Worldwide, small groups of people have been experimenting with windsurf sails and wing designs in an attempt to harness the wind as a power source for snowboards. Until recently, however, they had marginal success. “Ten years ago, we didn’t have any training videos or manuals to use as a guide; it was all done by trial and error,” said Degelman. “We took quite a few scary bumps with the early kites but we knew we were onto something.” Kiteboarding, whether on the water or the snow, is now one of the fastest-growing sports in the world. It has become much safer and easier to learn due to the advances in technology, kite design, safety release systems and instruction. With these new innovations, kiteboarding has evolved to suit different types of riders, terrain and wind conditions. “I’ve tried most of the crazy sports out there but kiteboarding is the best of the best,” Degelman. “It feels like driving a sports car on strings. You can snowboard up and down hills for hours without lift lines, jump well over 20 feet high, and land as soft as can be.” Degelman Industries Research and Development Department personnel also share their boss’s interest in kiteboarding as over half of the staff members are kiteboard fanatics. “There is usually quite a bit of kite chatter in the office and we actually post the weekly wind forecast on a white board,” added Degelman. Aaron Hackel, Degelman’s friend and fellow kite enthusiast, has played the key role in organizing the KB4C event. Hackel feels a responsibility to help promote the sport for a worthy cause, and the proceeds from the event will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society. I have heard this from so many new people after a good water or snow session: ‘This is the BEST sport ever!’” Saskatchewan is one of the best places to kiteboard year round. “We have lakes, endless fields of powder and plenty of wind,” said Degelman. “I think it’s pretty funny every time I hear someone complain about our wind in Saskatchewan. If people only knew!” www.escapesports.ca 339 Ave A, Saskatoon 244-7433
