all throughout mainland China,
Hong Kong, and Macau. The PRC
was founded on October 1st, 1949
with a ceremony at Tiananmen Square, and
from that moment on October 1st became

with large firework displays and festive
themes. The manner in which October 1st
is celebrated in China is very similar to how
Americans celebrate July 4th every year.

Panda America, founded in 1982,
has been an official distributor for
China, Banco de Mexico, Israel
Coins & Medals Corp., The British
Royal Mint, Japan Mint, Sovereign
Nation of the Shawnee Tribe, Perth
Mint, and other government mints
from around the world.
China’s Cheng Siwei, former vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese
Communist Party, recently told Great Britain’s Telegraph newspaper: “the rising tide of
wealth among middle-class Chinese has made China the second-largest gold jewelry
market in the world since 2007, behind only India.” The article goes on to say “Total
gold demand in China last year was nearly 400 [metric tons], up by 21% from 2007.”
If you agree that gold coins should be in your investment or numismatic portfolio, you
should consider Pandas. In an article in the October 27, 1982 edition of USA Today,
Panda America founder Martin Weiss said: “The Krugerrand has been on the market
since 1967, so it will take a while for [Panda] coins to gain significant market share.
Since they are being issued near the end of the year, there won’t be so many available.
While we don’t know what size they will come in, we know the [total weight of gold
used is just] 30,000 troy ounces. Krugerrands minted in 1982
will utilize 3 million troy ounces.”

According to the World Gold Council, the world’s central banks became overall net
buyers of gold as of this year’s second quarter – the first time that’s happened since
2000. And now, in a signature move, China has decided to take a remarkable step,
choosing to take control of its own gold. Hong Kong [recently] announced that it
would bring all its gold bullion back home, recalling the reserves from depositories in
London. Hong Kong has just completed construction of a high-security depository at
the Hong Kong International Airport, and plans to market the facility as a safe storage
option to other Asian central banks, commodity exchanges, precious metals refiners,
commercial banks, and exchange-traded funds (ETFs). This development can (and will)
be spun in all sorts of ways, but what it really means is that China has lost confidence
in the West.”

Here are some excerpts from a pertinent article in Money Morning by Peter Krauth:
“As gold once again breaks the psychologically important barrier of $1,000 an ounce,
all the pundits are wondering if it will last. So let me cut right to the chase. This
breakout run in gold prices will last. Such key fundamental catalysts as increasing
demand, lower supply, inflationary fears and a flight to safety have been driving the
price of gold northward.

Since gold reached and surpassed $1,000 per ounce, many people are
wondering if gold coins should be a part of their investment portfolio.
Whether you are buying gold coins as a straight-bullion investment or with the
possibility of increasing numismatic values, many financial advisors recommend that
you have 10% or more of your total investments in gold.

No one foresaw how Krugerrands would fall out of favor
and virtually disappear from the American marketplace …
or how the 1982 1 oz. gold Panda would become valuable
as a numismatic rarity … and how subsequent gold Pandas
would become one of the world’s most popular bullion coins
(with many increasing in value above and beyond the value
of the gold).

So whether you are a “gold bug” like me, or just want to be
cautious, you should consider diversifying a portion of your
investments into gold -- perhaps gold Pandas, other new gold
bullion and commemorative coins, or numismatic rarities.

