For this purpose active societies work hard to reach science and technology as they are the only one way to progress, recognizing the values of sustainable development, providing suitable living standard for their citizens to contribute in building a better future for humanity. His Royal Highness Sultan Bin Salman Bin Abdulaziz President of the General Authority for Tourism and Antiquities From the beginning of its foundation by the founder King Abdulaziz Bin Abdulrahman- mercy be upon him- his sons and loyal citizens, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia recognized the importance of science and applying science as it is the real means for building the state and society and for the progress of a strong Saudi nation. When we return back to the stage of the history of the Kingdom from the stage of the Kingdom foundation we understand the shrewd vision and the diligent work to modernize the Saudi society with emphasis on the traditions, inherited morals and values of our society which gave it excellence and pioneer situation. King Abdulaziz opened all the doors of controlled modernization to his country while he was leading the campaigns of national unity taking into consideration that a nation cannot be build by unifying the territories alone but also by re-forming that unity in accordance with the requirements of the modern age. As I am a professional pilot, I followed the strong historical relationship between the Kingdom, aviation and space for all the pas years, as this relationship is the key of boom and progress. It is clear to us this relationship and the brilliant situation of our country with respect to aircrafts industry and its contributions in the national strategy for the development of this kind of industry; and to realize self-sufficiency in the field of industry, amendment and repair of civil and military aircrafts. For instance, the continuous Saudi development plans concentrated on coping with the developments of international industry and opening new horizons in large industries. This clearly appeared since the tend to develop and manufacture helicopters locally was declared after signing a number of memoranda of understanding with specialized international companies, in addition to USA Space Agency (NASA). In this context we should give reference to the activities and programs of King Abdulaziz City for Science & Technology (KCAST), which a public sector city specialized in scientific and technical research established in the late seventies of the last century, 2 ALSALAM HORIZONS / Issue 11 - February 2012 in the field of aviation and space by concentration on important subjects such as land observation, navigation, wiry & wireless communications technology and others. In addition to the developments resulted from these activities which enabled the Kingdom to contribute strongly in space sciences programs and to employ them in the services of transition to electronic government. It is important to mention that the Kingdom adopted a national strategic plan to develop space and aviation industry, to increase and continue cooperation with specialized parties, to purse the national agenda and to realize sustainable development in this sector. In addition to care for academic and scientific fields related to air and space navigation and exchanging knowledge between scientists and engineers on new discoveries in space, technology and its products, as well as discussing ideas ,experiences and developing a high level network of professionals in this field. targets of development and to realize a scientific rise to strengthen the Saudi role locally, continentally and internationally. It is important in this respect to commend the role of late/ Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz- mercy be upon him- for his attention to aviation industry, providing all types of support to build a Saudi aviation industry to serve the targets and policies of the Kingdom. The name of late/ Prince Sultan is connected to this industry for a long time. He provided to it support and care which we is difficult to mention in this short statement for half a century. We should also commend the role of HRH Prince Salman Bin Abdulaziz, the Minister of Defense who accompanied late/ Prince Sultan in his expectations and ambitions as he accompanied him during the period of sickness in consideration to his great national role by giving more strong momentum to this industry. I should also commend the excellent roles of Assalam Aircraft Company in nationalizing aviation technologies in the Kingdom and the region, as well as their good steps in this field, in addition to its distinguished abilities reflected by its success in this field specially in the maintenance of military aircrafts. These achievements reflect what the Kingdom reached in aviation industry. Therefore, we are looking for a united Arabic industry in the field of aircrafts industry which is easy to realize whenever their intent to unify all Arab efforts. We have scientists, potentials, high abilities and the Arab Commission for Industry, as well as the intention to manufacture an excellent product to satisfy our local and regional needs and allows us the opportunity to offer it for export and international competition. PAGE In the same time and according to several fair experts, Saudi aviation engineers proved their competence and high abilities in understanding sophisticated engineering in the field of aviation and they received respect in all scientific forums. This confirms that we are going on in developing air industry to serve the ALSALAM HORIZONS / Issue 11 - February 2012 3 Consolation He passed away, but his virtues and good deeds Remain alive Saturday 22 October 2011 was the date of his departure from this mortal life. On that date the body of late prince Sultan ibn Abdulaziz left, but his memoir will remain alive in the memory of history for a long time. With his death, the Arab and Muslim world have lost a visionary leader, a towering Arab personality and a great philanthropist. He was known for his wisdom, benevolence and philanthropy by everyone. The Royal Court commended Prince Sultan’s contributions toward ensuring the progress and prosperity of the Kingdom:” While conveying its condolences to the Saudi people, we pray to the Almighty that He may bless the late prince with his mercy and forgiveness and admit him to His Paradise and give him the best of rewards for the contributions he made for his religion and nation,” It said in a statement. He visited Alsalam Aircraft Company upon the start of its operations to make sure that the seed he has sown and gave it all his 4 ALSALAM HORIZONS / Issue 11 - February 2012 care and attention was growing well. Nine years after his first visit, the late prince Sultan visited the Company for the second time, particularly in 30 April 2006. The purpose of the visit was to honor the graduation of (167) trainees and to again make sure that strategy to develop self sufficiency in the field of civil and military aircraft maintenance, overhaul and modification through the transfer of technology and the development of Saudi nationals was progressing. So, he was pleased to see that his strategy has resulted in actual achievements on the ground and was very pleased to see the young national cadres have been trained and qualified to work in such sensitive activities of the Company. This was reflected in his speech which included the objectives that have been achieved, his hopes, and visions to advance the development of the aviation industry in the Kingdom. He said “ Not long ago, we used to send our aircraft outside the Kingdom for maintenance, but today we are performing the same work here in Saudi Arabia by Saudis” Then he added “ What makes us more proud is that the aircraft of sister and friendly countries are being sent to us for maintenance, and this proves that you are doing a good job” We still remember his comment when the company presented him a commemorative gift on this occasion “The best gift for me is theses Saudi graduates” May God bless late prince Sulatan and give all the help to his successors; HRH Prince Naif ibn Abdulaziz, Crown Prince, Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister, and HRH Prince Salman ibn Abdulaziz, Minister of Defense and his deputy prince Khalid bin Sultan. We are confidence that the kingdom will continue its strategy toward prosperity and success in the development of the aviation industry in the region.
