am thinking of all that has been accomplished over the past year and I am looking forward to the promise of the year
ahead. This ArtView and Annual Report issue details the Hunter’s activity for 2012-2013. It also highlights the many traditions we are
about to celebrate.
The festive trees of Holidays at the Hunter, as well as the excitement of our New Year’s Eve Party are upon us. (New Year’s Eve Party
tickets go on sale December 1. Get yours before we sell out!) Additionally, the Go Figure exhibition, featuring works from our permanent
collection, is opening November 26 and it offers a great reason to visit this holiday season.
Looking back, we are grateful for another successful Spectrum charitable art auction. This event supports diverse educational programs,
provides compelling exhibitions, and builds the Museum’s collection.
In September, we launched The George T. Hunter Society, which has been established to formally recognize and honor those who have
generously included the Museum in their legacy planning. Through 2014, we will be acknowledging everyone making commitments
to the society as Founders. We hope you will consider including the Hunter in your estate plan and becoming one of these Founders.
We are grateful to those who have already stepped forward and acknowledged their plans to us.
As the Museum provides enriching educational opportunities, world-class concert series, and phenomenal exhibits, we hope you will
remember the Museum in your year-end giving. As your membership nears expiration in the year ahead, please not only consider
renewing, but taking your membership to the next charitable giving level. Consideration of gifts of artwork are always appreciated.
Sponsorships are another great way to not only make engaging programs and exhibits possible, but they are a fantastic way to market
your business in a non-cluttered way or to support an area of personal interest at the Hunter.
As another year is on the verge of history, I get nostalgic and reflect on family, friends, and community. I am grateful that you are a part
of the Hunter Family. Your friendship and support helps us achieve our mission and our community is all the better for it.
Best wishes to you and your family in this wonderful season of celebration and throughout the year ahead.
I’ll see you in the galleries,
Daniel E. Stetson

EXHIBITION
SELECTIONS FROM THE HUNTER MUSEUM’S
PERMANENT COLLECTION
Nov. 26, 2013 – Feb. 2, 2014
Artists have been exploring the human figure for thousands of
years from the Ancient Egyptians and Sumerians to today, and
this journey has taken a diversity of forms that range from
realistic to expressionistic to abstract. This exhibition of nearly
forty works presents a selection of artists from the Hunter
Museum’s collection of figurative art. Examining the human
form and the portrait from a variety of perspectives, these
contemporary artists delve into a myriad of portrayals of the
figure, and the accompanying narratives that shape human life.
Featured will be artists such as Leon Golub and Tony Scherman,
whose heavily layered painting techniques and enigmatic portrait
heads speak to the deeply significant themes of loss and
mortality. Realists Philip Pearlstein and Bo Bartlett precisely
www.huntermuseum.org
depict the figure, but leave us wondering about the narrative
behind the works. Sculptural representations include Alan
Siegal’s Woman as Chair, Duane Hanson’s Fundraiser, and
Catharine Newell’s Fleeting Sketches on Glass.
Whether mythological, historical or contemporary, reinterpreting
the human form is a consistent theme in the art of America.
As we look into each face, we wonder both about the person
being depicted as well as the artist who created the work. What
is each story about? How does it relate to our lives today? No
matter whether the image is meticulously painted or scraped on
with a palette knife, each portrait, each figure holds a story
behind it, one that speaks to the search for identity as well to the
larger themes of our lives—happiness, loss, hope, conflict, joy.

Harlem Renaissance, Civil Rights Era and Beyond
African American Art: Harlem Renaissance, Civil Rights Era and Beyond presents
nearly 100 works by 43 artists who lived through the tremendous socio-political
changes of the 20th century. In paintings, sculpture, prints and photographs, the
featured artists embrace themes both universal and specific to the African American
experience, including the exploration of identity, the struggle for equality, the power

Ranging from photography, painting, prints, and folk art to video, this
was a busy year for acquisitions to the permanent collection. We
received a number of generous gifts from both private collections and
artists, and were also able to purchase several significant works for
the collection. These included a portrait of George Washington by
renowned artist Rembrandt Peale, one of the sons of famed
entrepreneur, Charles Willson Peale. This Washington portrait had
been on loan to the museum for some time, but was offered to us
last year as a partial gift. With the support of donors and acquisition
funds, the museum was able to keep the work here and make it part
of the collection. Other noteworthy purchases included Stowage by
artist Willie Cole, a large woodblock print that addresses the legacy
of the slave trade in America, Charles Biederman’s impressive and
dimensional Abstraction #17, and an important self portrait by artist
Chuck Close acquired through our Spectrum auction. We were also
able to purchase a video work by Surabhi Saraf from the video
exhibition that the Hunter organized earlier in 2012. This is only the
second video piece in the museum’s collection.