Outlaws Who Became Heroes
Commemmorated on New Chinese Coins
Imagine the Lone Ranger or one of John
Wayne’s fictional western characters on
U.S. coins. Well that’s sort of what the
Chinese have done—by issuing silver
and gold coins featuring some of the
outlaws-turned-heroes that appeared
in one of the great classical novels of
Chinese literature, “Outlaws of the
Marsh.”
The Chinese saga “Outlaws of the
Marsh” is must reading for Chinese high
school students, and was even carried
by Chairman Mao during the Long
March (retreat of the Red Army from
the Nationalists in 1934) as a constant
reminder of the proud traditions of the
Chinese people. It tells the stories of 108
outlaws who became heroes during the
Song Dynasty in the years leading up to
the establishment of the Southern Song regime in 1127. Set in
mountain fortresses, tea houses, inns, private houses, courtrooms
and on journeys by road and water, their tales involve stratagems,
seductions, betrayals, warnings, and a wealth of other incidents.
After defeating the imperial armies, the outlaws are eventually
granted amnesty by the emperor, who then recruits the outlaws
to form an imperial military contingent. The heroes eliminate
foreign invaders of the Liao Dynasty and quell the uprisings
by rebel forces around the nation.
“Outlaws of the Marsh” has been transformed
into a classic Chinese opera. And, among
numerous translations, Pearl S. Buck did one
of the earliest English versions entitled “All
Men are Brothers” in 1933. A film adaptation
of the novel was produced in 1972, and a
1980s TV serial were both produced in Hong
Kong. In the early 1990s, a Manga (Japanese
comics) appeared, and a half-hour animated
series “Hero:108” can soon be viewed on the
Cartoon Network.
The first silver coins in the three-year series feature full color
representations of Lin Chong and Lu Zhishen uprooting a willow
tree. Each proof quality 10 Yuan coin is 1 troy oz. of .999 fine
silver; there is a limit of 30,000 2-coin sets. According to the
novel, Lin Chong was six feet four inches tall, with fierce eyes
and a head like a panther, earning him the nickname “Panther
Head.” In his early life he served the Imperial Court as the
martial arts instructor of the 800,000 strong Imperial Guards. Lu
Zhishen, nicknamed the “Flowery Monk,” is the lead in the first
major story cycle of the novel, in which he comes to epitomize
loyalty, strength, justice and brashness.
sets (together with the two silver coins).
The real Song Jiang and his bandits
were active in early 1121. The official
biography of Zhang Shuye, the Prefect of
Haizhou, states: “The scouts say that the
bandits have made their way to the coast
and seized control of ten huge vessels.
Zhang recruited 1000 men and planted
an ambush in a nearby city. Next, he sent
skirmishers to lure the bandits into battle.
The best foot soldiers were stationed by the
coast. When the armies clashed, the bandit
s’ ships were then burnt. When the bandits
heard that, they lost their will to fight.
The army lying in ambush then attacked
and captured many of the bandits. Then
Song Jiang surrendered.” The historical
Song Jiang’s eventual fate is unknown
after his surrender to the Imperial Court.
The fictional Song Jiang is described in
“Outlaws of the Marsh” as having eyes like those of a phoenix,
a big squarish mouth and dark complexion. Standing at six feet,
he was relatively short compared to the other heroes.
Completing this 2009 series are rectangular, colored, .5 oz.
999 fine silver and gold proof coins in denominations of 50
and 2,000 Yuan, with maximum mintages of 10,000 and 800
respectively. The silver coin features “Zhang Shun capturing
Huan Weneing,” and the gold version depicts “The
clever capturing of the royal birthday gifts.”
Zhang Shun could swim for up to 25 kilometres
and stay submerged for seven days and seven
nights—earning him the nickname “White
Streak in the Waves.” The colored coin
pictures Huang Wenbing, a low-ranking
official from Jiangzhou, who is scheming by
nature and desires to make his name through
unscrupulous means, being captured by Zhang
Shun in an under-water battle. The attack by the
outlaw/heroes in Huangnigang, pictured on the
50 Yuan silver coin, enabled them to capture the royal
birthday gifts.

official distributor Panda America, the company that helped
introduce China’s popular gold Pandas in 1982.

