f you have walk down the
hallway by Ms. Safah and
Ms. Manabat’s rooms, you
can see a big window, and in
the window, you can see a
small garden.
Many students believe
that this garden belongs to
Ms. Manabat’s class. This
garden actually started by
Ms. Ritter during this past
summer with her daughter,
who is a Girl Scout. Ms.
Ritter spoke to Ms. Manabat
and Dr. Appell to get permission to have a garden.
Now, this fall, the garden belongs to Ms. Ritter’s
third-grade class in room 9.
Ms. Ritter has been teaching
for 2 years in FDR, and this
will be her 3rd year.
Ms. Ritter planted this
garden for 3 reasons: it
helps her students become
interested in health; it is fun
to watch the life cycle take
place; and it is very relaxing. Ms. Ritter has a lot of
experience in gardening.
She start gardening when
she was three years old
when she made mud pies.
As she got older, she would
help her parents with their
yard work. After she got her
own house, she planted her
very own garden, which is a
flower garden.
This new garden at FDR
is for veggies and flowers.
Ms. Ritter is hoping to plant

ave you heard of our
fifth grade teacher,
Mrs. Muir? Well some of
you might think that you do
not know who this very special person is, but you might
have known her as Ms. Summers before.
Mrs. Muir always notices
something different about her
students that . She notices
their personalities and what
makes each of them special.
Have you ever asked
yourself what your teacher’s
dream job would be if it was
not teaching? Mrs. Muir says
her next dream job would be
judging on the television
show, The Voice.
Mrs. Muir was inspired
by her mom, who is an amazing math teacher, and by
helping her son Miles read.

FDR Elementary and RAP —Where Children Learn
By Stephanie M.
A
t FDR Elementary,
students do math, reading, writing, art, and also do
free play.
The best part is that students have RAP, a program
where RAP program leaders
help with homework and run
fun activities with teamwork.
For example, Ms. Melissa
does duct tape activities
where students make flowers, plants, and wallets. RAP
provides students with assemblies, clubs, discovery science, and give students
snacks.
The part that many students like most about RAP is
Pressfriends because they get
to write, have field trips, and
get snacks. Students get better at writing, and articles go
in a newspaper.
Students learn to be
more responsible when FDR
School teaches them to
keep the cafeteria and bathrooms clean to make them
nice for everyone. Students
can also learn that if they
don’t do what they are supposed to do, there are consequences, and they learn to try
their best.
FDR is a school where kids
can get smarter and more creative, so they will do well in
middle school.
Mix-and-Match Friday
By Alyza and Devinia
M
ix and Match Friday
is your day to be creative! Mix your day with mine
and save the half to match
with someone else.
This one day event was
amazing. For one day, students were allowed to come
to school dressed very silly.
If you had come to FDR Elementary when we had Mix
and Match day, you would be
able to see all of the funny and
beautiful mix and matches.
Both FDR North and
South celebrated Mix and
Match Day. Mixed and
Matched students were everywhere! Teachers and students
were mixed and matched all
over! Seeing all the teachers
participating along with FDR
students was very funny and
very fun..
There were many creative
students who took part in this
exciting day. For example,
some students wore two different pairs of shoes and socks.
Others wore their shirts and
jackets backwards.
October’s Mix and Match
day was a success, and students at FDR can't wait for
the next fun Friday in store
for them. 
Halloween—The Scariest Time of the Year
By Maria

alloween is the scariest
time of the year. People
all over the world celebrate
Halloween. They celebrate
Halloween just for fun.
Here are some tips to prepare for Halloween next year.
First, never take a bunch of
candy. If it says, "please take
one," it might be a trick.
Second, never take candy
on Halloween from strangers.
Third, if you are going to
throw a Halloween party,

Handball—A Handy Game
By Liyoka
S
tudents at FDR Elementary School love to play
handball.
Handball is a very hard
game, because people sometimes invent their own rules
and it is really tiring to play.
People go hard on each
other by hitting with lots of
power.
The people who get the
ball make the rules. Some
such rules are three bounces,
combos, and one catchy.
Three
bounces
means you have to
let the ball bounce
three times before
hitting it while
folding their hands.
A combo is bouncing the ball then hitting it
with two fists. And a catchy
is when a ball is about to go
over somebody's head, then
they catch it instead.
People fold their hands to
hit the ball. Then the other
person tries to hit
the ball.
Students at FDR
play on the playground. Some kids
play at recess and
lunch.
Handball is a very fun
game. Everyone should try
it! People lose the game
when they miss the ball, but
even when people lose, they
always want to keep playing
the game!
FC Barcelona—Soccer Superstars

