There is something Friday, June 24 Rabbi Frederick H. Reeves about holding a new baby which is an overwhelming expeShabbat Service 6:00 pm rience, and this one was very new - only about 14 hours Saturday, June 25 old! She was snuggly and warm, and she had that new baby smell - a mix of hospital linen, fresh Shabbat Chapel Service with Temple B'nei Mitzvah skin, and endless possibilities. Service Streamed Live from Israel 10:30 am As anyone who has been with a new baby will tell you, you can spend hours doing nothing but stare at that cute little face. And while you are doing so, it is natural to start imagining what that * Summer Shabbat Socializing begins June 10. child’s life might be like. As it turns out, there are a number of significant events, occurring simulJoin us every Friday at 5:30 pm. taneously with Hadara’s birth, which might also lead one to imagine what the future holds. For instance, we have just learned of the killing of Osama bin Laden. A study has been released indicating the ice in the polar regions is melting faster than has been previously thought. Last week there were more tornados in one day than ever before. We are also facing a political impasse, as our government tries to manage the unbelievable deficits threatening to cripple our country. It is almost enough to despair for the future. The tendency among some in our country is to assume we are at the end of the world, and they are not only from neighboring religious traditions. On the one hand, I can understand the appeal of thinking we are nearing the end. The accumulation of catastrophe in such a scenario would be a positive sign - the worse the world gets, the closer we are to the end. Not only would the end of the world remove the overwhelming responsibilities we face, it also promises to bring an existence full of peace and plenty. Throughout the history of Judaism, there have regularly been people who predicted the end of the world - so many that the ancient rabbis ruled we are forbidden from trying to calculate exactly when the end of the world is to come. Rather, they tried to focus Jewish life on accepting responsibility and facing up to problems. Those rabbis also faced great challenges and did not want the Jewish people to despair when great calamities befell them. Therefore, they endorsed the ideal of a future where the problems of this world evaporate, but they knew that future was not one they would see themselves. They taught that although we will not complete the task, nor are we free to desist from the work. And so it is that we people of Israel continue to have children. They show that God is still hopeful that goodness will become incarnate in every human life. In those moments after birth, we can imagine any possibility for that child - doctor, musician, athlete, scientist, even messiah. That moment, however, holds more than just the open promise of that individual child’s life. It also holds the promise of the future world. We are taught at that time, the hearts of children will be turned to their parents and the hearts of parents will be turned to their children. And so we face up to the difficulties this world presents us - for ourselves, for our children, and for promise of a time in the future when all shall be set right again. < I Torah & Haftarah 4 June Naso 2 Sivan Numbers 4:21-7:89 Judges 13:2-25 18 June Shelach 16 Sivan 11 June Behalotecha 9 Sivan Numbers 8:1-12:16 Zachariah 2:14-4:7 25 June Korach 23 Sivan Numbers 13:1-15:41 We encourage all of our congregants to engage in Joshua 2:1-24 weekly Torah study. That can mean only one thing. Summer Shabbat Socializing returns! Starting Friday, June 10, and running throughout the summer, this annual tradition will feature drinks and refreshments in our lobby every Shabbat evening before services. Worship is a sacred time, but it's also a time of community. That's what this is all about. So join us at 5:30 every Friday to mingle with other Temple members. Meet our staff. Enjoy a little wine and snacks. It's the summer, after all. Kick back and enjoy it! page 4 Three Generations: Debi Bock, Margaret Weiller, and Elli Bock Adult B'nei Mitzvah The Temple Book Club The June Book Club will discuss the latest title: The Three Weissmans of Westport by Cathleen Schine. This novel is a perfect kick-off to a summer of reading (right down to the sand-filled cover). This Jane Au s t e n - i n s p i r e d story follows Betty, a 75-year-old recent divorcee who ends up in a Connecticut beach cottage with her two daughters and a host of amusing, hilarious problems to go along with them. According to Publisher's Weekly: "It's a smart crowd pleaser with lovably flawed leads and the best tearjerker finale you're likely to read this year." The Book Club meets at The Temple on Tuesday, June 28, at 7:30 pm. 2011 Adult B'nei Mitzvah Class: Joyce Bihary, Len Forster, Judy Lipshutz, Rabbi Steven Rau, Wendy Lipshutz, Susan Carney, Trinae Watkins MAFTY Board The New MAFTY Board: Carly Herbert, Samantha Dietz, Max Levy, Jessie Rubini, Annie Mason, and Zac Maslia Social Justice at the temple Zaban Closes Another Season Z aban Couples Center closed for residential services on April 30. This concludes the 27th season of providing programs and services to homeless couples in Atlanta. During the course of the 2010-2011 season, we were able to serve 46 couples (92 individuals). Over 40% of those couples were able to transition to permanent housing and that entire group was employed. During the summer, ZCC will provide the support services of our case manager and program director to those couples, as well as others who continue to work toward resettlement in more permanent housing. The work never stops because there are always couples in need of assistance. Over the summer months, we are looking forward to a clothes closet renovation by Marc Kuniansky, as he works toward becoming an Eagle Scout. Also on tap is more work with our partners at SCAD/IIDA-Georgia as we move forward with the planning process for resident room renovations. The support of the congregation has, again, been ever so important. Your donations continue to make a difference in the lives of the homeless in Atlanta. The chiller for our Sanctuary was recently replaced, ensuring that our worship space will be comfortable and cool in the coming summer months. This kind of major capital cost is possible because of your generous support. To pay for this important renovation, we received a grant from The Temple's Endowment Fund, which has been built over many years from contributions and bequests of our members. The contributions of support made by our newer members to the Building Maintenance Fund have also been critical in meeting the needs of our Temple campus and facilities, including this recent chiller replacement. We thank you for your continued support of The Temple, and wanted you to see first-hand just what that support has translated into. Given by: Speedy recovery of Liz Levine: Marjorie A.
