Summer2012 - Horse Protection Association of Florida
Number 1 2012 Newsletter New Matching Gift Challenge Thank You to everyone who helped the horses! You came through for the horses in December and created a miracle. With funds about to run out, donations and grants that came in during the Matching Gift Challenge allowed HPAF to operate through May of 2012. Spring donations and grants brought in funds that will enable HPAF to operate through the end of August. We are so grateful for all you wonderful, caring people who donated for the horses. Once again, our dear friend who has done so much for the horses and prefers to remain anonymous because she is humble as well as generous, has offered another Matching Gift Challenge and will match all donations through July 30th up to $10,000. Your matching donations will make it possible for HPAF to continue helping the horses. ~New Rescues~ Caleigh Feb. 29, 2012 Caleigh May 11, 2012 Delilah Dec. 27, 2011 Delilah April 25, 2012 Crescent Moon Feb. 23, 2012 Crescent Moon May 11, 2012 Executive Director A Special Thank You Board of Directors To those who made an outstandingcontribution since the last newsletter Morgan Silver Lynn S. Thank you to Sponsors: Dan’s Feed in Umatilla, Southern States Feed, and Tractor Supply in Eustis for their donations. ~ Polo in May ~ Prior to the scheduled trial, Assistant State Attorney Darla Whistler announced that Defendant Chris Brown plead to felony animal cruelty charges and was adjudicated guilty in the case involving Polo, the Thoroughbred mare who was found emaciated and near death last July in Chiefland, Florida. Horse Protection Association of Florida worked with the Levy County Sheriff’s Office and the Assistant State Attorney Ms. Whistler to prepare this case for trial. This adjudication of felony animal cruelty is precendent setting for prosecution of the starvation of a horse which involved a repeated, long-term failure to provide feed for Polo. This resulted in excessive or repeated infliction of unnecessary pain and suffering of the mare. The Defendant avoided possible jail time by taking the plea agreement and was sentenced to five years probation. Brown will not be allowed to own or keep any animals, domestic or livestock, during this probationary period. Our deepest thanks to Assistant State Attorney Darla Whistler of the Eighth Judicial Circuit’s Levy County State Attorney’s Office in Bronson for her successful prosecution of this case for felony animal cruelty. July 22, 2011 May 22, 2012 Polo is happy, healthy and thriving at the HPAF farm in Micanopy. Dear Morgan, I have not had a chance to write since we have been back home, you see how busy those girls keep me. I just wanted to tell you and your staff what an amazing time we had. Thank you for all of your time you devoted to us. How is everyone doing? The girls ask often and show pictures of Buzzy and wonder how he is. Taylynn really liked him. How is Delilah? It’s amazing how my girls tell and show everyone the pictures and the way they brag about the horses, it is like they have known them for a long time. You have an amazing place and I pray for you to continue to be blessed with donations on a regular basis. I have spoken with several adults and they would like to come up with us one weekend. If you will have us again, we will work hard for you to get some more chores done to help out. Take care and I can’t wait to see you guys again. The Williamson Family, Tiffany, Shane, Taylynn, age 11, and Laykin, age 6. (The Williams Family spent a week at HPAF for a working vacation.) Thank you sponsors! The horses love you! My mom found your farm. She told me about what you do and I thought it was a wonderful thing for you to do for these poor sweet horses, ponies and donkeys. So I wanted to donate to your farm instead of getting presents. Lots of people at my birthday donated, I am so, so., so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so glad they did. I know it is helping lots of horses/animals out in the world who need the help a lot more than any of us. i think what your farm is doing is super great. I am so glad you are doing what you are doing now. Thank you for doing what you are doing. Thank you and keep up the great work. You are wonderful. Teah E. Wilson Thank You Teah for helping the horses, you are a remarkable young lady! A Very Special Thank You to the Arredondo Dressage Society for holding the 3rd Annual Horses Helping Horses benefit for HPAF on April 15th, 2012 at the Canterbury Equestrian Showplace in Newberry. We cannot adequately express our gratitude for all of the people who gave their time and energy to make this event a huge success resulting in a wonderful donation for the horses. “IN MEMORY OF” Pat Trapp & Gale Dressler...................Don & Gail Schroeder Wayne Walker................................................Marianne Scholer Genevieve Herrick............................................Susan Azevedo Charlie Phillips..........................................Margaret McFarland Jerry Johnson, Jr. .......................................... Murphy David & Glenna Ware ************************************** A bequest in your will or living trust is an uncomplicated way to help protect horses. By including HPAF in your estate plans, you can leave a legacy memorializing a lifetime of compassion for horses In Memory of Ora Evola (as remembered by her dear friend and investment advisor Diana Williams with Merrill Lynch) Ora was born in Ontario, Canada. She eventually moved to Florida and settled on a little farm in Dunnellon when she retired with a horse, a cow, some chickens and a dog. she always loved animals, especially dogs and horses. She used to ride horses as a child and always said, “You can tell a lot about a person by the way they treat animals!” Ora discovered she was terminally ill earlier this year, and she wanted in some way to make a difference by promoting animal wellness. while reviewing her estate plan, she mentioned that she would love to help some local organizations. Fortunately, we had recently read an article in the newspaper about the positive impact from Horse Protection. Just like Ora, always wanting to help those that need it most, she decided this was a place that would put some money to practical, good use. Ora passed away in early April at the age of 81. She was a little woman with a big heart! She would be proud to know you appreciate her kindness! Our deepest appreciation to Ms Evola for her bequest to HPAF. Her thoughtfulness and caring has made a huge impact on the lives of so many horses. Thank You to my Parents Many of you have not had the pleasure of meeting my parents Robert and Doris Silver who live in Miami and have been married for 63 years. The support they gave me allowed me to pursue my dream of working with horses. My mother, a journalist and writer, gave me an affinity for reading and writing that enables me to write about the horses. Not to mention driving me back and forth to the stables daily and helping me at shows during my youth. She made sure that I was able to have the horses that she wanted but could never have as a girl. When I left the horse show world and became aware of neglect and abuse to horses, the horsemanship I learned in my earlier career gave me the skills necessary to help the starved and neglected horses. My father, who was the youngest B17 Bomber Squadron Leader in WWII is the person who mails out most of the Thank You letters for Horse Protection Association of Florida. HPAF exists today and has grown for the past 22 years only because of my father. It was his support that allowed me to start and develop HPAF. It was in great part his financial support that kept HPAF going in the early years. He did all of the office and financial work for the first ten years which was no easy task. He has been a board member, grant writer, PR person, and my support for 22 years; always there and ready to help It is only because of my parents that HPAF exists and so many horses have been helped over the past 22 years and for that I am eternally grateful. Jamie on Rainy Diana on Olivia HPAF is pleased to welcome a new trainer at the farm. Jamie Chadwick has joined the HPAF team after taking part in the February Martin Black Colt Starting that twenty HPAF horses attended. Trainer Diana Griffis is also at the HPAF farm part time and is getting some of the younger and new horses started in training. Now the youngsters and difficult horses are finally getting the training and miles that they need to help them become more adoptable. Victoria September 23, 2011 February 23, 2012 The American School of Equine Dentistry was at the HPAF farm for the second year. The dental students and their instructors floated the teeth of 38 horses. Many of the young horses had their wolf teeth extracted and some of the old horses had their geriatric mouths helped!
