Require sustainability standards and certifications whenever possible
Continuously improve sustainable purchasing practices
Serve as a model of sustainable purchasing to our community of consumers and

Mattress Sustainability
Sustainability Guidelines
1. Reduce waste & GHG emissions
Durable, Upgradable, Replaceable Components, Recycled/Remanufactured, Recyclable
2. Reduce waste & toxicity by choosing greener mattresses
Least-toxic materials, e.g. reduce/eliminate chlorinated compounds, heavy metals, halogens
Proposed Practices & Specs
1. Mattress Life Extension
 Stained but >2yrs of firmness –> wrap with new cover
 Stained but <2yrs of firmness –> wrap with new cover & topper
2. Replacement Mattresses
 Least toxic materials, e.g. Green Bear materials, # of inches t.b.d.
 Removable nylon cover so either cover or mattress can later be replaced
 Dual foam-encased spring so student can flip mattress to be “plush” or “firm”
 Use cover color to identify purchase cycle and/or retro or new mattress
 Offer optional topper upgrade to students for purchase t.b.d.
 Sealed vents to exclude pest habitat

Choose a Side-Seam / Perimeter Seam Design
Eliminate Traditional Brass Vents

Select materials (cover, fire barrier and core
foam) that have




No halogenated flame retardants – PBB’s / PBDE’s
No antimony, heavy metals, melamine, etc.
Insist on test / certification of materials
3rd Party Standards / Evaluation can help
A Stained or Slightly Worn but Relatively New
Mattress May Not Have to be Replaced
A Life Extending Replacement Cover with
Integrated Comfort Layer Can Help
Simply Encase the Old Mattress in the System
Zip it Closed
A Zipper “Garage” can …
… isolate an ingress point for bed bugs and …
…be sealed to show evidence of tampering.
Extend Life of New Acquisitions with
Second Skin Cover Approach
Second Skin Approaches Can Also Assist
Protection of Assets from Bed Bugs
Insist on BFD IX-11 For Full Scale Fire Test
BFD IX-11 Simulates “Real World”
Simple material choice can be the difference