occer is an amazing
sport. It is so popular
that every country has their
own soccer league.
One well-known team is
FC Barcelona. The full name
of FC Barcelona is Futbol
Club Barcelona.
This amazing team was
founded November 29, 1899,
so it was established
one hundred and fifteen years ago. FC
Barcelona was founded
in Spain, and this team
competes with all the
European
soccer
teams.
FC Barcelona has
two well known players, who are considered
Page 4
to be the best players in the
team. One of the best players
is Lionel Messi. He was born
on June 24, 1987. He comes
from Argentina, but Barcelona recruited him for their
club. Messi has scored 381
goals and holds the record
for most goals scored.
The second best player is
Neymar da Silva Santos Jr.
Neymar da Silva Santos Junior. He was born on February
5, 1992, he comes from Brazil. He was also recruited by
FC Barcelona.
FC Barcelona has two
different jerseys. One of the
jerseys is yellow and blue,
and the other one is orange.
When they play home games
they wear the yellow
and blue jerseys and
for away games they
wear the orange jerseys. A third color is
yellow.
They are such a
great team that they
have earned fourteen

Why Should We Recycle
By Ashley
H
ere are five of the top
reasons to recycle:
First, recycling helps keep
our community safe and
clean.
Second, you can set an
example for younger students
and teach them how to take
care of our beautiful planet.
Another reason is to protect our ocean from glass,
plastic, and aluminum cans.
The fourth reason is to
respect animal life, human
life, and the soil.
Last but not least, do not
throw away batteries. This is
very harmful to the environ-
ment!!!!! How else can you
help save our environment?
You can help by picking up
trash at school and making
sure not to drop trash at
school or outside of school.
You can ride your bicycle or
walk to school. IT’S FUN
TO RECYCLE! 
have short hair in our school,
but not every boy is like
Abraham. Some boys style
their hair differently. Anthony, another 3rd grader
from Mrs. Manalang’s class,
uses gel and figures out a
way to have a wavy look.
Girls are different than
boys, and a lot of girls like
having long hair, like Abigail.
She is a 3rd grader in Ms.
Alcazar’s class. Abigail likes
having long hair because she
can have a braided pony tail,
and sometimes has pig tails.
Some girls have short
hair, but usually not very
short. Most of them have
their hair to their shoulders or
below their shoulders. Sade,
a 3rd grade girl, has short
hair. She likes having short
hair, because short hair does
not make her hot when she is
active outside. She loves
having different styles of
pony tails, from the back to
the side and up top.
Every one does there hair
styles differently; how do
you style your hair? 
All About Hair
By Joaquin
H
air is everywhere! You
have it long or short,
and it can be braided, curly,
and spiky. Some people can
be creative they have there
hair in special ways, some
have pony tails.
Students at FDR are all
different when they style
there hair. Abraham, a 3rd
grader in Mrs. Silpia's class,
likes having short hair. He
usually wakes up and combs
it every morning, but at the
end of the day it is a mess.
There are many boys that
Halloween (continued from page 3)
plan some games or else you
are going to end up with a
boring party. If you want to
make a haunted house, plan
ahead and you might want to
buy spider webs, which make
the house look cool.
Fourth, don't let people
take away your Halloween
candy.
Fifth, always go trick or
treating with a parent or an
older brother/sister. It is always fun traveling with a
group.
Sixth, don't forget to
share your candy.
Lastly, HAVE FUN!

Great Adventures at Adventure City
By Mitsael
A
Adventure City is located at
1238 S Beach Blvd, Anaheim,
CA 92804.
dventure City is the
best theme park because is all about fun and
nature.
The only times you can
visit this theme park is during
the weekends, but during the
summer they are open weekdays. They usually open
around 11-8 on Saturdays,
and 11-7 on Sundays.
Adventure City has its
own petting zoo like hens,
sheep, goats, and turtles.
This theme park, is kind of
small but it has a lot of rides
to explore. Dropzone is exciting because you go up
high, and you can see cars
driving by, then you have to
prepare yourself to be
dropped. The air balloons go
around slow, then they go
faster and faster. The horse
ride goes fast, then goes
slower.
There are restaurants that
serve pizza, icees, sandwiches, and hamburgers.
Adventure City is a great
theme park to go with your
family or to throw a birthday
party.
You can find Adventure
City in the city of Anaheim,
right here in California. So if
you’re looking for a small
but very fun theme park give
Adventure City a chance. 

