FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL AND THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD
Dear ISB Community,
It is with a great sense of achievement and pride that we present you the Annual Report
from the 2012–2013 school year, having successfully completed the 50th year of bilingual
education at the International School of Boston.
We are proud of this longevity. This adventure, which started
modestly with only three students in a basement in 1962,
has led us to where we are today, with over 600 students on
2 campuses. But numbers are certainly not the determining
factor of our success. The vision, the tenacity, the talent, the
commitment and the generosity of the past generations have
given our school a strong foundation on which to continue to
build for the future.
In 2012 and 2013, we successfully completed a short
fundraising campaign (initially envisioned to take at least
two years) for the new Media-Center and Library and we
collected $600,000, half of the funds required to complete
its construction and renovation. In addition, the spring
of 2013 was the occasion to launch a new campaign for
the renovation of part of the Lower School, including the
enlargement of the music room.
These successes are remarkable for what in fact is a very
young school in comparison to many others in New England.
But despite our success, challenges remain. First among
them is the challenge of maintaining the excellence of our
programs. The educational landscape is constantly changing
and academic excellence requires continuous development,
whether it is professional development of our faculty or
development of our facilities and technology. We have
come a long way in a short time. We own our Cambridge
campus and with the support from ALL of YOU we have
accomplished tremendous improvements in our facilities.
Our new playground, our math lab, our science lab, the
4th floor renovation, the student lounge, additional
classrooms and our library and media center were all
funded by donations.
In the pages of this Annual Report you will discover the
details of the 2012–2013 fundraising campaign and of the
great improvements that were made possible because of the
generosity of our donors.
At the same time, the generosity of our community does not
forget the roots of our school, the Maternelle in Arlington.
It is with immense gratitude that we acknowledge the gift
of Gina and René Robert, ISB Maternelle alumnus, for
$124,610, the largest single gift ever received.

Chère Communauté du LIB,
C’est avec un sentiment de devoir accompli et de fierté que nous vous présentons le
Rapport Annuel 2012–2013, après les célébrations réussies du 50ème anniversaire de
l’enseignement bilingue du Lycée International de Boston.
Nous sommes fiers de cette longévité. Cette aventure,
qui a modestement démarré avec seulement 3 élèves
dans le sous-sol d’une maison en 1962, nous a mené
où nous sommes aujourd’hui, avec plus de 600 élèves
sur deux campus. Mais les chiffres ne sont certainement
pas l’élément déterminant de notre succès. La vision,
la ténacité, le talent, l’engagement et la générosité des
générations passées ont bâti les solides fondations sur
lesquelles construire notre avenir.
Ces succès sont remarquables pour notre école qui est
encore jeune, comparée à beaucoup d’autres en Nouvelle
Angleterre. Mais ces succès ne doivent pas masquer les
défis à venir. Le premier d’entre eux consiste à maintenir
l’excellence de nos programmes. Le paysage éducatif
évolue constamment et l’excellence académique requiert
des adaptations régulières, qu’il s’agisse de la formation
professionnelle de nos enseignants ou de l’avancée de
nos infrastructures et technologies. Nous avons beaucoup
avancé en peu de temps. Nous sommes propriétaires
de nos bâtiments du campus de Cambridge et, grâce au
soutien de vous tous, nous avons apporté de remarquables
améliorations à nos infrastructures. Notre nouvelle aire de
jeux, notre laboratoire de mathématiques, notre laboratoire
de sciences, la rénovation complète du 4ème étage, tout cela
a été financé par vos dons.
Notre généreuse communauté n’oublie pas pour autant les
racines de l’école : notre maternelle d’Arlington. C’est avec
une immense gratitude que nous acceptons le don de Gina
et René Robert, alumnus du LIB, d’une valeur de $124 610 ;
le don le plus important que nous ayons jamais reçu.
En 2012–2013, nous avons mené à bien une courte
campagne de levée de fonds (initialement prévue sur deux
ans) pour notre médiathèque et bibliothèque et nous avons
collecté $600 000, la moitié des fonds nécessaires à la
construction de cet espace. De plus, au printemps 2013,
nous avons lancé une série de projets pour la rénovation
d’une partie de l’école élémentaire, avec notamment
l’agrandissement de notre salle de musique.
Dans les pages de ce rapport annuel vous découvrirez le
détail de notre campagne 2012–2013 et des grands progrès
effectués grâce à la générosité de nos donateurs.