This year focused on Hunter-organized exhibitions and on community ties. Featured was the third
installment of the Chattanooga Gems series, for which works were loaned from nearly forty private
collections in the area. This exhibition helps build bridges to area donors and allows visitors to see the
amazing artwork that resides in the region. Additionally, the Museum exhibited a wonderful selection of
African American works from the private collection of Carnetta and Norm Davis from Birmingham.
The Hunter’s continuing legacy was celebrated with an exhibition commemorating sixty years of
collecting. The Museum further highlighted one of the collection’s strengths—landscapes, with the
exhibit, Exploring the Land: Landscapes from the Hunter Collection.
Alan White: A Celebration examined the paintings and prints of this local artist and professor, as he retired
from forty years with the University of Tennessee Art Department. Alan White has had a significant
presence in the arts community locally, and this exhibit allowed visitors to see his personal growth as
an artist over the years.
Finally, the Hunter commissioned MacArthur prize winner Whitfield Lovell to create a large site specific
work for a major, summer exhibition. The resulting piece, Deep River, explored the history of Chattanooga’s
Camp Contraband, the legacy of the Civil War, as well as the universal themes of struggle, hope and
resilience. Deeply moving, the installation reminded viewers of their united cultural history.
Jellies: Living Art
Organized with the Tennessee Aquarium, exhibited at the Tennessee Aquarium
(Exhibit was reinstalled in the summer of 2013 and is ongoing.)

2013 ANNUAL REPORT
EDUCATION
DEPARTMENT
FISCAL YEAR 2012 - 2013
The Hunter’s Education Department strives to respond to the Museum’s guests’ interests and needs with
respect to program planning and opportunities to engage visitors with the Hunter’s collections and
exhibitions. This year’s departmental realignment, newly inaugurated programs, and gallery experiences
have helped to strengthen relationships with the growing community.
SCHOOLS
________________________________________________
Unum’s generous funding allows the Hunter to welcome public,
private, and home school students for free teacher-guided tours and
provides all educators with complimentary gallery training tailored
for their visit plans as well as the opportunity for gallery or studio
teaching assistance for a reduced fee.
• Monthly Pre-K days bring 3-5 year olds and parents for group
learning and exploration.
• Home School workshops offered in-depth studio and social
studies experiences.
• 6-week Art After School sessions give elementary aged students
a chance to get hands-on experience with a variety of media.
• Hamico provided funding for specialized programs for Title 1
schools including Calvin Donaldson, Battle Academy, Woodmore
and Bess T. Shepherd Elementary, along with high school students
from Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy, the STEM school
and the Urban League National Achievement Scholars.
• Rotating monthly studio hall exhibits showcased work from
local students.
• Adopt-an-Artwork program invites teacher teams to develop
classroom-based curriculum centered on a work in the collection
in exchange for opportunities at the museum for their students.
Art + Issues, the Art Wise Distinguished Lecture Series, All-American
Summer, FREE First Sundays, Artful Yoga, and Holidays at the Hunter
are just a few of our many programs that give visitors new ways to
access the Museum. Programs were also assessed and upgraded
thanks to the “Friends asking Friends” project and a resulting
ambassadors panel.
• Targeted teacher workshops assisted educators with developing
gallery and Socratic teaching, curriculum design and team-building
skills, as well as a new Common Core-based curricular guide,
which is available to all teachers online.
• Education Department staff served on several regional educational
boards and task forces to continue active participation in the
future of regional educational offerings.
• 9 sessions of summer art camp offered fun for children of all ages.
Public
programs
________________________________________________
• Courtesy of the generous sponsorship of Easy Auto, FREE First
Sundays greet an average of 1,200 guests monthly for live music,
drop-in art experiences, docent-led tours, and gallery exploration.
• The Hunter has over 1,000 college student members, a new
popular offering for the region.
• The Art + Issues series grew with this year’s topics including
preserving our natural wilderness, getting to know our least
privileged neighbors, being responsible in a globalized community,
work-life balance, and developing community stories. All past
programs can be viewed on the Hunter YouTube channel.
• UTC faculty in history, literature, music, communications, and art
have integrated visits to the Hunter into their curricula. Presently,
there is a museum studies offering with the art department that
has brought students in to regularly work with the Museum. New
programs offered with UTC experiential learning, non-profit
administration, and Governor’s School are also great
collaborative efforts.
• All-American Summer held 10 performances featuring jazz, blues,
rock (from Southern to Indie), folk, spoken word, country and
bluegrass, thanks to the generous sponsorship of Coca-Cola
Bottling Company of Chattanooga, the NEA, Tennessee American
Water, and Brewer Media. Additionally, the String Theory at the
Hunter chamber series performances were offered through a
great partnership with Lee University.
• College interns and volunteers from the region worked with our
summer camp, in programmatic development and assessment,
as well as visitor experience projects.

Trust and the NEA, the Art Wise Distinguished Lectures at the
Hunter featured great artistic and cultural speakers including
Crystal Bridges Museum President Don Bacigaluppi, glass artist
Paul Stankard, sculptor Albert Paley, and several others. The Art
for Health partnership with Memorial Foundation brought in
Global Alliance for Arts and Health recent executive director Anita
Boles and Robert Lynch, President of the Americans for the Arts.
From Pre-Schoolers finding stories and colors in our collection to
campers performing costumed plays about our collection, our studios
are filled with color and activity.
• The Hunter’s 60th anniversary celebration featured a First Sunday
celebration with Bradley County, a community birthday gathering,
a Bluff historic walking tour, and a culinary treasures program.