Winter Meets Hope in Dolphin Tale 2
By Saja
T
he Dolphin Tale 2
movie is a great movie
to watch with your family,
but a better book to read.
Dolphin Tale 2 has some
funny moments, especially
with the seagull. This is an
amazing book that is all about
how Winter, the dolphin, met
the dolphin Hope.
Winter is lonely and sad
because she is the only dolphin in the aquarium. That
soon all ends when Mandy, a
dolphin, comes into Winter's
life. Winter and Mandy have
fun together, but Mandy soon
leaves. Once again Winter is
lonely with no animal of her
own kind.
Winter's human friend
Sawyer is willing to do anything to see Winter happy.
Winter and Sawyer are
friends, and like real friends
they have their problems. To
make matters worse, Sawyer
has to leave with one of his
friend's dad for a while.
Hope is found on the
beach, and when Hope is
allowed to be with Winter,
they become the best of
friends. Hope and Winter
have a lot of things in common.
You can find out how the
story ends by watching the
movie or reading the book
Dolphin Tale 2. You can find
this book at the Lawndale
library. 

mom and from reading to her
son. Her students are glad she
was inspired to be a teacher
by her mom and her son, because she is a great teacher
and we wish we could stay
with her forever.
Mrs. Muir is the best. She
always takes time to prepare
for her class so that it can be
the best that she can make it
She is easygoing, but
wants her students to behave,
so they can have a good experience in her class and get

eter Parker makes his
return in The Amazing
Spiderman 2, the role of Peter Parker/Spiderman is still

This time Spiderman
faces three villains. The
Green Goblin, who is played
by Dane Dehann, who was a
long time friend of Peter.
Electro, who received his
powers from a very bad accident, is played by Jamie
Foxx, and Rhino. In this
movie, Rhino is really different; Rhino is played by
Paul Giamatti.
Spiderman also faces
troubles with his personal
life; he has to choose
whether he wants to stay
friends with Gwen Stacy.
Peter (or as he is also known
as Spiderman) was told to
stay away from Gwen, and
he is also asking himself if
he should give up being Spiderman.

amazing movie at Red Box.
It is great movie for the

All About Liv and Maddie
By Jasmine R.
H
ave you ever wondered
how it would be like to
have a twin sister? Liv and
Maddie is a show for kids.
The star of the show is
Dove Cameron. She plays the
part of both twins, Liv and
Maddie. They are very funny
and different. Liv loves playing sports like basketball, it is
her favorite. Maddie is in "all
that person." She loves fashion.
The show takes place at a
high school and in Liv and
Maddie's house.
There are three reasons
why Liv and Maddie is a
great show. First, the show
can be very funny, like in the
episode when Maddie tries to
get Liv to be like her, but it
doesn’t work out.
Another reason is that the
show deals with what high
school is all about.
The final reason is that
they fight but they work it
out, like real sisters would.
People who would like
this show are mostly girls,
but this show can be watched
by your entire family including boys.
Liv and Maddie was created by John Beck. You can
see this show on Disney
Channel. They show reruns
every day. 

een Titans Go is a PGrated animated action
comedy. Five teenagers fight

Beast Boy who has the powers to turn into different animals is voiced by Greg Cipes. Khary Payton is the

Strong. Hyden Walch is the

out in their awesome tower,
which is shaped like the letter "T". The show shows how
immature teenagers can be.
In one episode, Cyborg creates a double of himself because he did not want to play
a dangerous game with his
friend Bestboy.
Boys and girls will find
this show funny, cool, and
surprising. The show is only
11 minutes long, and you can
see new episodes every Thursday on Cartoon Network. No
wonder why many students
in FDR love Thursdays.
Alyza, a 4th grader in Ms.
Manabat’s class, really likes
Teen Titans Go, because it is
funny and she loves watching the re-runs on the weekends with her family. 

The Scoop on Becky G.
By Jatoi G.
B
ecky G is a American
singer, rapper, and
dancer from Inglewood,
California. Her real name is
Rebbeca Marie Gomez.
She is a seventeen-yearold singer who has made
remixes of a lot of different
songs.
Becky has two brothers,
Frankie Gomez and Alex
Gomez. She started going on
singing auditions at the age
of nine, but every time she
was shut down. The rejections made her lose confidence.
Becky was experimenting
with rap at the age of twelve
and found her destiny. She
started posting mixes of
cover songs on YouTube.
Becky later put these covers
into her first full-length project with mixtape.
Becky G has worked with
top artists like Kesha and
Cody Simpson. She was fea-
tured on the Cher Lloyd's
single "Oath and Magik 2.0"
with Austin Mahone.
Becky G really did not
know what she wanted to do
as an up and coming singer.
She tried hip-hop, country
music, and Spanish music.
Her debut album was
“Play It Again,” and her latest song is called "Shower".
Becky G’s journey to the
top of the charts still continues. 
Megastar Iggy Azalea
By Stacie
A
methyst Amelia Kelly
is better known as Iggy
Azalea. She is at the top of
just about ALL the pop and
hip-hop charts.
This megastar was born
in Sydney, Australia. That’s
right, this rapper is NOT
American. She is the most
recent great non-American
rapper since the rapper
Drake, who is Canadian.
In February this year,
Iggy Azalea released her
single “Fancy” featuring
Charli XCX, an artist new to
the music world. People
everywhere were singing this
extremely catchy song and it
reached the top of the charts.
In April of this year, her
debut album, “The New Classic,” was released and was a
top selling debut album.
Iggy has worked with T.I,
Ariana Grande and Rita Ora.
This megastar is currently
working with JLo on the new
song ''Booty'.'
Iggy is 24 and surprisingly her favorite color is
purple. Before Iggy was a
solo artist, she planned to
start a girl group like TLC.
Iggy Azalea is very popular and talented singer.