FROM THE CO-CHAIRS OF THE PARENTS AND TEACHERS ORGANIZATION (PTO)
Dear ISB Community,
This year, we were privileged to lead a dedicated team of fourteen parents and teachers,
alongside countless volunteers who helped organize over twenty enrichment activities for
our children, as well as community and fundraising events throughout the school year.
The level of commitment and enthusiasm that so many
members of our community bring to our school was
extraordinary and we are profoundly thankful for their
involvement.
Year after year, the largest contributors to the PTO’s
income is the popular Bread and Bakery Sale and the
annual fee. Sizeable fundraisers are our popular Holiday
Baskets Silent Auction, and, for the first time this past year,
“Flower Power”, a flower bulb sale in which our students
participated enthusiatically.
Our whole school party “A Night in Venice” left a lasting
impression on over 350 participants of all ages who dined
and danced in a cheerful atmosphere. For the first time ever,
our ISB Springfest became an exhibition of international
art and culture, of which our school has so much to show.
The traditional Holiday Boutique gathered more than 40
exhibitors. The PTO supported “La Grande Dictée de la
Francophonie”, volunteering time and sponsoring prizes, and
“Le Printemps des Poètes”, where our unique community
got a chance to celebrate a wide and diverse selection of
poetry and art.
There is no more fulfilling reason for the PTO’s existence
than the enrichment activities. The 20 shows selected
included a Chinese New-Year celebration with acrobats
in Maternelle, a one-week music composition workshop and
concert with Eric John Kaiser for Lower School, a civil rights
assembly with author David Greenberg for Middle School
and the play “Servant of Two Masters”, by Carlo Goldoni, for
our Upper Schoolers.
Part of the PTO funds have also been applied to buying
bicycles and tricycles for our little ones, cameras for all
Lower School classes, more books and audio material for
our Middle School, and tablets for the Upper School’s new
tablet initiative.
The purpose of all elected members of the PTO leadership
team was to give our best to our school community. As we
look back on this past school year, cheerful faces, festive
moods and eclectic activities for our students come to mind.
We loved being part of it and can only reiterate our gratitude
and admiration for all passionate volunteers that contributed
so generously to making our school a great place to be.

Cette année, nous avons eu l’honneur et le privilège d’encadrer une formidable équipe
de parents et d’enseignants, qui, aux côtés de nombreux bénévoles, a mis sur pied plus
de vingt activités d’enrichissement pour nos enfants ainsi que de nombreux événements
communautaires que nous avons tous appréciés.
Le niveau d’implication et d’enthousiasme que la
communauté de l’école a montré cette année a été
extraordinaire. Nous vous en sommes profondément
reconnaissants.
Nos plus gros revenus ont été, encore une fois, les fruits des
ventes de pain et de viennoiseries, des cotisations annuelles
des familles, de la vente aux enchères de nos magnifiques
Paniers des Fêtes et, pour la première fois cette année, du
« Pouvoir des Fleurs », une vente porte-à-porte de bulbes
de fleurs à laquelle nos élèves ont participé avec beaucoup
d’enthousiasme.
La Grande Soirée du PTO sur le thème « Une Soirée
à Venise » laissera de bons souvenirs à plus de 350
participants de tous âges ! Notre kermesse annuelle s’est
transformée en Springfest Internationale, une exposition
d’arts, de cultures et de traditions de tous les horizons, à
l’image de notre communauté.
« La Boutique des Artistes », désormais une tradition du
temps des fêtes, a accueilli plus de 40 exposants. Le PTO a
également été heureux d’offrir une fois de plus son soutien
et son parrainage à « La Grande Dictée de la Francophonie »
ainsi qu’au « Printemps des Poètes ».
Parmi plus de 20 programmes d’enrichissement proposés
cette année, les élèves ont pu, en maternelle, célébrer le
nouvel an chinois avec un spectacle d’acrobates, participer
à un atelier de musique d’une semaine avec l’artiste Eric
John Kaiser en primaire, assister à la conférence de l’auteur
David Greenberg au collège, et passer une soirée au théâtre
au lycée avec « Arlequin, serviteur de deux maîtres » de
Carlo Goldoni.
Le PTO a également contribué à l’achat de bicyclettes et de
tricycles pour la maternelle, d’appareils photo pour chacune
des classes de primaire, de livres et de matériel audio pour
nos collégiens, et de tablettes pour le lycée.
Le but de tous les membres élus de l’équipe du PTO était
de donner le meilleur à notre communauté. Nous garderons
tous en mémoire ces bons moments passés ensemble.
Nous sommes heureux d’avoir pu contribuer à la vie du
LIB et ne pouvons que réitérer notre gratitude et notre
admiration pour tous les bénévoles qui ont si généreusement
fait de notre école un endroit où il a fait bon vivre pendant
toute une année.

