Young Entrepreneurs, Áine Murray & Kaitlin Murray made their TV debut on April 28th last. We saw them go before the five Dragons to make a pitch for a bursary to develop their mini company. Their company is called “Eco Style” and their products are personalised, durable eco friendly bags. Bags cost between €2 and €2.50. Prior to the show they had received an order from a company for 200 bags as well as being approached by some Irish Colleges. They impressed the Dragons with their answers and how they presented their products. Dragon Ramona Nicholas, co-founder of Cara Pharmacy was surprised that she had not thought of the idea herself and was happy to award the bursary of €2,000. This competition is sponsored by Bank of Ireland who praised the girls for their business acumen at their pre -screening launch. As well as reaching the final of Junior Dragons Den Kaitlin & Áine came second in the All Ireland Student Enterprise Competition held in Croke Park on April 17th last. Well done to them. PAGE 1 Fifth Years Visit St. Patricks College, Drumcondra. Eleven students from fifth year were invited to spend the day as a college student in St. Pats College. The eleven students had arranged to meet at 08.30am at the bus stop outside the college. Soon after everyone had arrived we made our way to reception where we had arranged to meet Margaret Brierty. We went to the administration office where we were informed which lectures we would be sitting that day. The first lecture was due to begin at 09.00am sharp. Margaret brought us to the auditorium at the front of the college where we were greeted by the lecturer. We took our seats at the front of the auditorium and waited for the remainder of the students to arrive. This lecture was about literacy. The lecturer had informed us about the topics that would be discussed on the day and advised us to take notes. During the lecture we were being taught how to teach junior and senior infants. We watched a DVD and learned about the classification of words such as Dolch words. On the whole we found this lecture very interesting. After the literacy lecture we meet three first year students. We were divided up into three different groups and we went as a group to a religion lecture. Unfortuntly for us we didn’t learn anything as the year was doing a test. We then had a choice of lectures between music and history. The overall view of both of these lectures was a negative one, as most of the students found it relatively boring. After the music and history lectures had finished, all eleven students went to an English lecture. There we studied poems and were given an insight into the world of English. Once the lectures had come to an end, we met up with members of the Colleges’ Student Union. They were really helpful and informative about the college and they also answered any enquiries that we had. We were then free to go for lunch in the canteen with the rest of the student body. We finished the day with taking pictures around the college. We had a very pleasant day. We discovered what life in college would be like and if we would be suitable to the course. We all found it really helpful and exciting and we hope to be back here someday soon. A new hard backed School Journal is being introduced next year. Leadership Development Programme -Your Turn Project Your Turn is involved with Common Purpose. This is a project designed to make young people innovative, independent leaders. Your Turn challenges young people to think in new ways about the place where they live and the world around them, to examine how decisions are made and see how they can make change happen. Participants examine topical current affairs, community issues and they go into professional environments, to provide advice to businesses and to ask hard hitting questions of community leaders. It is a unique, challenging and fast paced course which raises aspirations, increases confidence and opens minds, both for the young people and adults involved. Your Turn allows young people to develop as leaders in sport, community roles and extracurricular activities, resulting in positive, well informed young people into the school community and beyond. Well done to Danielle White 5th Yr & Niamh Whelan 4th Yr. who were chosen this year. This year students were out collecting and raising money for this worthy association over Happy Heart Weekend which ran from Thursday 9th to Saturday 11th. Well done to all students involved. Indoor Football Tournaments The FAI recently completed a ‘Kick Start 1’ coaching course with the Transition Year students. To receive certification in this course the TY’s will run an Indoor Football competition for the second year students on Wednesday 15th May. The 1st, 3rd and 6th year Inter- Cultural football tournaments were all a great success throughout the year. In their teams all the students completed projects on the different nationalities which are present within each of their year groups. Through this sporting initiative, students get to stay fit and active, have fun and learn about the different cultures within the school. DCU Gym The transition year students completed a five week course in the gym in Dublin City University.