The Accession of
Henry VIII
Limited Edition
£5 Proof Coins
Official distributor Panda America is offering 2 different Henry
VIII coins commemorating the 500th Anniversary of his accession
to the throne:
Popular Mini Car is Featured
on Coins from The Royal Mint
In an international competition in 1999, the Mini was voted
the second most influential Car of the Century, behind the Ford
Model T; the Volkswagen Bug came in fourth. And so it is not
surprising that Great Britain is celebrating the 50th anniversary
of the Mini with limited edition commemorative coins produced
by The Royal Mint. Only a handful of automobiles have ever
appeared on coins—since the valuable “Automobile Dollar”
was issued in the Chinese province of Kweichow in 1928.
The Royal Mint has produced several versions of legal tender
coins--for the British Crown dependency of Alderney--celebrating
the venerable Mini’s 50th anniversary. Least expensive is the silver
dollar-size Brilliant Uncirculated £5 cupro-nickel denomination,
housed in a full color presentation folder, limited to 100,000
pieces, priced at . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $19.95.
The Mini came about because of a fuel shortage in the United
Kingdom caused by the 1956 Suez Crisis. Leonard Lord, the
head of BMC, was determined to “designing a proper miniature
car,” and so he specified that the car should be contained within
a box that measured 10 × 4 × 4 ft. The production version of the
Mini, designed by Sir Alec Issigonis, was first demonstrated to
the press in April 1959. Six years later, the millionth Mini rolled
off the assembly line.
The similarly designed limited edition (only 5,000 authorized)
sterling silver version is gem proof quality, and features a colorful
British flag on the roof of the Mini; it comes in an elegant
presentation case with an informative Certificate of Authenticity,
and is priced at . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$85.
• Struck in 22 carat gold to magnificent Proof quality, the
commemorative 5 Pound Gold coin is housed in a walnut-veneer
display case and is accompanied by a numbered Certificate of
Authenticity. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $2,000
The Royal Mint in the United Kingdom has just released
two unique coins to celebrate the 500th Anniversary of the
accession to the throne of the formidable King Henry the
8th. Henry VIII reigned for almost four decades and they
were formative years for the monarchy, the church and the
state. His greatest legacy is perhaps the establishment of the
Royal Navy. HIs long term failure was dynastic: he left three
children, but no grandchildren.
The crown piece marks the 500th anniversary for the
accession of Henry VIII, its new reverse design inspired by
the majestic standing portrait of Henry by Hans Holbein. The
artist, John Bergdahl, explains: “not merely a monarch, during
his lifetime Henry revolutionized our system of government,
laying the foundations for our modern democratic society.
He also reformed the Church in this country and created the
Royal Navy. Above all, he was a man of his time, a renaissance
man, an enlightened monarch in a age of enlightenment
and this is how i have endeavored to portray him.” In the
coin, Henry is shown standing before a frieze of roses in
the “antique” style, favoring the carvings and tapestries of
the period. He is presented within a petal shaped device
used frequently to frame portraits on medieval coins. The
cipher HR ( Henricus Rex) is taken from the an elaborately
engraved gun barrel of the time and all is enclosed within a
rope
border representing
the Royal Navy.

One of the first Morris Minis in the United States was delivered
to the Englert family in Arlington Texas in 1959.
Issigonis’ friend John Cooper, owner of the Cooper Car Company
and designer and builder of Formula One and rally cars, saw
the potential of the Mini for competition--so the two men
collaborated to create the Mini Cooper, a nimble, economical
and inexpensive car that debuted in 1961.

crown is housed in an attractive folder richly illustrated and
containing a wealth of information on Henry’s life and his actions
that changed the face of the kingdom. . . . . . . . . . $19.95

The Mini Cooper S earned acclaim with Monte Carlo Rally
victories in 1964, 1965 and 1967. Minis were initially placed
first, second and third in the 1966 rally as well, but were
disqualified after a controversial decision by the French judges
for a minor infraction involving the headlamps dimming circuit.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s the British market enjoyed
numerous “special editions” of the Mini, which shifted the car
from a mass-market item into a fashionable icon. It was this image
that perhaps helped the Mini become such an asset for BMW,
which later took control of the Rover Group, which included the
Mini. The new Mini is larger than the classic Mini--it is around
22 in. longer, 12 in. wider, and weighs 2,315 lb. rather than
1,433 lb. On April 3, 2007, the one millionth Mini rolled out of
the Oxford Plant after six years of production.

