® TEACHING ALL KINDS OF MINDS A N O N - P R O F I T I N S T I T U T E F O R T H E U N D E R S TA N D I N G O F D I F F E R E N C E S I N L E A R N I N G Teachers are committed to students and their learning: In 1988, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards set this as the first core proposition of accomplished teaching. Twenty years later, it remains the foundation upon which high quality teaching rests and is the primary reason, according to Public Agenda’s Sense of Calling (2000), people enter the teaching profession. According to this same report, not reaching the students they set out to help is a factor that drives teachers’ decisions to leave the profession. All Kinds of Minds knows teachers are eager to learn how to apply the latest research about learning to help their students achieve. We share their concern about their most vulnerable, struggling students and stand ready to provide breakthrough ideas and solutions to help educators better understand all learners and how their minds vary. All Kinds of Minds is committed to teachers and their learning: Our three-day professional development course involves K-12 educators in exploring the science of learning through academic themes and a better understanding of your learning profile. We begin with identification of educational initiatives or challenges being addressed in your classroom and school. We teach how the mind functions through our framework of eight neurodevelopmental constructs and consider how this new insight can support your classroom and school priorities. As we examine our shared belief that all students can learn, you’ll develop skills to identify strengths and breakdowns in student learning, linking them to a student’s unique learning profile to effectively select strategies to leverage strengths and overcome barriers to learning. With tools and activities for “next day” classroom use, you will have an immediate opportunity to test these new ideas where it truly matters—in your classroom, with the students you are committed to helping find success. Experience the Teaching All Kinds of Minds workshop: Our promise to you: Expert All Kinds of Minds facilitators from our national faculty—experienced educators like you—guide your learning journey, which can take place over three consecutive days or in three one-day sessions that fit your school calendar. We’ve designed this 18-hour course to align with National Staff Development Council Standards, so it meets the expectations you have for high-quality, job-embedded professional development. You’ll learn with a cohort of your colleagues, and together we will focus on: At the end of the course, you will have: • Using the All Kinds of Minds approach to support students’ uniquely wired minds to help you create a constructive learning environment. • Developing your knowledge of eight neurodevelopmental constructs using “layperson” terminology and accessible content, providing a window into how you and your students are wired to learn. • Integrating this neurodevelopmental approach with academic themes relevant to your educational practice. • Guided practice on how to adapt instruction based on neurodevelopmental demands of an academic task, students’ learning profiles, and your own learning profile. • Case studies and activities to demonstrate how to observe and describe students’ learning profiles and implement targeted solutions. • Selecting strategies and resources for immediate classroom use with both individuals and groups of students. • Knowledge of the neurodevelopment constructs that helps you understand learning and its variations. • New ideas and tools—including a participant workbook and access to online resources—to increase your sense of efficacy as you work with diverse learners. • A common language about learners and learning to use with colleagues, students, and families, which allows conversations about student learning challenges to move beyond labeling. • Instructional strategies that leverage student strengths and interests while addressing weakness to help you manage students’ learning differences in a hopeful and optimistic plan. • Opportunities to continue your learning through modules from our Tools for Learning Success Catalog, which will deepen your neurodevelopmental content knowledge, support your classroom implementation, and support peer networking opportunities through Professional Learning Communities. © 2008 All Kinds of Minds. RUTH ANN ERDNER, ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT, ENID ‘‘ – HEATHER SPARKS, TEACHER, TAFT MIDDLE SCHOOL, OKLAHOMA CITY & OKLAHOMA TEACHER OF THE YEAR 2009 The All Kinds of Minds workshop was one of the most in-depth, re-energizing experiences we have had. Teachers learn how to build on strengths to improve academic growth. As administrators, the information is useful in dealing and understanding behavior issues. ‘‘ – TERESA JACKSON, PRINCIPAL, CENTRAL MIDDLE SCHOOL, LAWTON Millions of students will struggle in school today. Thanks to Oklahoma’s commitment to education, thousands of students won’t have to. Programs from All Kinds of Minds, including the renowned Schools Attuned program, give teachers research-based knowledge and tools to help students who struggle to learn. Thanks to a decade of support from the State of Oklahoma, more than 4,500 educators in more than 650 schools and 250 districts have participated in Schools Attuned and other professional development programs from All Kinds of Minds. Through this partnership with the OK State Department of Education, students and educators in classrooms across Oklahoma are reclaiming hope and confidence. ‘‘ I met with a parent of a 5th grader who was having trouble writing for the 5th grade writing test practice. Drawing on my Schools Attuned training, I was able to suggest some interventions; on the day of the test, he wrote like he had never written before. This approach helps build a team (school, parents, and student) to understand why a student is struggling and how to overcome weaknesses. ‘‘ All Kinds of Minds’ approach is fully implemented in Enid Public Schools. …Results from criterioned referenced tests have increased significantly for students; and the district’s secondary schools have witnessed a drop in school suspensions and fewer disciplinary referrals. ‘‘ ‘‘ ‘‘ I feel so fortunate to be an Oklahoma teacher who has benefited from the work of All Kinds of Minds. Teaching is an absolute joy knowing I’m armed with the knowledge I need to truly make a difference for all my students! – P. DAVID SHOUSE, JR., PRINCIPAL, IRVING ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, MUSKOGEE ® A N O N - P R O F I T I N S T I T U T E F O R T H E U N D E R S TA N D I N G O F D I F F E R E N C E S I N L E A R N I N G ‘‘ All Kinds of Minds’ programs provide teachers with the tools to actually identify students’ mental processing strengths, and then to provide specifically designed instruction that aligns with those strengths. Finally, teachers can be successful with the students who were previously unable to benefit from basic traditional instruction. It is truly a real “win-win” solution for schools striving to make a difference by providing quality instruction to every child, everyday! ‘‘ –MARVIN H. For example: • Students taught by teachers using All Kinds of Minds programs demonstrated solid course grade improvements in reading (59% improvement), language arts (57% improvement) and mathematics (47% improvement). • Teachers reported increases in their ability to create educational plans and select strategies to improve academic achievement of their students. Schools Attuned trained teachers were statistically significantly more likely to initiate assistance or help to students, provide clear expectations to students, encourage active participation from all, and better manage disruptions in the classroom. • Schools implementing Schools Attuned concepts and practices saw decreases of 50% or more in special education referrals and increases of 30% or more in referral accuracy rates. Students in Oklahoma Need Teachers Who Understand How They Learn • In today’s competitive economy, Oklahoma can’t afford to let any students fail to reach their full promise. Programs like those from All Kinds of Minds, which provide educators with professional knowledge drawn from the latest research on learning and neuroscience, are essential to preparing all students to meet the demands of the 21st century. • All Kinds of Minds programs build the capacity of teachers and schools to achieve better results with the resources they have and with other programs and initiatives they are implementing. Developing teachers’ effectiveness in reaching the 20 percent of students who struggle academically helps protect the dollars that are invested in educating those students — an estimated $1 billion in Oklahoma — and helps decrease the social and economic costs associated with students who become disengaged and drop out of school. • Oklahoma’s investment in Schools Attuned serves as a national model for how a state can ensure its educators have access to cutting-edge, research-based professional development that equips them to better understand and manage student learning differences.