Soon after the opening of our new Media-Center
& Library, we launched our Spring Campaign as
we were ready to tackle our next challenge: the
much-needed improvements of our Maternelle
and Lower School facilities.
Peu après l’inauguration de la médiathèque et
bibliothèque, nous avons décidé de relever notre
prochain défi : l’amélioration indispensable des
infrastructures de la maternelle et de l’école
élémentaire.
Plans were ready to undertake a series of projects that
all together greatly enhance the quality of our Maternelle
and Lower School physical space, equipment and overall
learning experience. Furthermore, the renovation of the
music room will benefit the Middle and Upper school
students as well.
Pour cela, nous avons finalisé les plans d’une série de
projets permettant une meilleure utilisation de l’espace,
l’installation de nouveaux équipements, pour, au final,

RICHARD BLUMENTHAL
The Building where you stand now was purchased in
2003 by the school. It is historic and has had many lives
since 1850.
Built as the Cambridge poor house, used as an orphanage,
a religious school, left empty for a number of years … it is
now the vibrant home of the International School of Boston.
For over 50 years this 4th floor where you stand today was
a large storage space, a spooky place for Halloween thrills,
an ISB lost & found.
Therefore, I feel privileged to be standing here today as
witness of a new era for ISB. The 4th floor of our school
would probably be the envy of most schools, even in this
highly competitive educational region. We have a lot to be
thankful for and I would like to take this opportunity to voice
thanks to those who made it possible.
Firstly, I would like to thank Nathalie Beauvais, the Chair
of our Building & Ground Committee for her leadership
throughout all 3 projects on this floor; the science lab in
2010, the student lounge and classrooms and 2011 and
the media-center and library today. Her project planning
expertise, her quest for the best suitable solutions for the
school and her demanding due diligence process have lead
to successfully completing all three project within budget
and almost within timetable. Thank you Nathalie!
Secondly, I would like to thank Jeff Lamb who oversaw the
work and who, I know, went far beyond his professional
duties to give us what we wanted. Jeff labored ceaselessly
with patience and endurance. Thank you Jeff!
For patiently working with our parent community, faculty,
staff and students and listening to us all, I would like to
thank our architects Maryann Thompson and Michelle
Laboy. Their enthusiasm led us to dream big; their
understanding made these dreams feasible and a reality.

Thanks to Highland Development, the contractors who
carried out the work and again, a special vote of thanks to

PRONONCÉ LORS DE L’INAUGURATION
Le bâtiment où vous êtes a été acquis par l’école en 2003.
C’est un bâtiment historique qui a connu de nombreuses
vies depuis 1850.
Construit comme la Maison des Pauvres de Cambridge,
utilisé comme orphelinat puis école religieuse, laissé à
l’abandon pendant des années … c’est aujourd’hui la
maison du dynamique Lycée International de Boston.
Depuis plus de 50 ans, ce 4ème étage où vous vous tenez a
servi de grenier de rangement, un endroit sinistre pour les
frayeurs d’Halloween, les objets trouvés du LIB …
C’est pourquoi je me sens particulièrement privilégié d’être
devant vous ce soir, témoin d’une ère nouvelle pour le LIB.
Ce 4ème étage ferait sans doute l’envie de bien des écoles,
mêmes les plus prestigieuses, qui nous entourent dans la
région. Nous avons beaucoup de personnes à remercier et
je voudrais le faire ici pour tous ceux qui ont œuvré à la
réussite de ce projet.
Je souhaiterais commencer par remercier Nathalie Beauvais,
la présidente du comité des bâtiments et des terrains pour
son leadership tout au long de nos trois derniers projets à
cet étage : le laboratoire de sciences, l’espace lycéen et la
médiathèque & bibliothèque aujourd’hui. Son expertise dans
la gestion de projets, sa quête permanente des meilleures
solutions possibles pour notre école et son exigent processus
de contrôle ont conduit à la réalisation de ces projets dans
les limites du budget et de temps impartis. Merci Nathalie !
Ensuite, je voudrais remercier Jeff Lamb qui a supervisé le
chantier et qui, je le sais, a été bien au delà de ses responsabilités professionnelles pour que nous obtenions ce que
nous voulions. Jeff a travaillé sans relâche avec patience et