The stone may have been a monument or possibly a sacrificial
altar. The sun god Tonatuih is in the center; each of his hands
holds a human heart. The god is surrounded by four squares
that represent previous creations that perished by jaguars, wind,
rain and water. Next come representations of the Aztec calendar

The Sovereign Nation of the Shawnee Tribe (Oklahoma),
recognized by the United States under the Shawnee Tribe Status
Act of 2000, authorized the historic first American Indian coins
- featuring Shawnee heroes Chief Tecumseh and his brother
Tenskwatawa, “The Prophet.” These were followed by coins
picturing Lewis and Clark, and the Indians who guided them,
historic battles, etc.
In 2004, Tribal Chairman Eddie L. Tullis authorized the issuance
coins to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of Recognition of
the Sovereign Nation of Poarch Creek Indians by the United
States. The Poarch Creek coins feature notable Tribal members
such as Chief Menawa and Tchow-ee-pu-kaw, enthusiastic PowWow dancers, etc.
During the Civil War, many of the Shawnee Tribe fought for
the Union, which inspired the name, “Loyal Shawnee.” Instead
of receiving compensation or honors for their service, they
returned to their Kansas lands, only to find much of it taken
over by non-Indian settlers. In 1861 Kansas became a state, and
the non-Indian citizens demanded that all Indian tribes must be
removed from the state. The Loyal Shawnee made an agreement
with Cherokee Nation in 1869, allowing 722 Loyal Shawnee
citizenship within the Cherokee tribe and allotments of Cherokee
land in Oklahoma.
Beginning in the 1980s, the Loyal Shawnee began an effort
regain their own tribal status, independent of the Cherokee
Nation. Congress passed Public Law 106-568, the Shawnee
Tribe Status Act of 2000, and the Shawnee Tribe was able to
organize as their own autonomous, federally recognized tribe.
Currently, there are 2000 enrolled tribal members, with 1500 of
them living within the state of Oklahoma. Ron Sparkman is the
elected chairman, currently serving a four-year term

The Poarch Band of Creek Indians are descendents of a segment
of the original Creek Nation, which once covered almost all of
Alabama and Georgia. Unlike many southeastern Indian tribes,
the Poarch Creeks were not removed from their tribal lands, and
have lived together for over 150 years.
Ancestors of the Poarch Creeks moved down the Alabama River
to meet demand for services required by the young American
government. These “Friendly Creeks” signed contracts with
the new federal government to serve as guides, interpreters,
ferrymen and river pilots for those traveling through the Creek
Territory. As a result of the Treaty of Fort Jackson, the Creeks were
illegally forced to cede their territory to the United States and
were forcibly removed from their land in Alabama to Oklahoma.
But several Creek families in Alabama who had assisted the
United States by providing essential services, were allowed to
retain their land. Because of close family ties, the Indian families
intermarried with each other so that a distinct group emerged,
called the Poarch Creek Indians.

Panda America at the American Numismatic
Association’s World’s Fair of Money®
The Panda America staff did not have to travel far this year to attend the American Numismatic
Association’s World’s Fair of Money® since it was held at the nearby Los Angeles Convention
Center, from August 5-9. Over 7,500 collectors attended, and the bourse room was crowded with
hundreds of dealers from around the world, as well as representatives from these government
mints: United States Mint Japan Mint, Monnáie de Paris, China Gold Coin, Inc., Royal Mint, Royal
Australian Mint, South African Mint, Israel Coins & Medals Corporation, Royal Canadian Mint, The
Austrian Mint and Banco de México. Millions of dollars worth of great numismatic rarities could be
seen in special exhibits, like the one mounted by the Smithsonian Institution.

Business was brisk at our table, and equally important were the many meetings that were held
between Panda America principles Peter Yeung and Kitty Quan, and the heads of the delegations
from the attending world mints. Panda America discussed the new issues expected in the coming
year, which we will be distributing.

Selections from the Panda America Catalog
Panda America carries an inventory of thousands of modern coins as well as collectible numismatic issues from the United States
and around the world—going back hundreds of years. Many of these can be seen and ordered on our web site www.pandaamerica.
com, and we are pleased to list a diverse selection in the following pages. Please note that because we may have small quantities of
some items—perhaps as little as one specimen—all of these coins are offered subject to availability. And, since the value of precious
metals is constantly changing on world markets, the prices of these coins are also subject to change.
