the festival guide - The Pygmalion Festival
MUSIC
In 1989, Champaign-Urbana lost the presence of Josh Gottheil when he passed away from
lymphoma at the age of 19. When he was just 16 years old, Josh began bringing to town touring
bands, such as The Flaming Lips, Big Black, and the Pixies, as a promoter for local venues like
Mabel’s, Trito’s Uptown, and the Channing-Murray Foundation. At a young age, Josh was becoming one of Champaign-Urbana’s greatest cultural ambassadors. He was at the center of a burgeoning local music scene that included established bands like the Didjits, The Outnumbered,
and The Elvis Brothers, and would eventually include the likes of Poster Children, HUM, The
Moon Seven Times, Braid, Menthol, and many more talented groups signed to big record labels.
By the time another of those local bands, American Football, one of the headliners of this year’s
Pygmalion Festival, released their critically acclaimed debut in 1999 on local upstart Polyvinyl
Records, the nationwide reputation of the Champaign-Urbana music scene had been firmly
secured. It is because of ambitious people like Josh, artists like American Football, record labels
like Polyvinyl, and fans like you that such a scene exists in Champaign-Urbana and that today, 25
years after Josh’s death, we are able to present the 10th edition of the Pygmalion Festival.
We genuinely feel as though this year we’ve knocked one out of the park with our line-up. Whether you are looking to catch one of the biggest artists on the festival circuit, CHVRCHES; dive into
the newest collection of songs from the heralded Real Estate; dance your ass off to XXYYXX;
throw yourself into the pit at Deafheaven; or listen intently to Sun Kil Moon in one of the most
acoustically perfect concert spaces in the world at Krannert Center, there are plenty of opportunities to remind yourself of why music matters so much in our daily lives.
Of course, we cannot create an exciting festival like this without a lot of help. In fact, it took more
than sixty sponsors to afford such a talented bill. Please thank our sponsors, either with your
words or with your patronage. Through their support, the Pygmalion Festival has become one of
the cultural cornerstones in our community—alongside events like Roger Ebert’s Film Festival,
the Illinois Marathon, and Krannert Center’s Ellnora: The Guitar Festival—that set Champaign-Urbana apart from the average Midwestern college town.
Hosting this festival in a small city allows us to offer concert-goers a unique experience that
can’t be had at most other festivals: from perfect sight lines to the short beer lines, Pygmalion
turns everything that you've come to expect from a festival on its head. We offer you the kind of
comfort, intimacy, and affordability that can only come from the scale of the surroundings. Under
this ideal setting, we can carefully curate a festival like no other.
Thank you for being a part of it.
— SETH FEIN: FESTIVAL FOUNDER AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR
The 2014 Pygmalion Festival is dedicated to the memory and honor of Josh Gottheil.

LITERATURE
Champaign-Urbana is a literary town. With authors as influential as Iris Chang, Roger Ebert, and
David Foster Wallace hailing from C-U, and the University of Illinois attracting so many other
tremendous writers, this much is undeniable. As such, my partner, Jodee Stanley and I worked
very hard this year to bring together an exciting mix of local, university-affiliated and alumni
authors to read alongside a diverse cross-section of prominent writers from across the country. We’re particularly proud to present two McSweeney’s Voice of Witness authors in Audrey Petty
and Lannan Literary Fellow Peter Orner. Petty, who published The Highrise Stories this year, is a
former faculty member at Illinois who spent countless hours interviewing people who lived in
housing projects in Chicago helping them craft stories in a volume that has, during its short time
in publication, become required reading for those interested in its purview. We’re also pleased to
feature Matthew Gavin Frank, an Illinois graduate and author of the beautiful, oddly personal
book-length essay, Preparing the Ghost. Another notable alum, Ted Sanders, author of The Keepers, will read alongside NAACP Image Award finalist Jamaal May and Kundiman Fellow Tarfia
Faizullah on Friday evening at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts’ Stage 5.
Over the weekend, check out the Pygmalion Book Fair, held on Saturday afternoon at The Esquire
Lounge where you can meet the people behind groundbreaking and prestigious presses like
Hobart, Spork, POETRY, Curbside Splendor, The Pitchfork Review, Ninth Letter, and many others.
After that, join us on a Lit Crawl featuring small press-curated readings across downtown before
hitting Mike N Molly’s to see Timothy Denevi read with Jennifer Percy and Richard Siken, whose
Lambda Literary Award winning poetry collection, Crush, has proven to be one of the most influential collections of the past ten years. Later on, check out authors like Scott McClanahan, Alissa
Nutting, and Aaron Burch, who completed his MFA at Illinois and will read from his new collection, Backswing, alongside musician and author George Clarke of the band Deafheaven.
We’re honored to celebrate C-U’s literary culture with such amazing authors. We welcome you to
join us.

MADE
The Made Fest was founded in 2013 based on a simple idea: design a handmade + vintage fest
for Champaign-Urbana that would really speak to the community's creative class, the college
youth, and the lively attendees of The Pygmalion Festival. In its first year, it was a great way for
our national sellers to connect with other artists, musicians, and authors along with the rich
culture of local shops and artisans. Most of all, we were wanting to inspire people to buy and
support independent and locally made goods, whether they are native to our community or to
another. With over 40 vendors lined up for this year’s festival, and taking place over the course of
two days, we are only too excited to share its growth with you during The Pygmalion Festival.
