This document is intend as a job aid to assist field technicians in the setup and successful execution of the ITU‐T Y.1564 Ethernet Service Activation Methodology test suite utilizing the EXFO Brand FTB‐1 platform equipped with the FTB‐880 or FTB‐860 module. EXFO FTB-1/FTB-880 Test Setup

It is recommended that this document be read in its entirety prior to completing the first test set up.
This document covers both Single Ended (Loopback) and Dual Test Set modes for Y.1564 Ethernet test suite and
branches at Step 8 depending on whether Single Test Set or Dual Test Set will be utilized.
This document focuses on the 10 Gig Optical interface however all steps and procedures convey to lower rate optical
and electrical Ethernet interfaces.
Step 1 - Upon initial boot up you should be presented with the main Mini Toolbox screen. Select the FTB-1
NetBlazer Module
Step 2 - From the top tab bar select the “Test Applications” tab

Step 5 - Using the drop-down select the correct port for testing
Note: only Port 1 has the capability for 10G Ethernet testing
Step 6 - From the Interface Type drop-down select 10G LAN

Step 7 - From the top row of tabs select the Global tab
If utilizing “Dual Test Set” complete steps 8a through 18 if utilizing a “Single Ended” test
complete Step 8 then skip to Step 19
Step 8- FOR SINGLE ENDED testing verify the dual test set box is NOT checked and a hard loop has been
placed at the far end

Step 8a - FOR DUAL TEST SET: Select the box for Dual Test Set if this unit is used for the remote side select
remote under the mode drop down box all other functions will be controlled by the “Local” test set
Note: if the test set is being used for the remote location, prior to selecting Dual Test Set, click on the Discover
Remote button and if desired rename the Module ID. This ID is used by the Local test set to identify the remote test
set.
Step 9 - Select Local under the mode drop down box if this unit is to be used as the local unit. If the unit is to
be used as the remote unit, select remote under the mode drop down box. If this is the remote unit set up is
complete

Step 10 - On the local test set, tap the Discover Remote button
Step 11 - A new window will pop up, provided both units are on the same subnet the far end unit will appear
in the Remote Modules Discovery list. If the unit does not appear verify both units are on the same subnet by
going to the Interface tab on the top row and the Network tab on the bottom row and comparing IP
addresses

Step 12 - Highlight the correct Remote Test Set for testing

Step 14 - A warning window will appear, select Yes. This will stop any test that is currently running
Step 15 - An information box will appear informing you that the unit is connecting to the remote

Step 16 - You will get an information box informing you the remote is being configured for Dual Test Set
mode
Step 17 - When the box disappears tap the close button and close the window

Step 18 - At this point you will get a “Connected with the dual test set enabled” indication showing a
successful connection to the remote test set
Note: any changes made to the test configuration while the test sets are connected will automatically be uploaded to
the remote test set

Step 19 - To configure the services select the service tab from the top row

Step 20 - Select the service you wish to configure
Note: at least one service must be configured and enabled for a successful test

Step 22 - If desired rename the service for easy identification utilizing up to 16 characters then click the OK
button

Step 24 - Verify the data profile is selected and click close
Step 25 - Under Framing select Ethernet in the drop-down box

Step 26 - Enable the service under the service drop-down box if you're testing full bandwidth only one
service will be enabled otherwise configure and enable services as necessary for the test configuration
Note: at least one service must be properly configured and enabled for a successful test
Step 27 - Utilizing the drop-down button under frame size select random. This will randomly transmit the
seven standard frame sizes during the performance test

Step 28 - In the CIR (Committed Information Rate) boxes input the configured speed if testing the full
bandwidth input the full line rate in both the local-to-remote and the remote-to-local boxes. Leave the EIR
(Excess Information Rate) unchecked and blank when testing full line rates
Step 29 - Overshoot will always be the sum total of CIR and EIR. When testing full line rates overshoot will
always match the line rate. Leave all SLA parameters i.e. Jitter, frame loss & round-trip latency at default
values

Step 30 - If VLAN’s are required for testing, select the VLAN In the lower set of tabs and input the correct
VLAN identification numbers in the appropriate boxes
Note: this step is not required for single segment testing
Step 31 -Select the ramp from the top set of tabs and verify default setup which should be 50%, 75%, 90%,
CIR and Overshoot. If these values are not correct click the default button to reset the values

Step 32 - Click the green Start button on the right-hand pane. Provided the test configuration is set up
correctly you should get the indication as noted in Step 33
Step 33 - The first step is the Service Configuration test this verifies the service is setup correctly. Upon
completion of the Service Configuration test the Service Performance test will automatically start and run for
10 minutes or the allotted time as set under the global tab

Step 34 - Once the test is complete there will be a pop-up window asking if you wish to generate a report for
the test that was just completed. If you wish to generate report click the Yes button
Step 35 - In the pop-up window for the report fill in the form with the appropriate information reflecting the
conditions for which the test was run. After this is been properly filled in click the save report button. The
report will be saved in PDF or Text format in a directory on the test set or to a flash drive if one is plugged in.
If save internally, this report can then be copied to a USB jump drive and e-mailed, uploaded, printed, etc.
