Moon journals are a fun and effective way to extend content writing in many grade levels. Among other uses, they pertain directly to fourth grade science curriculum and all primary grades for observation-­‐based writing. One plan for a moon journal from NASA is located h ere: http://www.nsta.org/publications/press/extras/files/nexttime/MoonJournal.pdf There are various resources on Destiny to extend and support night sky investigation or moon journals. Feel free to bookmark or even link to the guide! Our purpose in creating this guide is to give the researcher a single site to check for information resources about Alaska. The Home page of this guide has links to Destiny, UAF Festival of Native Arts, SLED, and much more. Check back often as we’ll be updating the page as we locate new Alaska resources. In addition, the guide includes a page of resources to support Elizabeth Peratrovich Day. UAF Classes (registration through ESS): When we are working on introductions, for example, tell students that their drafts will b e due on a certain date. When they come to class that day with their work, ask them to draft two additional leads for the same paper, choosing two different strategies from a list of possible ways to begin their essays. Introduction to Thinking Maps (K: 12): 3/26 – 5/7/15 Facilitator: Nicole Krenzke – 1 credit This course will introduce Thinking Maps as a visual tool that can be used in all content areas. Participants will learn about the eight maps, the research behind the creation of the maps, thinking processes associated with each map, and application in various content areas. Give the students minimal time (10-­‐
15 minutes) to create a sense of urgency but also to bypass the brain’s initial resistance and to force them to just get it done. More often than not, it’s the third introduction-­‐the one the students wrote in class, under pressure-­‐that emerges as the favorite. Why? Because students have begun to write their way into their topics and are thus gaining a foothold on both what they want to say and how they want to say it. Try it sometime. Reminder!