Shadow v. Sonic
By Ethan T.
A
character in the Sonic
series
is
named
Shadow. Shadow is a hardcore hedgehog who uses different tools, a motorcycle,
and a buggy. Shadow is
mainly seen as a bad guy in
the Sonic games.
In the Sonic game,
Shadow the hedgehog has 11
story lines. Each storyline
leads to another. You can
change certain missions in
the story line so you can
multi-task.
In the game the point is to
find Shadow's true past because his mind was erased.
Shadow faces a lot of
characters in the game, and
many of them try to change
Shadow’s future.
This game is only one
player for the story line,
while the multiplayer is for
two players.
In multiplayer, you get to
battle your friends and the
only character you can use is
Shadow.
The graphics in this game
are amazing for its time,
since the game is kind of old.
You can currently play
this game Xbox, Playstation
2, and GameCube. These
gaming platforms are a little
old, but this game is worth
playing. You may be able to
find the older Sonic games
online.
Shadow also pops up in
as a minor character in some
Nintendo games like Super
Smash Brothers. 
Thumbs Up for Video Games
By Kai
T
here are many people
out there who will tell
you that video games don't
teach you anything. These
people might be grownups.
Well it all up to you decide if they are right or
wrong! For example the
Mario Kart games by Nintendo are go-kart racing
games. They teach you how
to have quick reflexes when
you are driving one of the
cars in the game.
Racing games are also
good for helping you use
your imagination to get
through all kinds of obstacles. Asphalt racing games
are also car racing games that
can help you learn to have
quick reactions that maybe
will help you when you are
able to drive.
There are also games that
allow you to explore your
imagination. One game is
Asphalt, in this game there
are a lot of balancing activities, and you have to get
through all kinds of obstacles.
Another amazing game is
Minecraft. In this game, you
can build a lot of different
buildings using cubes and
play games..
Video games have
changed; they are not silly
and a waste of time. They
can teach kids a lot of different things and improve their
computer skills.

RAP Roundup
By Abraham Hernandez, RAP Program Leader and Roosevelt Times Advisor
H
ello and greetings to
everyone reading this
year’s first Roosevelt Times
of the 2014-2015 school
year. All of the students who
took part in making this
newspaper possible worked
really hard. This Roosevelt
Times would have not been
possible without our mentors
from PressFriends. PressFriends has continued to support these students to take the
time to brainstorm ideas, and
motivate these students to
write.
FDR RAP can’t wait till
2015. The New Year will
bring a lot of new and
exciting activities. RAP
will begin planning for
the Lawndale parade, and
like every year, RAP will
be providing some performances.
New clubs will be
starting in 2015 for those
students in FDR South. Your
program leaders will be offer
8 different clubs. All of this
clubs are very interesting and
fun. You can choose from
Fantasy Battle Trading
Cards, Basketball, Softball,
The R.A.P Factor, Origami,
Weird Science, Rock! Paper!
Scissors!, and Rockband.
For those students in FDR
North, you will get to choose
from Mad Science, Duct
Tape, and Color Guard.
Even though we have to
say good-bye to 2014, 2015
will bring new and wonderful
adventures.

hanks to all the reporters
on the Roosevelt Times
who did such a great job in
putting together your school
newspaper.
We hope that anyone who
is interested in writing for the

new year. We have our annual conference coming up in
March, and have plans for a
fun field trip next year.
None of this would be
possible without all the work

We really appreciate all the
help and time that Mr. Abraham puts into your school
newspaper.
Thanks too to Ms. Elena

program for the school district.
And a special thank you to
Dr. Appell for her support of
the Roosevelt Times and
PressFriends.
Did you know that this is
our seventh year with FDR
Elementary? We started with
FDR in 2008 and have published 15 issues of the Roosevelt Times.
We hope that everyone has
a very happy holiday season,
and the holiday break is a
great time to start keeping a
journal as your New Year’s
resolution!
Happy holidays and happy
new year from all of us at
PressFriends. 
