2012 Annual Report Connecting students to careers, Professionals to communities, Communities to better health. Dear Neighbors, Colleagues, Friends: Established in 1979 “to enhance access to quality healthcare, particularly primary and preventive care, by improving the supply and distribution of healthcare professions through community/academic education partnerships”, our mission at Yankton Rural Area Health Education Center (YRAHEC) is as relevant today as it was then. Our goals for the future remain: 1. Work with partners to create a sustainable healthcare workforce in our rural South Dakota service area. 2. Partner with other organizations and entities who share commonalities with our mission. 3. Contribute to the greater good of the work of healthcare professionals in local communities to support strong local economies. 4. Improve access to high quality healthcare services to medically underserved areas and populations by supporting the recruitment and retention of healthcare professionals to meet the ever-changing need of our South Dakota neighbors. To that end, our Board of Directors seeks input from community members throughout our service area; local and state government officials, K-12 educators, hospital and healthcare leaders. Most importantly, we ask concerned citizens who value the availability of healthcare resources in their home communities to join with us in our endeavors. We welcome your comments, thoughts and concerns; please contact any of us at [email protected]. Gale N. The 2011-12 Yankton Rural Area Health Education Center (YRAHEC) year was busy and extremely rewarding! YRAHEC covered numerous miles, and provided 384 contact hours for 7,323 South Dakota K-12 students, health professions students and practitioners! We worked with many schools introducing 4,362 elementary and secondary students to the exciting healthcare career opportunities available now and well into the future. These numbers indicate the volume of work done by YRAHEC. Numbers however, only tell part of the story. The rewarding part is realizing the impact our efforts have on the lives of those we serve. It was thrilling to learn one of our first REHPS students (Len) is now working in the same community (Wessington Springs) where he was placed for his Summer Experience, and that he is working for Horizon Healthcare – a community health clinic organization. That pretty much ticks all the AHEC boxes – connecting students to careers – professionals to communities – and communities to better health! Our goals for 2012-13 are equally strong. We will continue to seek out opportunities to introduce K-12 students to healthcare career choices. We will continue to place health professions students into rural communities whenever possible, and look to expand the locations and professions represented. We will continue to provide continuing education opportunities to practicing healthcare professionals on priority topics such as care for returning military personnel and their families and care for our elder and minority populations. Additionally, we will work to develop opportunities in rural communities for interprofessional education for post-secondary students, thus providing them experiences in the “real world” of rural healthcare. New collaborative partners for FY 2011-12 include the South Dakota National Guard, Horizon Healthcare, Philip Health Services, Wagner Memorial Community Hospital, Winner Regional Healthcare and nearly 100 K-12 educators, administrators, and extra-curricular advisors. September 1, 2012, our new fiscal year, saw our staff hit the ground running at Scrubs Camps, Women In Science, Career Fairs, conferences, etc. I look for 2012-13 to be just as exciting and just as rewarding. This one day event allows high school students the opportunity to have hands on experience with numerous healthcare careers and to hear from actual healthcare professionals how they got their start, the education involved, etc. On the heels of the Scrubs Camp is the Women in Science event which caters to 8th grade girls from the surrounding area. The purpose of this activity is to get more girls interested in math and the sciences. Throughout the year the YRAHEC is involved in exhibiting at conferences, fairs, school career fairs, health fairs, etc. A big part of the K-12 Program is speaking with students of all grade levels about the importance of healthcare careers, the availability of job opportunities and the incredible need for these professions in our state. One of the most significant things the K-12 Education Program does during the year is host the annual Certified Nursing Assistant Institute the first two weeks in June. This 10 day program meets the South Dakota Board of Nursing requirements for Certified Nursing Assistants. In addition to the 75 hour classroom and clinical course, the students have the opportunity to learn about the importance of human touch in caring for a patient. In 2013, this program will expand from accepting 10 students to 15. Program application materials are sent to school counselors the first week in April. Bart Hallberg REHPS Program K-12 Education Manager The Rural Experiences for Health Professions Students (REHPS) Program is in its third year. We have grown by leaps and bounds each year promoting three programs: The Disaster Training Day, Preceptor Training Day, and The Summer Experience Program. The Disaster Training Day is a one day event held at the Sanford School of Medicine in Vermillion educating and preparing students in disaster training. In addition to training students, nine individuals from the state were certified last October in National Disaster Life Support (NDLS) enabling them to train our students during the Disaster Training Day. The Yankton Rural AHEC was also designated as the NDLS Regional Training Center for Upper Midwest. The impact of the training day: • 10 disciplines participated with 315 students trained • 77 students registered for SERV-SD The Preceptor Training Day is also a one day event promoting rural precepting and interprofessional education to physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and pharmacists throughout the state. The Summer Experience Program places students in the medical, advanced practice nursing, physician assistant, and pharmacy programs into rural communities for four weeks during the summer.