Pour avoir patiemment travaillé avec notre communauté de
parents, d’enseignants et d’élèves et pour avoir su être à

BREVET, BAC AND IB RESULTS
FRENCH BAC RESULTS
IB RESULTS
All 19 of our candidates in 12th grade have received their
French Baccalaureate, with 16 honors designations: 4
highest honors, 6 high honors and 6 honors. That gives
us 84% honors grades, with an average between the two
sections (S and ES) of 14.1/20.
The IB results this year were very good overall, especially in
the Extended Essay (EE) component.
These are among the best results of our history, which
began with our first graduating class in 2002, and we
congratulate our graduates and their teachers for this
remarkable success!
2013 BREVET RESULTS
We are proud to announce that the results of the Brevet are
equally impressive. Our students had 100% success, and
100% received a mention (honors)!
26.3% received Honors, 42.10% High Honors, and 31.7%
Highest Honors, with a class average of 15.31/20.
Congratulations to our students and the ISB teaching team!
The minimum score required to obtain the diploma is 24,
and with additional points earned by exemplary work in TOK
(Theory of Knowledge) and on the Extended Essay, students
can earn up to 45 points in total (6 courses graded between
0 and 7, plus 3 TOK/EE points).
This year, the world average IB score was just under 30
(29.4), and our diploma holders’ average was 33!
Our highest score this year, 38, was achieved by only 2.8%
of candidates worldwide. At ISB, 50% of our diploma
holders earned 34 or above. Worldwide, only 12.9% earned
34 or above.
In addition, we had a record number of exemplary Extended
Essays, including one that received a perfect score. The
world average of Extended Essays receiving a grade of
A is 13%. At ISB, 41% of our students received an A.
Worldwide, 23% of Extended Essays receive a grade of B,
and at ISB, 50% of our students earned a B. The Extended
Essay process at ISB adheres very strictly to IB guidelines.
Teacher involvement is restricted to verifying that the
chosen topic and research question are appropriate and to
encouraging the student over a period of 3-5 hours total.
The excellent work done on Extended Essay is truly that of
the students.

Les résultats du Brevet sont impressionnants : 100% de
réussite et 100% de mentions !
26.3% ont obtenue une mention Assez Bien, 42.10%
une mention Bien et 31.57% une mention Très Bien.
La moyenne générale est de 15.31 sur 20.

Nos 19 candidats de terminale ont tous reçu leur
Baccalauréat, dont 16 avec mentions : 4 Très Bien, 6 Bien,
et 6 Assez Bien. Cela nous donne 84% de mentions, avec
une moyenne entre les deux sections (S et ES) de 14,1
sur 20.
Ce sont parmi les meilleurs résultats de notre histoire,
qui a commencé avec notre première promotion en 2002.

Les résultats du Baccalauréat International (IB) sont bons
cette année, en particulier pour la composante dissertation
de fin d’étude (Extended Essai ou EE).
Le score minimum requis pour l’obtention du diplôme est
de 24 points. Grâce aux points obtenus en TOK (Theory of
Knowledge) et en dissertation (Extended Essai ou EE), les
élèves peuvent obtenir jusqu’à 45 points (6 matières sont
notées entre 0 et 7 et le TOK/EE est sur 3 points).
La moyenne mondiale du IB est juste en dessous de 30
points (29.4). La moyenne de nos diplômés cette année est
de 33 points !
La note la plus élevée obtenue au LIB cette année est de 38
points. Au niveau mondial, seulement 2.8% des candidats

De plus, nos élèves ont rédigé un très grand nombre de

obtiennent un A. Au LIB, 41% des élèves en obtiennent un !
Au niveau mondial toujours, 23% ont un B. Au LIB, c’est la
moitié des élèves !
Le processus de rédaction de la dissertation de fin d’étude
suit scrupuleusement les recommandations de l’IB, avec
une implication réduite des enseignants qui s’en tiennent
à vérifier que le sujet de recherche choisi est pertinent,
et à encadrer les élèves entre 3 et 5 heures maximum.
L’excellent travail accompli en dissertation de fin d’étude
reflète donc réellement la qualité de nos élèves !
